Paper Plane Racing

Archive: 5 posts

If anyone's ever played the paper planes game in Wario Ware for the Gamecube, you'll know what to expect here - my friends and I could play that little game for hours on end, so simple, yet so much fun. And this is the reason I decided to make it on LBP, but packed with more features!

At its core, a paper plane falls down a track under gravity which you can steer left or right in order to guide it around a track. If you crash into anything you'll be penalised and in this game, every second really does make a difference. Once you pass the finish line, points are awarded and a running tally is kept until one player reaches the predetermined winning score.

There are nine tracks in total with increasing difficulty as follows:

Novice: Orange, Blue and Pink.
Intermediate: Green, Purple and Black.
Expert: White, Red and Yellow.

Novice is your basic tracks built up of rectangular obstacles, intermediate more complex consisting of varied shapes, and expert featuring some sort of special gameplay element.

So have fun! Obviously best played with 4 people (like any 4P game =P) and please report and bugs are glitches that occur, there shouldn’t be anything that causes the game to break, but given the amount of varying options I can’t fully play test every scenario. Here’s a list of features followed by some screen shots.

- Choose between ‘first to...’ 10, 20 or 30 points as the winner.
- Choose one of 4 colours to race in: Red, Blue, Yellow and Green.
- Use either the D-pad or left stick to steer left and right.
- At any time during gameplay your steering can be inverted by pressing the square button (a little sound effect plays to show this).
- Press R2 to honk your horn!
- 3 of the tracks have hidden short cuts – so keep your eyes peeled!

Just played it. Gameplay I must admit was pretty fun! At first I thought the control were different than how they actually were so i found it very difficult, but once I got the controls I was cruisin through those levels! lol. If I was to give one thing I didn't like it would be the lack of design. Now I know that you did have artwork in the levels, but I still felt it to be a bit empty feeling. So if you have any ideas to further spruce of the scenery you'll be fine with me . Liked

and here is my level http://lbp.me/v/6z-mt3

I thought the menus looked very good. but then the levels themselves looked plain. the menus of the level had nice borders and layers but, the levels were just plain material. The steering seemed a bit choppy too. the idea is good but making the levels more eye appealing would really help.

The level's based on a mini game from WarioWare for the Gamecube (strangely I can't find a video of it on Youtube!) but the mechanics are pretty much identical to that - in terms of the incremental movement rather than it being fluid.

I went through multiple design phases and completely overhauled the design a few times but ultimately finished with the look I have at the minute because of its simplicity, it was a lot more busy at one point but I felt it detracted from the core experience and potentially confused the player (in terms of what were obstacles and what weren't). I wanted it to be a no frills type level solely based around the multiplayer experience (consider the Mm pick Mini golf, it's the same type of level). Not only that, removing a lot of the clutter I was able to add more tracks (9 instead of 7). Did you get to play the expert tracks? I'm particularly happy with those, if you didn't first time around if you get the chance do check it out if you're ever online with others. Thanks for playing, I've queued your level.

Please see above for the explanation of the controls, it is intentionally supposed to be like that. And again for the simplicity of it. Not only that but my thermo is about to pop if I add anything more (opening a controlinator circuit board causes the level to overheat ).

Thanks for playing, and if you ever get a chance please do play with others so you get to play the later tracks. In fact I might reorganise the order the tracks play as I don't think many who have played did get to play tracks 7 through 9, which are the most fun! And most difficult.

I've queued your level, thanks for playing.
