SA Special - Metal Gear Solid Pack

Hello it's Shining Aquas, and this time I'm doing a special review on the Metal Gear Solid Bonus Pack. As many of you probably know, the Metal Gear Solid Bonus Level Pack is a set of 5 levels and a survival challenge all based on the Metal Gear Solid franchise, and with it is included a plethora of new stickers, building materials, basic costumes, and the heavily anticipated Paintinator, a gun that shoots paintballs and adds a whole new type of gameplay factor to this platformer. So, what do the levels consist of? Specifically, there are 5 levels, labeled ACT I-V, and each one expands the short storyline one after another. ACT I is a sticker based rail shooter (like say House of the Dead or Time Crisis), ACT II serves as a tutorial level for the Paintinator ACT III is about half Metal Gear Solid stealthy gameplay, half Ratchet and Clank platforming shoot'em up. ACT IV is another Ratchet and Clank styled shooting platformer ACT V is a boss battle that feels very similarly to a Ratchet and Clank style boss. .........hmm, looking at it now there isn't a whole lot of variety between the stages is there? Pretty much every stage is just shooting the heck out of everything with the paint gun, and dodging an ever growing number of plasma bullets. I think it was when I hit the 3900 point on the Survival Challenge that I started thinking to myself "This isn't Metal Gear Solid, this is friggin Touhou, just with Metal Gear Solid wallpaper all over it." Does that mean that this pack is a bust? ABSOLUTELY NOT, IT WAS AWESOME. Honestly I haven't had this much fun with LBP since I first bought the game. The entire pack is worth it just for the Paint gun and the Survival Challenge, and the levels aren't bad either. They obviously put a good amount of time and effort on this side project and hopefully the game will gain a bunch of new potential with the Paint gun. There are a few notable things to be aware of within these levels: story, function, and flow. The Storyline is top notch, apparently you are Solid Snake (or at least his sacklike replacement), and must infiltrate an enemy base where apparently some evil machine is mass-producing Trophy Levels and covering all of LittleBigPlanet with them. As far as I can tell, I don't really need to go any further than this because Media Molecule just laughingly made fun of their own game so...SOOOOOOOOOO hard, that I'm convinced that the MM team has won at irony forever. Flow is certainly well managed, as the dificulty of the stages is fairly well managed, and while the toughness tends to make more of a concave arc of progression rather than a parabola-type*, it still rises a good amount over the course of each level. The learning curve is perfectly adjusted for everyone pretty much. Function is the pack's most notable feature, the paint gun allows for an infinite amount of new possibilities and hopefully now we will see some amazingly good monster battles in the custom levels ahead. The only thing that disappointed me with the pack was that the Paint gun was amazing, but I ended up spending the whole set of levels waiting for the moment where they would put together the Paint Gun with the Jet Pack, and make the most awesome thing in existence, but unfortunately I didn't see any use of the Jetpack in any of the levels. Maybe somebody will pick up on the idea in a custom level or something. Regardless, it's still amazingly fun, totally worth the $6, and should keep you entertained for hours. Final Score: 9.5 / 10 Just remember to play this level with an icepack, your index finger might be hurting something fierce after jamming the R1 button as much as you will. On a side note, SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!! *Concave means that the dificulty starts off really easy, gets hard really fast, and then stays about that hard for the rest of the game. Parabola means that it is easy for most of the way and then the dificulty spikes suddenly close to the end. | 2008-12-24 02:19:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |
Cool review. Is it even possible to use a paintinator and jetpack at the same time? did you test to see if it was possible? I hope it is because that would make a great addition to my level | 2008-12-24 02:28:00 Author: Gondito Posts: 1082 |

Yeah, that was the first thing I tried while messing around with new stuff in create mode. I didn't expect it to work, but I was hopeful. = I suppose I'm not the only one who got a "Ratchet and Clank" vibe from these levels. | 2008-12-24 04:24:00 Author: gameguy888 Posts: 159 |
If you die is there a paradox? Good review, cannot wait to play them. | 2008-12-24 08:34:00 Author: Boomy Posts: 3701 |
Wow, what a huge oversight to not allow the jetpack and the paintinator! As soon as he mentioned that combination, all kinds of ideas started flowing in my mind and now its been shattered. But man, what an awesome level pack and set of items. I love MM with a devotion close to cult-like obsession. | 2008-12-24 15:03:00 Author: Justin Hopewell Posts: 135 |
Has a first Level pack(exept the christmas one). Its really great. If we can expect updates like that every 1-2 months, i'll be impressed and super satisfied. | 2008-12-24 17:51:00 Author: [OGM]CrAcKhEaD Posts: 26 |

I guess the only thing I'm wondering is how in bloody blue barnacles did this BS befall? If Media Molecule made the actual decision to not allow jetpack plus gun, then the whole group of Media Molecule needs to be shot in the foot. Maybe then they'll think twice before incorporating any other bad ideas. If on the other hand they just didn't consider the possibility of both, then it obviously wasn't the same Media Molecule because there was way to much detail in Little Big Planet for them to missed out on any of it. Honestly, I hope they patch this thing up because they are probably going to be flooded in an ocean of complaints about not being able to fly out of said ocean while holding the 9mm at the same time. Okay that was just a horrible metaphor, I think I might be losing my touch. | 2008-12-24 19:32:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |

True words... and yeah, the jab at trophy levels was classic. Despite their rule against interference and preference, they've really tried their hardest to balance the scales and at least be vocal about the different between quality and crap. Although, I did see Ramp make it's way back onto page 1 heh... some people just never learn. | 2008-12-25 02:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
Both the jetpack and the paintball thing are powerups. The jetpack allows for movable grab switch puzzles, like jigsaws. Those things would be impossible while holding a paint gun, as R1 is used to fire and you are not able to grab anything while holding it. I think it was a deliberate decision to only allow only one player power up at a time. On the bright side though, this leaves the possibilities for more power ups to appear in the future. | 2008-12-25 12:09:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
with two players working co-operatively and a clever contraption you could have jet pack and paintgun together.... | 2008-12-31 00:51:00 Author: chillum007 Posts: 228 |
Wow your so right chillum...just imagine the 2x capabilities! | 2008-12-31 01:09:00 Author: Neverynnal Posts: 374 |
One person holds the jetpack and grabs onto the other player, who holds the paint gun. It should work, as long as the players don't accidently touch the other power up. Still... though, I wonder what the point is. I guess it would make for some relatively simple to set up x2 sections though. | 2008-12-31 11:32:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
