Realistic space level

Archive: 23 posts

Hi!

I'm looking to make a realistic (as far as possible) level about spaceflight... thing is, my first attempt at this was in lbp 1 and was shocking and I still can't make my level look remotely nice... nevertheless, it would be good if some of you here could help me out!

The basic premise is this: a team of astronauts go into space and spend 5 days in a space station doing 5 different tasks in preparation of the opening of a space hotel for tourists before re entering back to earth. Then a HAL9000 style moment happens while the astronauts are adding final touches to the space hotel's tech and are trapped there, having to go to the main core to deactivate the AI and reactivate the life support so that the other astronauts in the main space station aren't killed.

I want to maintain a realistic look to the level so the main space station will have to be quite small and cramped, but the space hotel can be anything (fitting the style of course). I have already made a version of the MLP used by NASA :

Real:

And a rocket with multiple stages that works pretty much how I want it to:

I would be very grateful if some of you could give me feedback on the look of the parts I have done and if someone with a little more experience than me could online create with me to shell out the look and feel of the level!

Thanks!

Hey man! It sounds like a lot of fun and the crawler looks amazing! The rocket is probably alot better then i could make, but i feel like the tip of it reminds me of some type of princess castle from disney world. No offence intended, just trying to be helpful. Add me on psn : scoobybloo2oo
I cant wait for this to be finished, sounds awsome!

Using the squarish materials for the rocket looks a bit too flat to me. Maybe try finding some Mm objects that are cylindrical and sticker them. What springs to mind is the washing up liquid bottle but I'm sure there's many more. Combine that with decorations and possibly merge objects to create a much more 3 dimensional looking rocket. Send me a message if you need any help with merging and such. I recreated the Apollo 11 in 3Ds Max so I know how painstaking the details can be, the engines!2011-10-08 19:53:00

The AI sounds kinda Hollywood and unrealistic. What purpose does an AI serve in a space hotel?2011-10-08 21:02:00

Thanks! I know it looks like a disney castle but I had to make it big enough for 4 sackpeople in c-nators and so that their heads wouldn't be sticking out... that it probably the part which annoys me most so I'm not offended any feedback is good!

I didn't think of that! If you've made apollo 11 in 3ds then I would be very happy if you could help me with this! The only problem is that it took me AGES to get the multistage logic right and I won't be online this week cause I have controlled assessments in school so I have to concentrate on that, so maybe next week? If you could help me with the design of the launch tower as well it would be good cause I fail at structures like that!

I love mass effect, 2001 and Alien lol! Plus, as fun as it would be to go into space for real, a space sim would be EXCRUCIATINGLY boring without something exciting hapenning! Anyways, an AI would be able to manage all the systems in a space hotel for less than human staff, or ease the demands on any human staff, thus reducing the number of people needed. The amount of money that the owner of a space hotel would save on getting staff into space to serve on the hotel would be immense and there is also the element of human error, but the case about AIs is that unless they're shackled (like EDI from ME2) they will have full control and their "intelligence" will cause them to question their purpose.

If you lot want to help, then I will probably be online next week after my controlled assessments are finished!

Everything looks great and I am with OneEyedBanshee about the rocket. When you start putting it together I would recommend using the merge tool as well. You can really pull off some cool designs with it. LBP2-Torials 23: Using the Merge Glitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7Uc9Cs9QEs&hd=1)2011-10-09 13:36:00

oh, and if you use 3d layers and think they take up too much tthermo, try ghosting them. this removes the physics, and Mm has used this method before!2011-10-09 13:40:00

didn't they patch this glitch in the latest update????!!!!

EDIT: Ok they haven't thank god! here is the new starting point i've just whipped up in my study break!:

whoah whoah whoah, hold up here pl0x,

1. wth is ghosting and why dont i know how to do it already?? (i always have thermo problems with 3d glitch levels)

2. im pretty sure Mm have never used the background glitch layers.

I think he means that Mm use ghosting with their standard components to cram more into their levels than the thermo would allow

Remember there is no sound in space!

Yeah I was wondering how I could mute the rockets... oh well im just going to have to use movers for the capsule then...

Just use the global sound tweaker to mute sfx or whatever the rocket sound is classified as.2011-10-10 22:45:00

here is a badly put together image of the new design rocket! looks quite nice I think even though the logic will be quite tedious (but easier than the last one!

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/35b6de0e6ad7049b2b17073df4828bf031d3ed03.jpg

Only one teeny problem: it weighs 36(!) times as much as the old rocket... this weighs around 9 4x4 large grid 3 thick metal blocks while the old one weighs the same as 4 1x1 large grid 3 thick metal blocks... maybe a gravity tweaker which turns on when the engines are activated to change the mass?
I could also do with some help with making the launch tower, so if anyone has any suggestions it would be good!

Looking good. I thought I'd just drop off this little idea as I did have an idea about making a level based on a Space Shuttle launch using the Move, but ultimately decided against it.

The idea was that the Move would be the Shuttle and you had to orientate the controller according to how the actual Shuttle launches in real life (like how it twists and slightly tilts its angle of accent) and then jettison the rocket boosters and fuel tank at the correct time. All of this shown on screen with gauges and your Move having to be within certain limits.

It could be quite cool as an intro to your level here, just a thought! Either way your visuals are looking snazzy!

That is actually a brilliant idea! Talk about realism! Uuuuuuuuuuuuuunfortunately, I don't actually have a move... (I know i'm slow...) so I can't actually make that... i might try something like that with the sixaxis controls on the controllinator though! thanks for the idea!

If you know how much rocket thrust it takes to move 1 4x4 grid square you can calculate how much thrust your rocket will need.

Also, technically a gravity tweaker doesn't affect mass but weight. Perhaps you could increase the gravity tweaker in strength as the rocket increases in altitude. It's also worth remembering as more rocket stages are discarded your rocket will become much lighter even before the effect of gravity is taken into account. Too bad the level space we get isn't higher.

Sheesh I forgot about this forum! I was swamped down by the unholy combination of coursework, exams and Battlefield 3! Anyway, I went back to LBP2 yesterday and continued with my level... This is what I've done so far:

- Added the basic mechanics of the rocket: It now splits into stages and the capsule is controllable. The thrust and stage timings have been calibrated roughly but I might make some more adjustments in the sequencer later.

- Started work on a simple HUD for the capsule: It tells you the direction you need to travel and what the craft's angle has to be. It follows the capsule and depends on tag sensors in the space station. I also plan to a cone shape HUD with distance markers as you approach the station.

- Made a new launch tower: Thought of making a complicated one, got bored, made a single piece of the tower and copied it. It also has a retracting bridge leading to the rocket and is 60 big blocks high! There's also a lift with a very simple placeholder movie camera sequence which I wanted to try out.

- Began work on the Space Station!:
http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m495/sherminator19/spacestation.png

What needs to be done:

- Opening sequence, probably in a bus taking you to the tower and a preflight check followed by an epic cutscene!

- Making up with 4 different activities

- Making the Space Hotel and possibly a small Space Port (maybe using the same modules as the space station with flashier materials)

- Epic final day ending with a splashdown and recovery!

Sorry about the delay with the reply!

I thought I'd try to video a portion of my level so far but my phone's camera isn't that good... Here it is anyway with many of the mechanics that I want:

If you cant get anything from the vid, here's some screenshots from a play mode trial of my level:
