Adventures in Digital Art! [Updated 4/5/12]
Archive: 101 posts
Hello LBPC, for a while now I have been pursuing my passion of some day becoming a 3D modeler for the games industry. I feel like now would be a good time to start posting some of my works and progress as I continue to learn in both the fields of 3D modeling and digital painting. Some programs: For 3D, I have been using a lovely program called Blender. It is completely free and has become second nature to me. http://www.blender.org/ I have gotten 99% of all my tutorials and education from an amazing site called Blender Cookie. http://cgcookie.com/blender/ For painting, I use GIMP! It is also completely free. This I have only picked up a few days ago, so expect a lot of progress. http://www.gimp.org/ For my tutorials and education in painting I go to Concept Cookie, from the same lovely people as Blender Cookie (CG Cookie would be their main HUB) http://cgcookie.com/concept/ I will be posting all my works on this thread, don't be afraid to comment and critique. Feel free to share your own stuff too! I will post some stuff I have done in the past to get the thread started, and continue to add to them frequently. 3D stuff! http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Blender%20Pics/dragon-1.png http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Blender%20Pics/Feesh.png A collaboration between me and chump, original sketch and concept by chuck. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Blender%20Pics/Head.png http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Blender%20Pics/LonePlanet.png All done within Blender's compositor, no GIMP or Ps. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Potion.png Using Cycles Render to achieve a great glass effect http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/scorpion.png Using Cycles Render to give my sword a great look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dzv8IAWtaV8 My first animation. I really like that sword! I do agree with you though hat the spder is a little floaty. | 2011-10-09 00:17:00 Author: jalr2d2 Posts: 256 |
Woah...i've used most of those programs...and you're pretty good =) | 2011-10-09 00:46:00 Author: AdenRalumdan Posts: 296 |
Great work i havent tried blender yet but i have been meaning to get into digital art myself. | 2011-10-09 01:14:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |
Thanks If it seems like something you would be interested in, I would encourage you to start right away. It can be a bit daunting and you won't always be happy with your work, the best tip I can give is to always have confidence in yourself and your abilities, your work will reflect it! | 2011-10-09 02:12:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Thank you very much for recommending these programs, I also want to go in that same sort of industry myself, although I've had all this trouble with my tablet and all o_o but yeha, need to try out Multimedia Fusion 2 demo, but will also try Blender aswell | 2011-10-09 02:21:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |

It sure would make painting easier! I got so frustrated with making eye lashes that I just omitted them for sanity's sake | 2011-10-09 02:26:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Blender is not a user-friendly program, just to warn those who haven't used it. I personally like Maya a lot more, but it's also a LOT more expensive. | 2011-10-09 03:06:00 Author: AdenRalumdan Posts: 296 |
I haven't tried Maya before, one of my friends uses it. Blender has a bit of a curve but you can really start cruisin' once you've gotten over the bump. I'm working on a bit of art in GIMP right now, just kind of hopped in with a vague idea of what I want. Probably not the best idea considering I'm so new to it . Should be finished in a matter of minutes. EDIT: Oh and expensive indeed, $3,495 :O EDIT EDIT: New stuff! http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/pauldron.png I really should have made an environment or at least a few strokes of grey but I had already overlayed the colors T-T oh well. I went in wanting to make some sort of metal shoulder guard, then I sort of got inspired by the Protoss from SC2, funny considering I don't even play it. | 2011-10-09 03:44:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Nice work! These are all pretty darn good! I'm a 3D artist myself; though I don't have anything good enough that I'd like to share, perhaps in the future that will change. I used to use Blender, but it's interface was so cluttered and confusing to me... I now use Autodesk 3D Studio Max. It's insanely powerful! | 2011-10-09 03:51:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
Oh yes, it is scary at first, SO many buttons :O This is why it's best to get acquainted with the key strokes. Then you can close and minimize all those menus and work at an incredible rate. | 2011-10-09 03:59:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

I don't know if I could ever get used to Blender now... I think I'll just stick to 3DS Max or Maya. Have you ever thought about texturing those nice models of yours? Slap a bump map and a normal map on those puppies and they could look even better! | 2011-10-09 04:15:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |

Slap a bump map and a normal map on those puppies and they could look even better! Yea, I had but they are kinda old now. Now I have some good know-how on doing that and I would like to apply it to some better models. | 2011-10-09 04:20:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

