LBPC Contest #5 ? The Dark Side of Disney!

Archive: 203 posts

The House of Mouse becomes the Den of Darkness

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, we present a very special contest in honor of the deliciously dark Halloween. Somewhere a Mouse is very afraid indeed, heavy is the crown...

http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/LBPCC-5.jpg

Once upon a time a man had an ambitious idea to take some of the most beloved Disney movies and turn them into something more sinister. The man quickly realized just how big a project this would be and called a meeting with his fellow Contest Crew minions of the Dark. Together they declared with a thunderous roar “give this idea to the creatures of the night and let us see what black magic they might weave!” And so it begins…

In this month’s contest we want you to take a classic Disney or Pixar movie from the list provided and twist it into something dark and sinister. Whether this means dark humor or something scary is entirely up to you. Disney has an amazing catalogue of films; their movies have touched children and adults alike from all over the world. Your levels should seek to retain that magic and wonder, we expect nothing but the best, be as ambitious as you can be. We realize just how hard it is to cram a Disney movie into an LBP level so we are being generous with our length guidelines, use those 15 minutes wisely! For inspiration/examples check out the masterful novel “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire or the recent “Red Riding Hood” (bad movie but a good example of retelling a classic story!) Remember though, this is Disney so nothing too dark! As a measuring stick ask yourself if there is any chance of the level being moderated because of the material within. If the answer is yes then tone it down a bit! Feel free to make use of cameos, we know there are lots of cool Disney characters out there and if you can find a creative way to add them into your story then all the better!

Building requirements

• Create a level based around one of the following Disney/Pixar movies. The level should have a dark, sinister theme and must be a reinterpretation of the classic story:

Pinnochio, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Bambi, Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia, Toy Story (series), Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Wall E, A Bugs Life, The Incredibles.

• Gameplay should be based around platforming ( NO MOVE LEVELS!)
• Level links are allowed
• Cutscenes are allowed but not required. Taking the 15 minute length a potential mix would be 2.5min intro, 10 minute gameplay, 2.5min outro.
• Levels should be long enough to keep the judges entertained for 15 minutes max (note that levels don't NEED to be 15 minutes!).

How to enter

• Build a level before the deadline that fits the contest description and building requirements.
• Include the text “(LBPC5)” in the level’s title. Don’t forget to add things like a nice looking badge, some tags, and a concise level description.
• Publish your level before 11:59PM GMT on 15th November, 2011.
• Post an LBP.me link to your level in this thread, so we’re sure not to miss it!
• After the deadline, the judges will put on their ghost costumes and select up to ten semi-finalists based on the scoring criteria below. The best level will be pinned/crowned winner!
• The Sackinima team will feature HD recordings of the three finalists on their youtube channel for the whole world to see!

Judging criteria

Levels will be judged according to the following criteria:
• Gameplay– Here, we’re scoring things like fun factor, balanced difficulty and freedom from glitches and bugs.
• Originality – How innovative is your creation? How well did you take the source material to create something unique yet still have it be recognizable? Your story-telling skills will play a big part here. Remember, it is possible to tell a story without cutscenes or speech bubbles, the choice is yours so be creative.
• Visuals – This is all about how good your level looks. We like detail and lighting and special effects, but try to avoid graphics-induced lag!
• Audio – Sound effects and music are a great way to turn your level into an addictive and immersive experience.

Rules and Regulations

• This contest is open to all ages and all regions. That means anyone can participate!
• All entries must be playable in LittleBigPlanet 2
• You can only enter one level (not including level links which are allowed). Duplicate entries will result in disqualification.
• The contest officially begins on 1st October, 2011 at 12:00am GMT. Previously published entries will not be accepted.
• You can co-create with up to four people, but only one person should publish the level. Team member contributions should be listed in the level description. If you are publishing as a team, this counts as the only “one entry” for each team member, so you cannot publish on your own and as part of a team, or enter as part of more than one team.
• Levels must be published unlocked and set to “Cooperative” or “Versus” in their gameplay mode.
• Levels must be published before the deadline with “(LBPC5)” in the level’s title. After the deadline, do not republish. Levels republished after the deadline will be disqualified. Exceptions may be made for quick fixes with respect to level titles, description, badges, or major game-breaking fixes, but only with the prior consent of the contest crew. If you need to request an edit, please post in this thread and send me a PM.
• Levels must be your own creation. Feel free to take inspiration from the world around you and from other levels, but don’t copy someone else’s work outright! That’s just not cool….
• Last but not least, have fun, play fair and respect other creators!

