'Sledgehammer' Music Video Sackinima Project

Archive: 9 posts

Hey everyone!!!!

Well I mentioned on an Introduction thread that I had an LBP Project going on with a fellow LBP-er and I thought it would be relevant to lets you guys in on it!

About 3 years ago, my friend and I were wanting to make Machinima using Little Big Planet (as you do), but wasn't sure what to actually produce. Me being a massive fan of Music videos and the like. I said why don't we try to remake some famous/interesting music videos in LBP. So we drew up a list (the list is STILL on my wall 3 years on!!), and one that stood out for me was Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.

It seemed almost too perfect an idea, that we couldn't not do it, however, I didn't know what i was letting myself in for!

The aim of the video is to celebrate Little Big Planet ability to create pretty much anything, to produce animation with it and collaborate and work with teams and communites. Aardman Animation created that video 25 years ago, I was 2 when It was made, and remembered the video fondly. Although I was never quite aware of the lyrical subtext going on til i was about 15/16. :S

We actually started working this project a while back and got pretty far until we kind of got ourselves into a corner creatively and productively. it just wasn't working QUITE as I had hoped. It was good, but I had a few issues with it:

We were using LBP 1, that's not to say that it wasn't an amazing tool but it was rather limiting, and we were still on the project when LBP2 came out, and it seemed silly not to redo certain shot with better results/materials alongside the new tools, microchips etc;
Some of the references we put in the video were a little excluding, anyone from outside the UK may have been lost at what we were trying to do;
We were also working in a very small resolution, which with today's technology was rather wasteful considering we were well into the HD format by then, and I genuinely think it would have done the video a disservice to put all this detail in the video and to lose it all in the resolution.

If you wanna see the unfinished SD version here it is:

As you can see we've got some really complicated animation setups going on in that video. The cell duplication was a nightmare but I reckon it works really here.

A lot has changed. For starters we learned from our mistakes and have now storyboarded the whole video, and while we've still slightly deviated from even that, we still have a proper plan of how to get back to plan.

I'm also gonna place pictures and test videos in this thread soon to show you guys the kind of stuff we're working on. We've got a couple of ideas that we want to try out with the LBP community but we're not entirely sure if it's too unfeasible/impossible/undoable/difficult:

One of the ideas is to shoot HUNDREDS of sackpeople, individually, or in groups on a green screen set i have created, and then composite the lot in a massive crowd shot Towards the end of the video. (You see why I said it may be difficult)

Because this is such a huge video, I wanted it to incorporate shots and ideas from other iconic music videos such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Take On Me, Another Brick In the Wall, Thriller etc) and again. Suggestions are welcome, and may be considered even if parts of objects from the video are incorporated into the final project.

We also have a blog (http://learnedbiscuit.wordpress.com) for the project, but i'm so busy working on the video to update it, so while nothing happens there, there'a actually a ton going on in terms of production.

Well, that's about the size of it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a reply or you can Email us (learnedbiscuitproductions@gmail.com), putting "Sledgehammer Project" in the subject header. Thank you.

You can also follow us on Twitter @DjOuroboros (Me) @niirunoridozu (Neil, my LBP partner in crime) and @LearnedBiscuit (for updates on the project and now, this thread)

Well, that's enough waffle from me. Will post some pictures soon!!

The HD bump is definitely noticeable and it looks amazing. I think the SD version you posted is really, really good to begin with so LBP2 tools are going to make this all the more insane.2011-11-09 22:23:00

Thanks!! When i'd seen the stuff people had made in HD, we had to remount the project. We would have been fools not to. Plus all of that original video was done using LBP1, which had all sorts of limitations with cameras, and objects and systems. LBP2 with it's movers, microchips, logic systems, and the new Move Pack, has added a WHOLE new level of detail and control.

Plus, the Neon material is THE best material for green screen. (Greenest or Bluest at 30% make for good keying! XD)

I'll post more screenshots as we complete them. I want to see the thing finished, including the re-start we've been on this sucker for 2+ Years, although we've only been on this HD version for about 4 months on and off, but it's jumped up a gear because the lipsync is nearly done, it's just the background/foreground elements that need compositing/creating.

Thanks a ton for the comments guys!!

EPIC! I'm so excited for this project, one of my favourite songs and easily the most iconic music video of all time. Good luck with the rest and please do keep on updating us on your progress!2011-11-10 15:38:00