Remember folks, if you have anything of your own don't be shy, I would love to see what you have too Weeeelllll.... ok. I didn't want to show this because it's so early in development that it looks almost nothing like it's going to when it's done, but you've convinced me. http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h412/anonymau5_/LiliRenderTest.jpg It's going to be the female character in my signature. Her name is Lili. I should probably finish the model before I start texturing, but I just couldn't help it... I love normal maps too much!! | 2011-10-09 06:30:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
Well for what it is so far, it looks great! I haven't really tried making anything with cloth before, maybe I should work that in to my next project. | 2011-10-09 06:45:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Ive started a new project tonight! I am starting by making the silhouette, which I've just about finished. So here it is just to show you the step by step progress. The final version will be in the OP when I get to it. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Armor-1.png | 2011-10-10 04:05:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
I must say, those 3D models are pretty good, keep practicing and I'm positive you'll be in the industry in no time. To if I may, my I recommend going indie if you find the chance? The videogame industry and any kind of 3D animating jobs are pretty saturated right now, so even professional 3D modelers (or whatever they're called.) are struggling to find a job nowdays, however if you find yourself a nice group of people and stat working on independent groups together, you'll most likely have a job guaranteed there if it takes off, and its easier to get hired if a company sees you've created finished products before, not to mention indie studios get bought pretty often now. Well at least that's what I've seen it been as of late, what ever you do is ultimately your call, just make sure to do it wholeheartedly and I'm positive whatever you do will pay off one way or another. | 2011-10-10 05:20:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
Yup, I've done my homework on it too. This isn't just a spontaneous decision for me, this is something I have been willing to put hours in to each day for a long time. I am aware that being any kind of artist means a bit of instability. It is even suggested that you free lance on the side of a job. I am completely accepting of this though, in fact I sort of favor it. With the amount of objects and detail I have been seeing in these new titles, I am optimistic that the situation may de-saturate in time...or perhaps that's consequence of the saturation...hmm. ANYWAY, the new piece is coming along amazingly! I impress even myself with it. I could be done with the next step by tomorrow. Excitement! | 2011-10-10 06:23:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Yay, 'bout time we had some more 3D art arounds here. They look really good too, I especially like the, uhh fish? Or whatever ever it is, are you going to put any textures on it? I think it'd come up really well. I see you use Blender, I've always wanted to give it a go myself but just never really got around to it, this thread's inspired me to finally try it out. Anyway, can't wait to see the new piece | 2011-10-10 06:59:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |

PS stands for Photoshop....AKA my best friend. Aa, how did that not pop into my brain? Thank you for telling me, and I saw what you've done so far for 3d model of girl in signature, very nice, even if it isn't done yet, the shapes and textures match up nicely but they also work very well together. | 2011-10-10 23:48:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |

It IS a zoid =D I had no idea that they were built a specific way at the time...so that one is a mix between a blade liger, liger zero, and something with a chain gun I want one NOW Specifically the Lightning Saix....that one has to be my favorite. I'm currently modelling Liger Zero...so hopefully that'll come out better. | 2011-10-11 03:09:00 Author: AdenRalumdan Posts: 296 |
Completely off topic but OMG, I've been trying to remember what that show was called for YEARS but nobody I asked knew. Zoids! What an odd name, no wonder I couldn't remember it. So thanks, another mystery solved | 2011-10-11 03:20:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |

I remember building some saber toothed Zoid that walked. My favorite was still my little raptor Zoid made up of those interchangeable parts I'm working on a jack-o-lantern piece now. Should also be seeing some 3D candy soon too. | 2011-10-12 01:14:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

If so...there are a ton of raptor zoids too XD | 2011-10-12 03:15:00 Author: AdenRalumdan Posts: 296 |
Nonono there was this whole series of these toys, they are made up of parts with ball and sockets on them so that they can be posed and taken apart and made in to new zoids. Hey man! You're really doing some good stuff here! Personally I use Maya2011(Student Version) and am quite envious of how fast you picked up Blender! It's a great program to know how to use since it's FREE!! I can not do any commercial work with Maya until I buy it. Anyways keep up the great work! And just for the sake of it, here's something I'm working on: http://i54.tinypic.com/2cghe2b.jpg | 2011-10-12 14:03:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |

I'm doing my second model in Blender, so far so good, but unwrapping it is so tedious. Do you guys use a different method for texturing it? | 2011-10-13 03:22:00 Author: Silver39 Posts: 1703 |
I'm doing my second model in Blender, so far so good, but unwrapping it is so tedious. Do you guys use a different method for texturing it? I used 3DS Max's powerful UVW Wrap tool, followed by the Unwrap UVW modifier. I can then use the resulting unwrap to pack all of the model's UVs into a template. I then draw my textures on this template and apply them to the model. | 2011-10-13 03:29:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |

