Which Shooter Should be a Movie?

Archive: 17 posts

This is an article originally on IGN (http://www.ign.com/) but I thought 'What the heck... I'll post it on LBPC!' So yea... Here it is!

Hollywood will never stop trying to mine video games for movie fodder. Sadly, this usually results in forgettable fare like Max Payne and Prince of Persia, or critically panned efforts such as Tekken and Super Mario Bros.

Many different genres of games have been tackled (and rumored), but not as many shooters as one would expect. But as games become more and more epic and technologically impressive, the potential for a quality film adaptation is rising all the time. Could there be a day when a game such as Call of Duty or Gears of War is as popular in theaters as it is on consoles?

http://media.movies.ign.com/articles/119/1199405/img_8666543.html

With Rage and GoW3's recent release on consoles, we want to know which shooter franchise stands the best chance of success in Hollywood. Is it a sci-fi game like Halo? A "realistic" military shooter like Call of Duty? What about system-selling franchises such as Gears, Killzone, or Resistance?

Cast your vote in the poll and take the discussion to the Comments below!

Uh-Oh... I think I just hid all the results from everybody... Soo.... Um... Yea... Any way to fix this? :o

Uncharted would make a great movie IMO.
Probably GoW following after it, then maybe Killzone. But CoD? Why not just make a military movie? Whats the difference? I mean: Making a movie on a game that is meant to simulate war? REALLY? Just make a war movie if you're going to do that.

Project Eden

The game itself wasn't so popular, but the theme and atmosphere of it was riveting.

A world in the future, a huge metropolis that towers over an abandoned world? A small police team is sent to find a few technicians, a small and simple job; but evidence leads them deeper, miles into the dark abandoned city underworld, where horrors are found.

Uncharted IS movie in creation right now (http://movies.ign.com/articles/104/1048827p1.html)... That's why it wasn't an option... And this was an exact copy of the IGN article... I literally copy and pasted the entire thing... xD Here's (http://movies.ign.com/articles/119/1199405p1.html) the link to the one on IGN. Compare the differences... And who said you could give your own choices anyways? It's a poll. You get to choose what is up there... You can't go to a psychologist and say 'No. I want that questionare right there. Not this one.'2011-10-12 05:01:00

Call of Duty, because the campaign is basically a mash-up of war movie cliches... ...the producers don't even have to think. PERFECT!2011-10-12 12:00:00

**** it. Why do people keep making video game movies? Video games don't need movies made of them.2011-10-12 16:37:00

Neither do books. Does that mean we should stop making films based on books?

Halo. A feature length episode of Red vs Blue with better aesthetics/epicness would be brilliant. And if you've never seen it, you need to head over to YouTube right this minute and watch. 2011-10-12 23:13:00

Books have something to gain from being a film. Videogames and film are basically the same medium. So there is nothing to gain, only interactivity to lose.

I'd like to see a Resistance movie. It could be good.

They tried to make Halo, but they ran out of funding and it turned into District 9.

None of the above--Bioshock please. Although, I'm sure they wouldn't do it justice and it would probably go straight to the Starz channel.2011-10-13 13:48:00

*slams fist into table* NO!

No game ever should be made into a movie. Movies are movies, games are games, oranges and apples. Game franchises are great when they are played. Their story and the premise of those franchises are made so that they're meant to be played. They're two separate mediums, and not just different in the way books and movies are. Games are interactive, that's what sets them apart from all other entertainment mediums.

Let's say you want to convert a game into a movie. It wouldn't do just remaking the cutscenes in live action and stitching them together, no. Most of the story of a proper game (that isn't an MGS) folds out when you're playing. And how are you to cram a dozen of hours of gameplay into a two hour movie? Changes must be made. Changes that will turn an adaptation into something even less worthy of being compared to the game. That's why ALL the movies based on videogames end up abominations like Prince of Persia and Max Payne. It's not a question of choosing the right game, it's about realizing how game and movie franchises don't mix.

About Uncharted, do you know that an Uncharted movie is in development? And do you know what the first screenwriter they hired had in mind? They planned to make Nathan Drake a member of a family of treasure hunters closely related to the US government, dealing with ancient conspiracies. They wanted to make a National Treasure clone and slap the word "Uncharted" in the title. They are restarting from scratch now with a new screenwriter, but I'm telling you, the movie will suck. If it proves to be half as good as the game, any one of you who read this can come over to my house and castrate me with a rusty butterknife.

Games have become the ultimate form of entertainment. The most immersive, the most rich, and the most satisfying, and the only one in which our action makes a difference. Therefore game franchises shouldn't be allowed to become some egocentric hollywood director's plaything. Every single game in this poll is so good because it's a game. Make it a movie, and it sucks.

Make Uncharted a movie, and you aren't Nathan Drake anymore jumping through the exploding scenery. Some cheesy actor is. Make a Resistance movie, and you're not the resistance anymore. Make a Mass Effect movie and you're stuck with the predictable Paragon Shepard. Make a Deus Ex movie and you no longer choose how the character would have executed his mission. Make a Bioshock movie, and you're not the man anymore. You are the slave. A man chooses, a slave obeys. A gamer chooses, a movie watcher obeys.