Also a little Handy FAQs for you all

Q: Can I enter a previously published level?
A: No.

Q: Can I enter a level I already have on my moon, but hasn't yet been published?
A: Yes.

Q: Once I've published my entry, can I republish it?
A: You can republish it as many times before the deadline as you like, but not after the deadline.

Q: When will the judging begin?
A: The judges may take a look at some levels prior to the deadline, but the judging proper will not begin until after the deadline.

Q: When will the results be posted?
A: We can't really give any accurate answer to this, but it will be no more than a month after the judging begins.

Good luck everyone!

ARGH! Why must you do this to me Contest Crew!!!!

I'm currently producing a twist on Disney's Snow White for Printz.... but it's not particularly dark....

Gah.... Choices choices...

I doubt I'll be able to enter, as I've been putting Printz off for months now, and the platformer element is not my forte. But good luck to all the awesome entries that are bound to come out of this one!

@Zeus, yes, The Incredibles is in the list.

Also, please read well the rules.
There's much more written in them and much less restriction than you see...
For example what does "Potential Mix" means?

Also we're here to help you with your doubts...just, please take the time to read the other contenders' questions and our answers and not ask the same thing thrice

A great and unique theme for this month's contest guys. Now you guys say you have up to 15 minutes for it, since you include gameplay as a thing you'll be judging, I'm guessing you don't mean a 15 minute movie at max, and you said cutscenes aren't necessary. Are you saying average time of finishing the level should take no more than 15 minutes?2011-09-30 12:57:00

Maximum 15 minutes, but doesnt have to be fifteen

Okay, so 15 or less. By the way, hope it's okay if I suggest a few others to add to the list of what you can make a dark recreation for. I'm just curious if these are allowed aswell.

1. Lady and the Tramp
2. Sleeping Beauty
3. Alice in Wonderland

We've given a "Potential Mix", though everyone can do as they see fit and exploit their skills.
Also gameplay must be platforming means that what you play has not to be top down view.

Thank you for your suggestions. We thought long about which movies to include and the list you see is the list creators must work with. Disney has a massive library and we really wanted to narrow it down as much as possible. I am confident that each creator will be able to find one they like from the list provided and don't forget this:

Feel free to make use of cameos, we know there are lots of cool Disney characters out there and if you can find a creative way to add them into your story then all the better!

A theme around Disney? Very unexpected indeed. Love how you guys put the effort into these contests, this one particularly has an original story behind it which really gives creators more to work with.

Anyhow, I won't say I'm entering as I've done so 3 times in past contests and always seem to drop out within 2 weeks, but hopefully I can get something done.

Disney themed contest?... Hmm... Pass!. At least I don't have to worry about wanting to enter this one.
this'll give me some time to work on my other levels I've been failing to get done. *mew

Edit: what do the winners get anyways? A Pin/ maybe a crown again?
just wondering as I just noticed It don't say very clearly what they get.

@fumetsusozo: Posted from shropshirelass on the LBPC4 Contest thread.

The good news, though, is that the update for the Move Pack will include some new secret pins one of which will be an LBPC contest winner pin. So for future contests (or at least until we are sure that the issues with Crown codes have been sorted), we will be offering the new super rare pin as the prize for the winner. Spaff confirmed to us only this afternoon that the pins will go live with the Move Pack and on that basis we felt we could carry on with the contests despite the problems with Crown codes.

The otherparts of the post talks about how they had to stop giving crown codes starting with LBPC4 Contest. As you can see, they are still giving away a rare pin that was born with the Move Pack. Unless anything has changed regarding that since then, feel free to correct me on that, but I'm pretty sure it might continue like that for the time being.

