Goodbye Hair...

Archive: 30 posts

I am 16 years old and have just recently started parting my hair. I used to have all my hair brushed straight down and in my face, but I got annoyed with it. However, now that I can actually see my hairline, I noticed my hair is thinning. Three years ago I had SUPER thick and long hair, but now it lays a lot closer to my head, is lighter, and thinner. My family doesn't have any extensive history of baldness, just my dad from what I know, but all my other family members had raging heads of hair. It isn't out of hand at the moment, though it is noticeable. I can imagine that in another three years there won't be that much left, so I am thinking about just shaving it all off now. I can tell you right now, I will look TERRIBLE with a shaved head (imagine a martian with a large tumor on its forehead), but it's not like I am all that good looking right now anyway, so what does it matter, right?

Any way, I do have a few questions for you guys. Is anyone else's hair thinning at an early age? Did you go through this in your teens, and if so, how did it turn out? And probably one of the most important questions, why does having hair matter so much to people? I don't really care if I have to shave my head, but part of me feels like I will miss my hair...WHY? Why can I care so little about what my hair looks like, but care so much about the fact I am losing it?

Sorry that this isn't the most interesting of topics, it just has me bothered...

I started losing my hair at 15, and I turn 20 in about 2 months, and I still have quite a bit. No bald spots, just a little thin. So don't worry much. It takes a long time And it really isn't that bad.2011-10-03 04:11:00

My advice?
Don't fight it - there is nothing sadder than a bald man desperately trying to hang on to what little hair they have left.
Face the music, get a skinhead and accept that that is the hairstyle you'll have for the rest of your life - you'll grow accustomed to it as will everyone else (unless your head is shaped like the elephant mans - in which case, you've got bigger things to worry about than a thinning hairline).

I know what you mean. My dad has thin strands of hair all combed back. Why he thinks he still needs a haircut I can't say.

I'm not too attached to my hair. When I wait too long to cut it the hair on my forehead makes me sweat too easily and I get immensely annoyed by having to constantly sweep it to the side. So recently I decided to go for a haircut as soon as it starts covering my forehead.2011-10-03 09:05:00

I don't show off my hair, I just have it and that's it. That said, I wouldn't like to lose it. But I think that, while it might look bad in the beggining, soon you (and everyone else) will get used to it. Like growing a beard or moustache. It'll become "your style".

If it helps you feel better, there was a time when half the boys in my class decided to shave off their heads. It looked weird at first, but then became normal. (although they had left the hair grow back after)

Well I always had my hair cut very short when I was in elementary. I never cared for it and people just got used to it. Of course, it wasn't until high school that I let it grow out, but I still didn't care for it.

The point: it's not really that big of a deal. Only people who are obsessive with their looks care about their hair.

Kind of letting it get to you, arent you? Not the kind of motivational speech this lad needs

I never said I was a positive person.

Then get out. We don't want to hear it. I have a receding hairline and I look like a total bad *** because of it. This glass is half full of combustible lemons. And I am going to burn your house down.

My philosophy: it's better to have no hair than to lose some and try to cover it up with a comb-over... *coughDonaldTrumpcough*2011-10-08 07:19:00

Hm...
I could leave my reply in that "hm..." only.
My motto is "as long as I will have my hair, I will enjoy them!"
I'm not losing my hair, but I have lots of white hair...30-40% now, but it's not a big matter, and, as I don't dye my hair, I won't refuse to shave my head completely if I'll start to have bald spot.
I mean, as with everyting, nothing is forever, enjoy it while it lasts, whatever it is.

Everyone in my family still has a full head of hair. I told my hair early on not to fall out and it hasn't.

Enjoy being bald, baldies.

I agree that if/when you're going bald, don't fight it with a combover. I can offer a few bits of advice to keep your hair growing:
Don't wear a hat all day long, supposedly having light pressure on the scalp makes hair follicles go dormant.
Washing your hair often can help stimulate the follicles for better growth.
Healthy diet - make sure you're getting enough vitamins. Taking a vitamin E supplement can encourage thicker and stronger hair.

I'm 37, and I would still have a full head of thick hair if I didn't shave it all over. 2011-10-09 22:05:00

I have a lot of hair, its currently down to my lower back. At about 16 or so I didn't want to go to the hair dressers because I always hated how it felt. I didn't care about it getting long at the time, I just didn't like the way it felt getting cut and everyone's attempts to get me to cut it fell on deaf ears. Over the years as it grew, people stopped badgering me and when it was still quite short but to my shoulders, I quite liked it. So then I decided to let it grow longer to see how that looked.

And since 16, I have never been. I'm 23 now, but it only took about two years to get just shorter to where it is now. My hair is also quite thin, but not drastically so. I like my long hair, I think it looks nice...even if other people don't, but that don't bother me. Looking at images of me when I had it short, I think the longer looks better. Everyone else it used to it longer now.

I'd be devastated if I lost it all though. It probably could do with being a bit thicker, but that's genes for you....knowing me, when I get older and it starts to fall out, I'll be one of those old guys with a bald top but long hair down the sides, I don't think that looks too bad either...but then again that may not happen, and the top might still be a full forest of hair....I can only hope

Can't do that.
When I'll lose my hair I'll have a goatee and tattos on my head.

If you're 16, you shouldn't have to worry too much about it yet--even if you were to lose all of your hair, there's not much you can do about it. The best thing is to accept it and not to worry.2011-10-10 17:46:00

Negative persons aren't needed. Anywhere.

That's a very negative attitude towards negative attitudes

I'm reminded of one of my favourite quotes from the Brilliant Charlie Brooker;
"As an embittered cynic, I should be programmed to vomit all over the screen at the mere sight of this, but instead, I find it strangely moving. You see, as I stare into their happy smiling faces filled with naive joie de vivre, I know they're just blissfully unaware of the crushing despair that awaits them as they venture into adulthood. The myriad disappointments, the yawning chasms of pain, the glow gnawing descent into physical decay, the sheer unrelenting horror of it all."

Best cure for baldness is to shave off your pubic hair and glue it to your head...

I find that the hairier a man is in other places, the sooner he loses the hair on his head. Why else is it that all the hairiest people I know are bald?2011-10-11 00:39:00

Yeah, negativity is needed sometimes....if you are always positive, you can easily be exploited by being trustworthy and optimistic about everybody, even those who will screw you over without a second thought

but yeah, more on topic. Afros are cool. So are flat top hair dos if that's what you call them. When I was in hospital about month a go, there was a male nurse who looked like this, right out of the 80s. He even had an earring
