Horror Games

Archive: 37 posts

It's October, gentlemen (and ladies), so you know what that means? It's time for some serious horror games!

I want to make a list here of games that are recommended for any gamer out there who wants a good scare during this upcoming Halloween. I'm personally going to pull an all-nighter on that day to play some horror games with some of my friends. Anywho, the list below is compiled of games recommended by you guys. The list is alphabetically in order and is categorized by the amount of terror each one gives us. The key is as follows:

Horror Levels

EXTREME - NOT FOR THE WEAK HEARTED. Your heart will be pounding throughout the whole game.
High - Contains multiple scare moments, yet they're bearable.
Mild - Several parts will make you flinch, but other than that it's as scary as watching paint dry.

Now that we got that out of the way, I'll throw in a few of my own suggestions.

------

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/921/amnesiae.jpg

Level: EXTREME

Amnesia is a puzzle-based game that puts a unique twist to playing a horror game: you don't any weapons to protect yourself with. Throughout the whole game you must avoid monsters and abominations while figuring out how you got in the haunted house you're in the first place. The feeling of being hopeless and lost is one of the main key components to this game, along with its psychological effect on your sense of feeling safe at anytime in the game. I definitely think you have to try this if you love horror movies and horror games. ~ CyberSora

Dead Space 2

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/2179/deadspace2logof.jpg

Level: High

Even though the overused the cliche "jump" tactic throughout the game, Dead Space 2 still keeps the creepy atmosphere alive. If you're interested in playing this, I suggest you grab a bag of chips and some soda: this game is kind of lengthy. Have fun beating the Hunters. ~ CyberSora

Promote this to extreme if playing on the Hard Core difficulty. Being limited to 3 saves for the entire game adds an entirely different type of horror. ~ Rabid-Coot

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9551/silenthillshatteredmemo.jpg

Level: High

Shattered Memories falls under the same type of game play as Amnesia: Dark Descent: no weapons, running, and puzzles. But the difference is how it plays out. The game finds out what scares you, and what makes you feel guilty, sad, etc. and it uses it against you. ~ poorjack

------

Oh, and LBP 1, 2, and PSP are acceptable. Contribute.

Lawl, I think that's considered rage, not horror. I will add that to the OP, though.

'Dark Meadow' for the Ipad.

Now, it may not be entirely scary, but it's got a great mood going and can give you the feeling of being completely alone wondering these hospital hallways. The gameplay is a lot like Infinity Blade, where you move to set points, collect hidden items, buy new weapons and items, and when the extremely ugly monsters come, use your crossbow and sword to take them out. Oh, and it runs on the unreal engine so it's absolutely gorgeous for an iOS game.

It's the pulse pounding horror of if I die now I've got to replay several hours of the game followed by the rage of a stupid death.

Amnesia. x100. Seriously, there is no other game which will make you feel so helpless. I have never played a game like it, and will be a while till I do again no doubt. I am proud to of manages to complete it, and the dlc haha!

I am a huge horror fan, but when it comes to games there aren't many genuine horror games. Dead Space is relatively boring I find, it uses cheap scares (jumping out at you) and then is otherwise just another action game. Silent Hill games are alright (3 I found very good and scary, though I was fairly young) but they've tended to get a bit average as they've gone on. Resident Evil is no longer a horror game really.
I just feel horror games don't work well when you're given powerful weapons. The fear goes away, as you can just blast away any incoming enemies. This is why Amnesia nails this so well. You cannot kill anyone, just run, hide and cower in the corner. And don't even get me started on the water scene... my lord.

Penumbra: Overture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPwQxF99eMk&feature=player_embedded), I haven't played the game but I watched Pewdiepie's let's play about it. Looks scary as ****. Not really sure how to describe it. Well, the gameplay is very much like Amnesia except that you can kill some creatures.

BioShock could be counted as Mild. While it is more of a genetically enhanced shooter, it has its scary moments. Specially when you are playing on harder difficulties. But, compared to the other games you are picking, BioShock would be more of a "chill-out game".

BioShock 2 isn't as scary as the first one, because you're a freaking Big Daddy.

You played Amnesia too? Awesome!

By the way, your taste in horror games are exactly like mine, so props for good taste. While Amnesia only gave me jump scares and moments where I'd be very worried about opening a door, the water parts were more about rage really. Seeing the stupid thing mess up my boxes made me frustrated and I forgot about being scared at all.

My scariest moment is at a tie. The first one was at the morgue. I thought it was gross, but when the door broke down I hauled a**. The second one was rather emberaasing and appropriate; I heard a grunt to I knew a monster was near. I closed the door and turn off the light, but when I turned around I saw the thing right in front of and it lunged out at me. I screamed like a ****** when it happened because I finished drinking a can of Monster, it was 2 AM in the morning, and I had headphones on (I didn't think it was going to scare me that much). ;_;

High? HIGH?! Are you serious?! I played it and that game scared the sh*t out of me! It wasn't as bad as Amnesia, which made me have a problem opening doors at night for like 2 days, but the game still ranks at EXTREME because it of its content. The same people who made Amnesia made Penumbra.