The Rules for this contest mention the possibility of a Crown as a prize as well as a pin. This is because the results won't be known until mid to late November and we're hopeful that the issues with Crown codes will have been resolved by then. We assume that the other Crown Contests running at the moment are operating on this basis too. It's a case of watch this space really. 2011-09-30 18:02:00

Not a problem, looking over it myself, I can see that they aren't too clear on it in this contest's thread, but makes more sense now with shropshire's post. Thanks for clearing it up some more

Okay I have a question:

Are we aiming to retell the original story, using a dark twist, or are we able to take it off on a tangent/omit sections/make a sequel or prequel/whatever?

As in, do we twist the actual plot, or can we lift the characters and write our own story for them?

"• After the deadline, the judges will put on their ghost costumes and select up to ten semi-finalists based on the scoring criteria below. The best level will be pinned/crowned winner!"

That wasn't clear enough? Note to all: READ. THE. RULES (and then read them again...and again...and again)

"The level should have a dark, sinister theme and must be a reinterpretation of the classic story"

So can you take the characters and create a COMPLETELY new story? Not really. There should be a connection to the source material that is recognizable but you still have a large amount of freedom within these guidelines. This means yes, you CAN omit sections, change the timeline of the story etc

Yeah I saw that. and no, I myself did not find it very clear. it says the best level will be pinned/crowned.
that's not 100% right. the Creator who ends up creating the best level will get a pin/crown for winning.
is how it should have been worded IMO. But whatever, just a small detail, not really important. *mew

not sure about this one but i could see a great potential to use the sticker tool if i did enter it.

Just wondering would it be possibl to base the level around one main disney story but have say the player get transported to another disney story or something adding to the freaky twistedness of it all.

Yes, if you can find a way to combine both stories and still have them be identifiable then more power to you!

Just to clarify what sort of freedom people have when making these levels

- You should have all the main characters in the story
- You should have recognizable locations
- The story should have some kind of connection to the source material but otherwise does not need to follow it explicitly! Feel free to omit/change/rearrange entire sections of the timeline

Just to make things easy.
You said Pinocchio hammy, I checked this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio_(1940_film)
and checked the list of character...

Pinocchio (Dickie Jones), a happy wooden puppet made by Geppetto and turned into a living puppet by the Blue Fairy.
Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards), a cheerful cricket who acts as Pinocchio's "conscience" and the partial narrator of the story.
Mister Geppetto (Christian Rub), a woodcarver who creates Pinocchio and wishes for him to become a real boy.
Figaro and Cleo are Geppetto's tuxedo cat and goldfish, respectively, who do not like each other very much until the end of the film when Pinocchio becomes a real boy.
John Worthington Foulfellow (Walter Catlett), otherwise known as Honest John, is a sly anthropomorphic fox and known criminal who tricks Pinocchio twice in the film.
Gideon is Honest John's mute and crafty anthropomorphic feline accomplice. His voice was originally to be supplied by Mel Blanc of Looney Tunes fame, but they deleted his dialogue in favor of a mute performance (i.e. Harpo Marx) just like Dopey of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, Gideon's hiccups were provided by Blanc.
Stromboli (Charles Judels), a large, sinister, bearded puppet maker and the first antagonist of the film who forces Pinocchio to perform onstage in order to make money. He speaks in an Italian accent, though he is identified as being a gypsy. He is the only villain of the film to be part of the official Disney Villains line-up.
The Blue Fairy (Evelyn Venable), the beautiful fairy who brings Pinocchio to life and turns him into a real boy at the end.
The Coachman (Charles Judels), a corrupt and sadistic coachman who owns and operates Pleasure Island. As the second antagonist of the film, he enjoys turning unruly boys into donkeys. He speaks in a Cockney accent. The look of the Coachman is like Charles Laughton in Jamaica Inn by A. Hitchcock (1939).
Lampwick (Frankie Darro), a naughty boy Pinocchio meets and befriends on his way to Pleasure Island. He turns into a donkey while the boys are shooting pool.
Monstro is the whale that swallows Geppetto, Figaro, and Cleo during their search for Pinocchio. Pinocchio is then swallowed when Monstro is eating and he and Geppetto reunite. Monstro is the third and final antagonist of the film. Monstro's whale sounds were provided by Thurl Ravenscroft.
Alexander, (Dickie Jones) is one of the boys who transformed into a donkey on Pleasure Island. He can still talk and is hurled into a special holding pen for suchlike donkeys.
so everyone that is not sure can easily check the list of characters on wikipedia.