I then draw my textures on this template and apply them to the model. I see. Also, looking back, I probably should have just used the extrude feature a bit more, instead of just using a bunch of different entities. Cuz now I got a bunch of unorganizes UVs and it is a pain. Good mental note for the next one I guess. | 2011-10-13 03:41:00 Author: Silver39 Posts: 1703 |

Just out of curiosity, what industry are you interested in? Animation? Game development? | 2011-10-13 05:12:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
Well...modeling for games would be my dream. As of late I have been a bit stuck between environmental or character. I think I would like characters a lot more just because of the type of detail, and work, and imagination that goes in to the making of characters. It's a bit daunting though, learning anatomy and topology. I think I should pull myself to make a character next, I actually have yet to model a sentient being. Maybe it would be good for me. | 2011-10-13 05:27:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
It'd be cool to work on a small game or something with you sometime if you're up for it | 2011-10-13 05:48:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
That would be great. As fate would have it, pre-orders are ending soon on one of my favorite tutorialists DVD on creating a low-poly game character and bringing it in it Unity-3D. Can't wait till it comes out. | 2011-10-13 17:26:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
That would be a good tut to get :3 I already know how to export from maya to Unity and how to use the unity script. Definitely will be fun to work on a game as a collaboration! | 2011-10-13 20:15:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |

I didn't touch them actually, I used a particle system to emit them and achieve a more random order. Idk if there is a value I can change to get random rotations. That would have helped though. Product of a bit of late night painting: http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Dagger.png hmmm :/ My materials suck, it was very uninspired anyway. Moving along! Looks like your whole game is missing specular highlights. Maybe it's your graphics settings? Just to clarify xero, its Team Fortress 2 (I was using the itemtest map) I just made a skin for the Powerjack for it. And also, my graphics settings is pretty low. (Using DirectX 8) What are you using to make that Val? I didn't make the game. Only the model. | 2011-10-26 23:05:00 Author: Silver39 Posts: 1703 |

(Using DirectX 8) Precisely--Team Fortress 2 has a lot of specular values. The pyro typically has a normal map resulting in a lot of shine on his suit. I've noticed in your screenshot that said detail is missing. If the shine from the pyro suit is missing (because of low graphics settings), then the shine from your axe could be missing for the same reason. | 2011-10-26 23:15:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |

Epic!! Who made them? :3 | 2011-10-27 01:35:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
Jonathan Williamson and Wes Burke of Blender Cookie. With some help from industry professionals! Also, some new stuff! I just finished the first part of a tutorial on painting an environment. Here are my results http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Enviro.png It is/ is going to be a lovely dragon, basking on a lovely cliff, above a lovely lake, in the middle of a lovely forest, with a lovely sunrise peaking over the lovely mountains. | 2011-10-27 03:26:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

I took just a few minutes to make this up. I started by just making a big black blob with some canyon rock mound aspects to it. I did this so that I could then practice finding the shapes within that black blob to create a variety of rocks that form it. I then took the opportunity to practice overlaying colors It was actually pretty fun to just hop in do something quick. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Mountain.jpg | 2011-11-05 02:39:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

did my front and side for the character I am going to be using while following that character modeling tutorial I talked about It is my own concept of something that would be in the indie game Overgrowth. If you haven't heard of it I recommend checking it out. They do tons of blogs and videos detailing their progression on this game. The game will not only be just a game but will also include the engine so that you can make your own levels and even import and rig your own models.Pre-ordering gets you the alpha version of the engine and some alpha levels. I haven't pre-ordered it myself but it sounds great http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/WhiteFox-1.jpg | 2011-11-06 02:43:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Yay for overgrowth! Recently discovered it myself :3 Btw, if you are planning on skinning that character I recommend you model the arms in a T-pose withe the palms of the hands facing down and fingers uncurled Of course if the tutorial you're following recommends you do it the way you are njow, then Id stay with that! Also here is my character sheet for my viking: (I did the hands the wrong way up here, but in the model I modelled them with palms down) http://i.imgur.com/HYt8X.png | 2011-11-06 03:36:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
He has them the way I made them but he didn't actually say to have them so. I will probably just model them straight anyway. I actually tried this tutorial with a different character but was having too much trouble do to the differences between his model and mine. So in this one I made sure to include clothing and accessories similar to his. I think I might start modeling it tonight, but I sort of feel like painting up a quick environment for my arctic fox. EDIT: Here it is. I will finish it when the final part of the tutorial is released. Just need to put detail in the city/fox and put in some color I really enjoyed making this one and am in love with the results so far. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/SnowCity.jpg | 2011-11-08 03:06:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Looks great so far Littlebigdude! Random low-poly lamp asset I made for a game I'm working on. http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h412/anonymau5_/LampRender.jpg | 2011-11-08 17:07:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
Sorry for the lack of updates! I have been hard at work on my model I actually finished sculpting it a few days ago and am now working on the re-topology Here is a quick screen shot of the model! Just finished this environment Not entirely happy with the city but I got tired of fooling around with it. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/SnowCity-2.jpg EDIT: Been a very busy last few weeks but I managed to work on some stuff Here is the final model. It is low poly and game friendly. I even got around to setting up the animation rig which can be seen in the first picture and put to use in the second picture. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/WhiteFoxFinal.jpg http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/WhiteFoxPose.jpg You may notice the floating bit of leather XD I have to get in there and clean up the weight paint. | 2011-12-08 04:05:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