Deadly Premonition ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadly_Premonition)

One seriously messed up game... the closest I've come to playing a waking nightmare.

The Shalebridge Cradle level of Thief: Deadly Shadows. I'd probably rate it as high/extreme. It's only one level in the game but it's definitely the best horror gaming experience I've had. The sound design and atmosphere are outstanding.2011-10-09 17:27:00

Just finished seeing some videos on it: it looks like a comedy/horror film. While I personally didn't find it scary at all, judging by the scenes I watched, this game is really twisted.

F.E.A.R. 2 was mediocre at best, Dead Space 1 was only good for giving me jump scares, and Doom 3 isn't even worth considering a horror game but instead more of a hectic version of Gears of War. I don't know, it's from my past experience. When you play Amnesia you can handle anything; played Dead Space 2: hardly flinched at all.

Dear Esther

Not scary strictly speaking, but it builds up a creepy atmosphere nicely. It progressively becomes more disturbing as you play through so if you're into that stuff, check it out. I'm not sure if the updated mod is out yet.

Listen to this, kids. If you want to forever see everything that ever scared you in movies, games, or television, play Amnesia. You will be scarred so much that nothing can scare you in comparison to how Amnesia can.

For anyone who still has a PS2, I highly recommend...

Haunting Ground (titled Demento in Japan)
Silent Hill 2 & 3
Fatal Frame series (titled Project Zero in Europe & Australia)
Rule of Rose (banned in some countries)
Siren (titled Forbidden Siren in Europe and Australia)
The Thing (based on the John Carpenter movie of the same name)

Silent Hill 3

A traditional survival horror title with a deep story and some very very disturbing themes. Visuals are probably the peak of what the PS2 can do, and are incredibly disturbing nightmare fuel. Probably the very best Silent Hill game ever made.

It's not scary in a ........ BOO! - Ha ha I scared you! way.
Or even in a "Eww, that's so gory!" kind of way..

.... it's far more pyschological.... it creeped me out.

I'm not too fond of the "horror" genre in general, but I do like a good suspenseful game. Bioshock definitely had some good moments in it, especially with the splicers that were like the Weeping Angels from Dr. Who. They only moved when your back was turned. And the houdini splicers were you could see their shadow run across the wall and turn around and they'd be gone.
I played one a long time ago on PC that had some good tense moments. Clive Barker's Undying freaked me out in spots.

Condemned (1 & 2) were both quite scary in their ways.
Again, quite psychological with the scariness - but also quite bleakly oppressive in the combat, which mostly involved fist-fighting with homeless drunks in back alleys and smashing their heads in with lead pipes ( or fighting black oil monsters against a background of black oil).
I picked up both copies for under ?10... definately worth it.

I found Condemned 2 more disturbing than scary. If this was a "Most Disturbing" competition, though, then I cast my vote to Manhunt. Seriously, that game is ******ed up.

I also found a flash game that makes me s*** myself sometimes.

Whispers: Room 6 (http://www.addictinggames.com/adventure-games/whispers-room-six-game.jsp)
Level of scariness? EXTREME

P.S. I love horror games.

Just finished playing it. If you thought that was terrifying, then I highly suggest you never play Amnesia. Ever. The flash game made me flinch once, and it was because of a cat during the backyard area. Other than that, it was way to predictable and repetitive for me to get scared from it. I think we need other people to play it and give us a verdict on it. But yeah, the ending was really nice, something I wish more games would do in the same fashion.

P.S. Updating OP.

Some awesome games to play in this thread! I've been meaning to try the Fatal Frame games forever, so I might check them out this week before Halloween is over.

Here are my personal faves:

Alan Wake - Definitely high on the psychological/creepy factor. The story is pretty cool and the atmosphere is stunning.
Silent Hill 2 - The story really grabbed me, it was mature and deep. And of course, Pyramid Head.
Resident Evil Remake on the Gamecube - This remake made RE scary again. I still clearly remember the first time I entered a room and one of the zombies I had killed earlier got up and ran after me

If you can find it, Clock Tower by Human (PS1) is my all time top scary game. It's ironic because the story and acting were pretty mundane as far as horror games go, but I've not since played a game that can create the sense of panic that that game did. Like any good slasher movie, you're locked inside a building and helpless against the killer...all you can do is run and hide when he shows up.

I got another one.
Super Filly Adventure, Go for the Blank Flank Ending.
Blank Flank :
1) Set clock between 11pm and 5:59am.
2) Start game.
3) Hear every piece of dialogue including that of Pinkie before you've got all the invites.
4) Make good muffin. Donate to Derpy.
5) Check every piece of dialogue out again (also Zacora's). Make sure not to trigger Super Filly.
6) Go to the Evergreen forest.

Its just Mild but messed up for a pony game.

Played the silent hill 1 demo in 99 but I played the whole game this weekend. I thought it would be outdated and boring and in one way it is. The graphics are terrible and the controls are outdated but the sound more than makes up for it. Seriously it holds up even today.2012-03-18 17:10:00