Ha i was concidering pinocchio as well as it could be very twisted the only problem though is i don't know the story that well and don't really like it.

Could i choose another story but actually have pinocchio as the main charracter say i was to choose Beauty and the Beast but pinocchio had to save the day because of some twisted reason. I would also add some charracters from pinocchio and maybe the whale part so it would be sortof a mixed up theme but went along the main story of one of the others.

Ah just noticed Omegaslayers response that should be helpfull.

Awesome idea! I love dark and sinister styles and twisting up classics with a added flavour of wicked. Unfortunately since I've entered the last 2 contests back to back, I'm a little burnt out at the moment so I might not able to enter this one this time... but I look forward to seeing the amazing levels that this idea produces. I aim to see some beautifully designed characters & levels here & I'm sure I'll be amazed at the entries. Good luck everyone! P.S The contest crew are relentless & crazy, but that's why I love 'em. I can't seem to create levels quickly but I thought this might interesting for someone who could.

Snow White
open on castle- light happy
fade to inside
Prince pot bellied balding sloppy snoring (at table or on throne, castle trashed, dirty (cobwebs, old food etc.)
Snow White -beautiful -looking at him disgusted, goes to mirror-" I didn't think my life would turn out like this"
eerie mirror glow, mirror speaks- blames 7 dwarfs- solution - hunt down and eliminate.
Snow White searchs for 7 dwarfs eliminating each by different methods.
Two endings:
If all 7 not found- She ends up in dunguon
If all found- dream like transport- castle view from start fade inside- roles reversed, Prince goes to mirror, fade to black.

Hmmm... Lets see... I've never been able to finish my entries before... I have a huge project I'm working on... Should i enter...? That's a hard choice... If I say no right now, I'll probably come up with something epic in the last 5 days or so and rush to make it then miss the deadline and be disappointed... If I say yes right now, I'll have no idea (Well, I actually have a small one) and I'll build random stuff to try to think of something... I could probably come up with an awesome story, but no epic visuals, music, or gameplay to back it up.

Beauty and the Beast Themed
The castle is being seiged by monsters and you have to defend it.
The ball room has now become a war room.
Think of this as a play on when Sora/Roxas and friends arrive in the various games of Kingdom Hearts.
Enemies will be things of nightmares. Meaning worse than Heartless.
You play as a soldier defending the castle. You are in the 'Special Forces' division. Just because it makes it more entertaining. I'll probably give a backstory as to why he's there.
The areas will include: The Ballroom, The Courtyard, The Main Hall, and that secret passageway you use in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. No other areas will be accessable though they are referenced to.

So I'm still not sure if I should enter... I've been putting off my main project for FOREVER... But I really want a chance at that pin...

Alice's Adventure Through the Windshield

Haha, I remember that Simpsons episode!

"Here's an appealing fellow -- in fact, they're a-peeling him off the sidewalk!"

Ahhh... Anyway, this is a very good idea, I started working on a project a while ago that would be perfect for this contest. I was merely afraid of people saying "Oh god, his mind is going..." but as this contest is about doing something dire, I guess I can create anything as the ideas come

I might suggest to any potential entrants to stay away from any Chernabog themed levels (it's a trap). If I may be so bold in the assumption, I would hope that the judges would appreciate a more creative solution as opposed to everyone flocking to the most obvious choice.2011-10-01 21:39:00

I would love to choose sword in the stone, the black cauldron, treasure planet or even the fox and the hound...

Um... i read through the post and i'm not to sure on a few subjects of the matter

1. Say we use the characters and story from the said list but twist it together with another story and characters not in the list is that allowed?

2. There are absolutely no other stories we can use? (Making sure sorry)

3. About the whole chernabog thing, is that a like ban issue or is it just the fact that you think it will be to easy? Or is there no regulation on this and it was just a misconception of a poster? Because i planned a fantasia level like as in lots of spectacular colors and such but a small portion might have chernabog... would that be an issue...? i was really looking foward to doing the only one that had Mickey in it...

