Tutorial or Blog?
Archive: 7 posts
Ok, I have started working on a tutorial. It's on something that is pretty involved, so it's getting fairly long. I have the first draft of text started up and it is two and a half printed pages using 11 pt font. I still have yet to add pictures, and probably have at least another page of text to add to it. There's just so much to cover. I haven't even checked the limits of the threads, so I may not even be able to do it in one post. If I can though, would it be better to do it as a series of blog posts, series of tutorials, or just one big tutorial? I'm leaning towards one big tutorial with links to blog posts for the "more info" explanations, but not sure. Your thoughts? PS-If anyone wants to help make an accompanying level for this, please send me a message here or reply below. A basic understanding of binary would be a bonus. I'm at a loss with tutorial levels. | 2011-10-12 02:31:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
include all of it in your blog and reference it in the shorter version in the tutorial section, that way i can link directly to the blog in my tutorial thread out of curiosity, what's it about? | 2011-10-12 05:33:00 Author: GribbleGrunger Posts: 3910 |
It's a binary based scoreboard system I came up with a few months back. It's a pretty powerful scoreboard. It's really pretty easy to set up once you have the tools for it, but people hear the word "binary" and run for the hills. I want to do the tutorial in a way that is easy enough for people to jump in and understand, but complete enough to allow people to gain at least a basic knowledge of the concepts behind it if that's what they want. The latter part is what would make it so long. | 2011-10-12 06:55:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
You get more people pressing the thanks button if you put it in the tutorials section | 2011-10-12 08:23:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I second what rtm said, but mostly because Blogs are almost invisible in a forum structure. You should advertise it in your sig and it's even hard that people will bother to click it, because maybe they don't need help at the moment. BUT they may check the thread if they stuble on it while browsing the tutorial section, since if people visits the section is because they need help | 2011-10-12 12:11:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
I haven't even checked the limits of the threads, so I may not even be able to do it in one post. TBH, I'd be very surprised if you managed to overflow the 16MB limit, which is enough to fit the entirety of the King James Bible about four times. If I can though, would it be better to do it as a series of blog posts, series of tutorials, or just one big tutorial? Each has its pros and cons. For a single tutorial, I'd go with the "stick it all in one post" option, so your readers don't have to keep clicking around to read all the parts. If you intend to do multiple tutorials covering different subjects, then the blog option gives you a neat way to have an index of all your tutorials on a single page. Either way, you can increase visibility by linking from your sig. I'm leaning towards one big tutorial with links to blog posts for the "more info" explanations, but not sure. For your "more info" sections, those could just go in spoiler tags much like rtm's "geeknotes" sections, thus avoiding the annoyance of having to wait for additional pages to load. If anyone wants to help make an accompanying level for this, please send me a message here or reply below. A basic understanding of binary would be a bonus. I'm at a loss with tutorial levels. Perhaps. I'll check out this scoreboard thing of yours next time I see you on LBP. | 2011-10-16 01:19:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Thanks guys. Yeah 16mb should be plenty. Even I'm not that verbose lol. I was thinking it may be somewhere in the neighborhood of a few thousand characters/words. Now I want to make a 16mb post just because I can. The reason I am considering the blog/tut combo is that when you start hitting on things like binary, people tend to get all glassy eyed and lost. It needs to be explained, but would take up enough space that it almost warrants its own tutorial. That's where I am leaning towards "more info" on the blog. The tutorial itself could easily fit in one post if I just post the step by step of it all, but there's so much more to understanding it. I probably won't be on LBP2 tonight, but feel free to pop in and have a look next time I am. I have it set up and working in a level that I just never quite finished. | 2011-10-17 00:47:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
