Sackboy to be PS3 Mascot?

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169329 Souced from 1up.com 08/13/2008 Sony is preparing Little Big Planet's Sackboy to take on the hefty role of a PlayStation 3 mascot, according to a report from Advertising Age. We know that the company is counting on the downloadable game to sell hardware, but the planned marketing push goes much deeper than that. "We want Little Big Planet to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3," said SCEA marketing manager Mark Valledor. "This is a very big title for us." The Kratos and Nariko pre-order bonuses are only the tip of the marketing blitz to surround Sackboy, which will also include high-end yard signs to go up in Los Angeles, San Fransisco, and New York, complete with flashing lights. All told, Sony seems very keen on making Sackboy the face of the PlayStation 3 for the near future. While Nintendo has always had the venerable Mario and Microsoft hit it big with Master Chief as its de facto prince, Sony has generally shied away from promoting one character specifically as its headliner, instead choosing to highlight their variety of characters like Ratchet and Sly Cooper. A laser-like focus on Sackboy shows a lot of confidence in the anticipated title. We'll find out how well-placed that trust is very soon, but for now you can get a hint of where we're leaning from our E3 preview of Little Big Planet. | 2008-08-13 23:23:00 Author: docpac Posts: 601 |

Old news lol, has been floating around for days. Guess I should have posted it, if its not been mentioned already. Actualy, I'm sure it has been mentioned. In any case, Sackboy would make a 'face of playstation' | 2008-08-14 00:44:00 Author: Maltay Posts: 2073 |

Lots of older info posts today, but no matter, still good info. I think Sony will get the mascots in this generation. Sackboy will be one, Kratos the other when GOWIII hits. | 2008-08-14 04:13:00 Author: bbroman Posts: 1374 |
so much for giant enemy crab.... | 2008-08-14 04:22:00 Author: Reshin Posts: 1081 |
so much for giant enemy crab.... LMAO. New info to me. It seems to be a great mascot for the Playstation because LBP is going to be awesome. But also Sackboy can pretty much be anything, since you can customize him. That's what seems to make him such a good mascot. | 2008-08-14 05:18:00 Author: Vaati33 Posts: 65 |
I saw that this morning. It is great Sony is doing that because more people are starting to recognize the uhh.. goodness LittleBigPlanet has to offer. | 2008-08-14 06:13:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hell yeah!! Sackboy definitely deserves such title...could this mean that there will be more games to come staring Sackboy? :O That'd be cool: Sac-kart, Sackboy Party, Sackland - The Sim Game, just to mention a few ideas. | 2008-08-14 09:53:00 Author: xzentrico Posts: 27 |

I saw that this morning. It is great Sony is doing that because more people are starting to recognize the uhh.. goodness LittleBigPlanet has to offer. Poeple like me But what u mean with Sac-kart? Like Mario kart ? | 2008-08-14 18:04:00 Author: Emble Posts: 52 |
Let's hope sackboy doesn't turn into Sony's Mario, because that's a future of horrible spin-offs and dying franchises. | 2008-08-14 18:25:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
I disagree on having the Sackboy character whored out to racing games and so on. It's like Crash Bandicoot. That character/mascot was awesome for the first game. The second was good. The third and beyond got gimmicky. I don't want to see LBP sell out like that. | 2008-08-14 18:29:00 Author: 1000101 Posts: 192 |
No Sackboy minigame maybe. But No a Mascot or something | 2008-08-14 19:35:00 Author: Emble Posts: 52 |
Let's hope sackboy doesn't turn into Sony's Mario, because that's a future of horrible spin-offs and dying franchises. We can only hope... It really would suck if Sony rubbed sackboy in our faces from random angles (if you know what I mean) | 2008-08-14 22:05:00 Author: Koba0100 Posts: 10 |
I can't imagine there being another Little Big Planet. DLC is the future of the LBP legacy. | 2008-08-14 22:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
I can't imagine there being another Little Big Planet. DLC is the future of the LBP legacy. Agreed. That's the problem I have w/ Sackboy being the "mascot". Kratos really has a better chance, IMO. | 2008-08-15 03:26:00 Author: bbroman Posts: 1374 |
I can't imagine there being another Little Big Planet. DLC is the future of the LBP legacy. Of course you can't! The game hasn't even come out yet lol! And DLC is the future of the gaming industry. | 2008-08-15 04:04:00 Author: Code1337 Posts: 3476 |

Let's hope sackboy doesn't turn into Sony's Mario, because that's a future of horrible spin-offs and dying franchises. i was gunna say the same thing. keep it to little big planet! no kart racing or anything please :kz: | 2008-08-15 17:14:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
Sony has always been different from Nintendo and xbox not keeping one mascot. And LBP still keeps to the roots because sackboy is changeable, we already have seen this, with :kz: sackboy, to kratos and so on. So this fits what Sony is, they are not just one mascot but always will be the system with as many genre's as there is. I think this game is what the gaming world has needed for a long time, and I hope this does keep going adding new ways to make games for LBP. So yeah imagine a "mario Kart LBP" Where you get to create the level to the cart. Totally would be a great game. So I don't think you can go wrong with LBP in the future becasue the idea is to give the power to gamer to create new content and change the gaming world on it's heels. | 2008-08-15 17:29:00 Author: Darth_Spartan Posts: 813 |
I wish PaRappa The Rappa would've caught on as a mascot over here. He was a huge Playstation mascot in Japan. He was part of happy meals and such. I'd like to see a PaRappa beanie for Sackboy in the game. That would be cool. | 2008-08-15 18:16:00 Author: Snarglegarf Posts: 54 |

It wouldn't be bad, but parappa the rappa... was terrible :/ When he wins a years supply/lifetime supply of noodles Ugh, I dislike that game.. | 2008-08-15 18:19:00 Author: Maltay Posts: 2073 |
It wouldn't be bad, but parappa the rappa... was terrible :/ When he wins a years supply/lifetime supply of noodles Ugh, I dislike that game.. For what it was, I enjoyed it. Not so much for the PS2 sequel, because by that point it was a game that basically acclimated people to the controls of the Play Station, when the system initially came out. By the second iteration, people were pretty comfortable with the controller. It wasn't really about the narrative as much as it was about the catchy songs and getting the controller down. | 2008-08-15 18:22:00 Author: Snarglegarf Posts: 54 |