What exactly do you mean DarkDedede by "its a trap"

Sorry for the long wall of text i just really want to be sure and make things clear to others.

1. As already stated, we encourage people to make use of cameos. The focus should still be on the source movie though.

2. This has already been answered twice now, please read through the thread (the answer is no).

3. The rules do not mention any "ban" on Chernabog, the rules are your friend. Remember this though, we are looking for originality, everyone needs to keep that in mind. Taking an already evil character and having them stay evil is not very unique...

As the rules state, the gameplay needs to based around platforming. Not too sure what your asking about witches and spirits, the point is to take a movie from the list provided and reinterpret it in a dark, sinister way. Whether you turn a character like Snow White into a witch is entirely up to you and the story you want to tell. Although we are partly doing this contest in honor of Halloween that has no bearing on the level you need to make (ie. you don't have to have witches, pumpkins etc)

What exactly do you mean DarkDedede by "its a trap"

I was merely giving some advice. When thinking creatively, the first idea that springs to mind usually isn't usually the most unique or creative. For example, given the list of movies to choose from, obviously one of the most evil things associated these movies would most likely be the scene with Chenabog. While there's no guarantee that using him will be an issue, I'm just giving a friendly warning that it's o probably a safe assumption that a large group of your competition will automatically flock to the most obvious solution. Odds are that the judges are going to see more than their fair share of this character in the various entries. Therefore it would probably be in your best interest to choose a theme that sets you apart from the rest of the pack.

When given a list of choice to choose from for a design, I usually make it a habit to stay far far away from the easiest solution. My first assumption is if the choice is too good to be true, then it probably is. As I have said before, it's a safe assumption that many people are going to automatically go for the easiest solution, so picking something else already gives you a slight edge over the competition. Think of the easy choice as a type of "honeypot," and most are going to swarm straight to it (which is why I called it a trap). Whether intentionally included in the list for that reason or not, you can think of it as a a means of thinning out some of the competition. Personally, I would make a choice that not only challenges me to push my skills, but also has a greater chance to result in my audience being surprised and delighted.

That said, it is also important to understand that it's not the elements in your piece, but the arrangement of the elements that you choose to include that makes a good composition. What you choose to do with your work is ultimately up to you. Just remember that it is also important to keep your audience in mind when making your decisions. Seeing that this is a contest, where it is your goal to impress a select few, I would think it would be in any entrants best interest to dream up ways to not only keep the judges attention, but give them an experience that they can remember, well after they've gone through the rest of the competition.

Anyways, good luck to everyone. I look forward to see what everyone comes up with.

What an interesting idea for a contest! You guys have outdone yourselves this time. I've never been particularly interested in entering these contests because a month isn't very long to create something good and none of the themes have ever really blown my skirt up. This one is intriguing, though, and I already have an idea that I think would be at least fairly unique and that I would have fun doing. Sadly, however, I don't have nearly the amount of free time these days that I used to (I haven't even popped in my copy of lbp2 for over a month), so I doubt I'll be entering. Still, I'll do some tinkering and see if it takes off.

Quick question: how do you decide if a level is 15 minutes long? I mean it might take 25 minutes for you to finish but only 10 minutes for me.

lol, good question. I like to think that judging panel is very good at LBP and if you can finish your level in 10 min then it shouldn't take us any more then 15! The point is we don't want 30 minute epics, use your judgement and ask yourself whether your level seems too long. Everyone should also keep in mind that we put no emphasis on making your level overly complex and technical. Both of the previous contests were geared toward more logic-based stuff and this one is definitely focused on the more artistic side of things

Also, I spoke with Omega about this a bit, but last we spoke he wasn't sure the answer. You say that we can create into teams of up to 4 people. I assume there is only one crown up for grabs, so we'd have to decide who in out team gets that...but what about the pins? Does everyone in the team get it?

So no worrying about judges stopping to stare at some creator's amazing visuals taking up your 15 minutes? Will there be like more than one play, such as at least one stopping and going to look into details, originality, gameplay, etc. while at least one other playthrough being timed?

