Jack O' Lantern Junction

Archive: 15 posts

Well I have just published my entry for Platforming Perils and it is called Jack O' Lantern Junction. A level solely inspired by Halloween. I put most of my focus on platforming such that it was continuous throughout with very little down time. There are plenty of point bubble combos to get and a few hidden jack o' lanterns to find for points. I will also warn you that I used layer limitation a ton in this level, meaning that the back layers are inaccessible and are merely decoration for the backdrop of the level. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the level. Please let me know if you find any bugs or other issues that can be addressed before the final deadline and as always, any and all feedback would be great and appreciated.

Shookie, you never cease to amaze me with your platforming prowess. You've done an amazing job carrying the overall theme throughout the level and the visual aspects of this environment as well the game play elements are top notch as always. I loved the the tombstone of Bruce the Jam, that's hilarious! Great job shookie, keep 'em coming. Guys, quit reading this and queue this level, you won't be disappointed.2011-10-18 19:09:00

Thanks for the feedback biorogue! I can only hope that with each new level I can become better but it always takes the advice and feedback of good friends to make that happen. Without that, I couldn't grow as a creator. The level has done fairly well as it made it to #12 on cool levels for one day but has since slid down the line in the last few hours. Crazy that people would rather play giveaways instead of halloween themed levels.2011-10-19 15:32:00

You made yet another amazing level, Shookie99.

VISUALS:
The Halloween look of this level is well done with great material and decoration usage.

SOUND:
I didn't expect the Toy Story Western IntMusic to be used in a Halloween themed level. Great use of Party Ghouls Interactive music too.

GAMEPLAY:
This level has great platforming gameplay, and it has great use of The Pumpkinator. The evil tree boss battle is pretty good too.

OVERALL:
An great level that has a good Halloween theme. Good luck on the LBN contest. A yay and heart.

I can't understand that either. All these great levels out there and cool pages is inundated with "free giveaway" crap. I usually pay more attention to the Trending pages instead. Where I noticed The Perilous Pumpkin Patch is trending. Awesome!

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! I have actually updated the boss fight quite a bit. Won't spoil it for you if you wanna check it out again. Only thing left to do is add a health bar system to the boss fight. Thanks again!2011-10-23 03:36:00

Thanks for the feedback. Its nice to hear folks like it and enjoyed the level, though some would say it was vapid and unpolished, yet don't even bother to offer suggestions for improvement which makes their criticism futile/insalable.

So all is appreciated! Thanks again!

Played this last night and thought it was great! It's perfectly paced, and all your creations are brilliantly made. The halloween theme was carried out really well throughout the entire level.
My only real complaint (and this might only be because i'm stupid) is that there were a couple of points where it wasn't clear exactly what to do, such as near the beginning where you push the button, grab the skull and then have to throw it up at the button on the left; at first I couldn't see the latter button so I didn't know quite what to do.
Also much further on in the level I had no idea what to do in the section with the in/out moving platforms with pumpkins dropping down on them. I was there for ages and couldn't figure out what to do, but again, this might just be because i'm stupid!
I never actually managed to finish it due to time constraints, but based on what I saw this is a level worthy of a community spotlight. Hope this was helpful!

Take care

Thanks for the in depth feedback. I tried to make the camera angle just right so the player could see the other switch. If you play any of my other levels you will soon realize I tend to make people have to use other means to trigger switches other than grabbing them. And the second section you mention...I think you are referring to the point fest minigame halfway through the level. One could stand there and wait one minute for the door to open but that section is designed for people looking for some pretty nifty bubble combos and folks trying to get the top spot on the scoreboards (thank goodness they are fixed).

Anyway, glad you liked it and hope you visit it or my other levels again. Thanks!

Hmmm, maybe not the camera angle then, but maybe you could trigger a spotlight that highlights the button on the wall, or something. I've had similar issues in some of my levels where it's not been entirely clear what to do. I almost try and make things OVER-obvious, just so the player feels as if they're constantly progressing giving the level much better flow.

But then again who am I to tell YOU how to make a level?! lol

As for the other section, I wasn't talking about the point collecting part. I got past that fairly easily. I mean the bit where the flaming pumpkins are falling down onto these platforms that move randomly in and out, I had no idea where to go!

Again, this might be because i'm stupid...

Anyway, like I said, great level.

Okay...this shows how bad I am at character design so I fully take the blame. When you enter the area there is a big tree on the far right with an open mouth and evil eyes and some cutscene/dialogue. You have the grabinator equipped so catch the falling pumpkins and throw them in the mouth of the tree. Five will kill it and end the level. If you play the Perilous Pumpkin Patch, it is a minigame based on the boss fight concept.2011-10-28 15:35:00

That's no problem. Now that i'm armed with this dangerous knowledge I shall employ it next time I play your level! Which will be soon...

Well thanks again. Its quite easy to defeat the boss. I didn't want to deter from the platforming requirement and wanted the fight to be more fun than difficult, which is what platforming is all about at least to me anyway. Thanks!2011-10-30 13:57:00