You might need to change the animation for that kick...if I'm right on that the wolf is supposed to be kicking something. That's awesome. I especially like the paint ones | 2011-12-10 19:19:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
saw the first photo and i was like http://lolpics.se/pics/4582.jpg But Aden is right the kick does look a bit floaty, straighten the leg and bring it closer to the body , also when someone kicks they normally lean backwards only slighty , your character looks like he is about to fall over XD. After this.....MAKE IT INTO A GAME! please | 2011-12-15 18:22:00 Author: butter-kicker Posts: 1061 |
I did this some days ago as a concept for a possible model. I'm not entirely happy with it, mostly because of the challenges that might arise with such a character. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab236/littlebigbucket/Golem.jpg It was fun to do anyway. | 2011-12-18 05:03:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

Right I picked up blender and I have no idea what to do help? | 2012-01-29 09:49:00 Author: butter-kicker Posts: 1061 |
Right I picked up blender and I have no idea what to do help? I recommend the wiki (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Introduction). And once you feel you've read enough you can start with this (fairly) simple tutorial (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Your_First_Animation/1.A_static_Gingerbread_Man). | 2012-01-29 18:34:00 Author: warlord_evil Posts: 4193 |
I keep forgetting to pay this thread it's due attention. So here is some recent work! http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/042/f/c/alchemy_test_before_and_after_by_fullsynch-d4pfko8.jpg Some fun with Alchemy http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/021/c/7/head_shot_by_fullsynch-d4n7psn.jpg and uh yea...that one kinda just happened. Okay time for some WIP models! The first is the one I concepted earlier on the thread (page 6). I kind of finished working on it a good while ago, I made a good few mistakes which were causing calamity. So I moved on and did a quick model sheet for a new character and did a good bit of on fly changes which has some how resulted in a much better quality model. http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/048/a/1/demonic_legionnaire_render_front_by_fullsynch-d4q36go.png http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/048/3/0/demonic_legionnaire_render_back_by_fullsynch-d4q36lf.png Here is the new, let's call it "Paladin", model. This is the high-poly version for now, I want try detailing it more in the textures so I'm leaving it fairly plain. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/071/e/4/paladin_wip_by_fullsynch-d4skrh7.png | 2012-03-14 17:51:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
I love the paladin one. Do you plan to apply a reactor cloth to the pieces hanging off of the spaulders at the front? | 2012-03-15 04:44:00 Author: xero Posts: 2419 |
._. Reactor cloth!? That sounds a lot cooler than what it probably is. Oh! Since the rendering of that model I have added a cape and today I finished the terrible task of unwrapping the UVs. | 2012-03-15 05:13:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/084/0/7/paladin_wip_2_by_fullsynch-d4tyhmo.png A WIP render to get a taste of the textures. I was originally going to go with purple and gold, but changed my mind. Looking at it now, I think I might have to go back to gold. | 2012-03-25 07:53:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/091/f/2/paladin_wip_4_by_fullsynch-d4ungcv.png Finally finished texturing Now to rig it. I am fairly new to rigging, so it may take a bit. Afterward I'll make a proper presentation with UV's and diffuse maps. | 2012-03-31 23:17:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
So what if your Warrior-priest is awesome, I can make awesome things to *starts crying at the multiccolured ball I made with a hint of shine on it* | 2012-04-03 15:55:00 Author: butter-kicker Posts: 1061 |
WOOOOOOOOO Finally finished with my character! This is a milestone my friends. I'm just going to put the link to the deviation here so that I don't have to copy over the wall of text. In that link you will find the full presentation, description, and my very first piece of lore. :3 mmmyes. http://fullsynch.deviantart.com/#/d4v9h9p | 2012-04-06 05:54:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