You should try to edit your level as much as possible so that it fits into those 15 minutes...

Stickers created with the MOVE pack are acceptable, NO MOVE ALLOWED refers to gameplay.

I would once again encourage everyone to read through the rules at least 3 times, some of you are asking questions that have very clear answers already. You risk getting your level disqualified by not adhering to the rules, that should come as no surprise.

Rules and Regulations
? You can co-create with up to four people, but only one person should publish the level. Team member contributions should be listed in the level description. If you are publishing as a team, this counts as the only ?one entry? for each team member, so you cannot publish on your own and as part of a team, or enter as part of more than one team.

Even if you would send it, it still depends on how exactly you would execute your plot, we don't know your style.

If you're wondering if it's too scary, read what Ock has said in his opening post.

Remember though, this is Disney so nothing too dark! As a measuring stick ask yourself if there is any chance of the level being moderated because of the material within. If the answer is yes then tone it down a bit!
Good luck!

? Levels must be your own creation. Feel free to take inspiration from the world around you and from other levels, but don't copy someone else?s work outright! That?s just not cool?.

I read a dark and twisted version of the little mermaid. It's a short story that I really liked and I think it might work for this contest. But would that not be my own creation? Or is that "inspiration from the world around you"?

Sorry, bagheadinc. Your question hasn't been overlooked but we've been having a discussion behind the scenes about what the right approach should be and we needed to involve the site staff too as this is not just a decision for the Contest Crew.

We've come to the conclusion that LBPC pins should be treated in just the same way as a Crown. That means that in most contests there will only be one up for grabs and it will be awarded to the person who publishes the winning entry, even if a team of people helped create the level. As with Crowns, if the winner (i.e. the winning PSN ID) already has a pin, then the pin will be awarded to the runner up instead (and not to anyone who might have helped in creating the winning entry).

There would be an exception for any contest which was specifically advertised as a co-create contest and where more than one pin was on offer for the winning entry.

Hope that helps.

First, I gotta stress how much I respect the contest crew... seriously, Ock and Mother Misty? Gold Standard Stuff! And I in no way mean any disrespect to the other members... I am sincerely jealous of you guys... With that out of the way, I understand this current contest is scheduled to coincide with Halloween (an unmoveable deadline), but I'm a little big miffed at the monthly nature of this beast.

For an individual who does not eat, drink, and sleep LBP; 30 days is a short period of time to design build and test a crown achieving level. You guys are basicly excluding me becasue I am fully invested in life. A grown-up with kids and responsibilities.

Now, I understand that's just me and my deal... but I see no reason why the building period couldn't be extended to say 45 days? Announce mid-month the coming months contest theme. IDK, you guys play all the levels. Seems to me there's been a few that sure could've benefited from more time. A handful that are great. And the majority that the Sands of Time itself couldn't help.:hrmf:

Just a thought guys! Thanks Again!

Question for Contest Crew...

I read and reread the rules like 4 times, but I still have a question that cannot be answered by them. I was thinking about not posting this, for fear of someone stealing the idea, but in the end, I had to have an answer.

I am planning on twisting Aladin around, but the problem was, could we base our level off of a videogame that twists the story already? This is my key issue, and I have to get an answer soon so I can start. (Deadlines feel so short, after all.)

Basically, around 3 years ago, Sega came out with a old Sonic game called "Sonic and the Secret Rings" it basically took the Aladin Characters, transformed them to like like Sonic-ish people, and then had a new plot. Would this be okay to base my level off of?

IDK, you guys play all the levels. Seems to me there's been a few that sure could've benefited from more time. A handful that are great. And the majority that the Sands of Time itself couldn't help.:hrmf:

Just a thought guys! Thanks Again!

I agree with this completely. The month long deadline is way to short for certain competitions especially ones like this. I do also think the contest crews do a great job but i know a lot of people including myself who work more days in a month then they get off so therefore will be unable to finish and test a playable level for some of these contests as i found with my entry into the last contest the level didn't have time to be tested properly therefore has so many issues that it will more than likely not get very far.

BTW if we can't finish the whole level in time would it be alright to publish half the level with half the story or will that have no chance of winning anything or getting an honorable mention at least if it is good enough that is? Due to work hours this is only the second contest i have entered so i'm not sure how it works exactly.

@Gravel - As a fellow grown-up with child I can relate to what you are saying. Your suggestion is seriously being considered, personally I agree with you

Question for Contest Crew...I read and reread the rules like 4 times, but I still have a question that cannot be answered by them.?I am planning on twisting Aladin around, but the problem was, could we base our level off of a videogame that twists the story already?

Actually, your question has been answered very clearly. The level must be based off the movies themselves not off adaptations of the movies.

So do I, i may not be an adult. But i'm 14 and in year 10. I have alot of exams and 1 month won't be enough to make what i want to make. I really hope it is extended as i am quite upset that i'll have to scrap it if the deadline isn't extended...

Also... will the level be marked down if i don't include Stromboli or Honest John? Them 2 and Gideon and really the evil guys and i've got evil guys already.. if i had them it'll go caca poopoo...

I never drempt this deadline would be extended... Thank You so much Contest Crew for considering my post and then acting so quickly. I've never met a deadline I liked... While I still have no faith in my creating process speed-- this extension has given me the slightest glimmer of hope.

In way of thanks, I hope you enjoy this pic of two of my actors. They are inanimate. So the camera will be the only thing moving in cutscenes... I really brought out the 'Buddy Hackett' in Mr. Smee, thing is; I'm not sure there's supposed to be any Buddy Hackett in Smee.

To make things clearer, we'll try in the future to balance the contests deadline by the difficulty of the theme.
So, this is not an exception, this is the start of a different way to handle contests

Has my post been missed? I read the rules and saw "level links" as in the plural? So is it 2 or 3

Well, the judges said it has to take them no longer than 15 minutes to finish, and cutscenes count as part of the 15 minutes. So there might not be a reason to use too many level links, but if you do, I suppose not too many or that would just get annoying. Sorry if I didn't really help much xD

@ Gravel: Every time I see something b you, I'm automatically blown away, curses. >_< I know the deadline's tight and you need to work diligent, but if you need someone to test that sort of masterpiece, I'd be most willing to ^^ And good luck with the contest by the way.

@Lordwarblade: Wow, beautiful room area for your entry, the light effect used through the window is superb! Like I said with Gravel, if you need anyone to beta test it, I'd do my best to try finding some bugs, although it's fine either way with me. Breaking people's levels is what I do best

I believe that the level amount is basically as many as you wish, but the playtime should be around 15 minutes.

After all, they did say that level links were allowed because of thermo problems and massive design.

And thanks to all who asked for an extended deadline, I am so glad that the Contest Crew extended it.

sooooooo, yeah. I've been going back several pages and reading all the post. I like to see if anyone has published yet. Bonner, yours are always gems, I can't wait to see this one.
Anyway, I really don't like to beat a dead horse, I mean it's dead already c'mon, what's the point. Some of the questions in here guys, c'mon! Really? Seriously? I don't want to have to make another "unofficial contest FAQ."
Someone asked if they could make a level out of something that wasn't in the list!? READ! THE! OP! that's original post for you not in the know. Here is what you're making your level from :

Building requirements
• Create a level based around one of the following Disney/Pixar movies. The level should have a dark, sinister theme and must be a reinterpretation of the classic story:
Pinnochio, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Bambi, Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia, Toy Story (series), Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Wall E, A Bugs Life, The Incredibles.

If it's not in the list, the answer is NO. Right? Am I wrong contest crew? Did I miss a post where you said, "you know what. Forget the list, we know Mary Poppins wasn't listed, but go right ahead." *Note*Mary Poppins was just used as an example. No one has asked to use that one....yet. :/

I'm eventually going to have to put a disclaimer at the end of my post like the "real" Mac

This rant has been brought to you by your friendly neighborhood wiseacre. The views and opinions by this wiseace do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of the Contest Crew, LBPC, MM, Sony or the interwebs

I concur. That is why I usually don't enter contests. I tend to want to create levels I personally would be worthy of a crown. And, since I work and have a family, created levels of that caliber in 30 days is almost a gamble for me to undertake. Unless, it happened to be something I was already working on.

I think 45 days would be fantastic!

I think what he's trying to say is he wants to put in the effort for a level that he really thinks would be deserving of a crown, but 30 days just wouldn't cut it for him with his schedule. I don't think he's really trying to brag or anything like that.

Although Omega is right, the deadline has already been extended to November 15th.

I'd just like to take a moment to thank the members of the contest crew. At a really tough point in my life, you guys and girls managed to somehow get my creative juices flowing and get me creating again.

Alas, this contest entry has grown way out of my control... I don't work linear. I'll probably need 5 levels and a hub to tell this tale.

I'm gonna try to throw together and open the third, "Crocs-Cove" for a limited-time at the deadline. I cant believe I look so forward to this game again! And that's with RAGE and BATMAN right next to it!

As a stand alone level, Croc's Cove, probably doesnt fit the contest requirements... but I'd like to have something ready to show my appreciation and gratitude.

I really am bad at creating levels... It's hard, but having fun all the same! To be able to say that again, is more valuable than that crown.

See you on the 15th...:hrmf:

Man, you're right, you do need to get on LBP2 more, let alone play your own levels. Anyway. I didn't get to playing The Great Tree series of yours, but those MARVEL levels were stunning, not sure if you brought them over to LBP2, but like some other LBPC5 entries that arout, I'll make sure to get to playing this one.

Anyway, great idea for the contest, crew, and when these final days grow short on those trying to put in the finishing touches, yet still miraculously make it right before the horn goes off, I wish you guys good luck on the judging.

P.S. I'm pretty sure Gravel is the only one who still uses titles in his posts, as sad as that might be

? Levels must be published unlocked and set to ?Cooperative? or ?Versus? in their gameplay mode.
? Cutscenes are allowed but not required. Taking the 15 minute length a potential mix would be 2.5min intro, 10 minute gameplay, 2.5min outro.

erm dont this kinda confilct are our team safe or should it be changed please reply fast deadline is close^^ Cherrs

Sorry, the reference to setting the gameplay mode to co-operative or versus is a mistake. It's a hangover from the version of the rules we had for LBPC2 which was a multiplayer contest. So you can ignore that bit. I'm not sure if that answers your question. Let us know if you were worried about something else.

Apologies for any confusion.

@OmegaSlayer I think its the theme and the dificulty that can come from it that prevented people from entering as well as the fact its a very short time period considering that its the holidays soon and people are going to be very busy the next two months.

Honestly, I figured there wouldn't be that many entries. This contest is hard!!! You want a good entry so you have to be a pretty good artist to capture a disney character and have it be recognisable. Story, cutscenes, and interesting gameplay. This was a huge demand for a contest with a 30 day deadline. I know you guys extended the deadline but that was only a help to those who chose to enter right away. That being said, I will be very amazed if a winner is crowned that has top-notch quality in all those areas.2011-11-15 01:39:00

For the non-twitter users...

Hey Sackpeople, is a Crown a reason enough to go on A Quest For Glory?
More later, soon...definetely today

This will be even harder, but our purpose is to try to raise the bar of quality and creativity

Hi. I made a dark lvl based on Cinderella for LBPC5 (LBP.me http://lbp.me/v/7sdbyx).
This is my 1st time to take part in a contest and also might be the last time, because I knew that it is so hard to create a lvl for a contest. I hope you guys enjoy my lvl and have a wonderful your LBP life. (>_<)

Thanks for entering! We're really looking forward to playing all the levels.

Sorry, you had a tough time with your entry - this contest did have tricky theme. Hope you change your mind about entering again!

Konnron, you might just have missed the deadline

No, it's OK. The deadline is 11.59 pm (GMT) tonight. It's only 7.33 pm at the moment.

I added some decorations the other day, and it glitched my scoreboard - wouldn't show the sticker I wanted to share. I tired everything I could think of, and ended up with glitchy sackbots (very bad), and no idea what happened. In the end, I loaded my backed up profile, put my prize in a bubble and stuck it to the scoreboard (at least you can see that you're getting a prize) and republished about 10 min before the cutoff. Yikes! That was close.
Good luck to everyone!
