STAR WARS: Escape From the Death Star: err...Etc! (Special Edition)

Archive: 34 posts

Hey All!

Finally (been a long time coming!) published my latest level. Started out as an update (some familiar dialogue and bits for those who've played the original) and ended up being WAY bigger. 3 levels, hopefully a lot of fun. And SKIPPABLE CUT SCENES (yes midnight & Aya, your fault). Well most of them anyway, you'll still have to wade through a couple that aren't for practical reasons.

Thanks a lot to Mr Fusion, Jake Putz, Basketsnake, L1ghtmare, Psyntens, AlleyCat, Ladylyn& Cattastrofic who all helped in getting the level into a finished state.

Please, let me know if you find any bugs, 3 levels at once makes me nervous, lol.

This level link situation is a bit dire isn't it. : / I had them on a perm switch and they still don't work half the time, and publishing them as separates means the first two won't register plays as there's no scoreboard. pfft.2011-09-30 11:42:00

Yeh, I've been scrambling around trying to find the best solution to the link problems, publishing them as separate but that brought its own problems in regards to limiting the players, putting in scoreboards etc (too much faffing for me at this point) so gone back to how it was and will have to settle for some players not getting through. Great! The laughable thing is I spent twice as long playtesting this one to totally avoid any problems once published, and it's borked from something I completely didn't anticipate.2011-09-30 13:25:00

Didn't even realize you had published this. I didn't have you on my creator hearted list, although I'm positive I did that a looooong time ago. That has been fixed.

I had a friend in my pod when I went to play, turns out the 1 player recommendation isn't a recommendation at all!
I third to sell him to the Jawa, but I guess he wasn't worth enough.

I'll give it a go tonight. Excited to have a new SW level.

I'm ready for Empire!

WOW! Your new level!!! I am so happy that you published it! It has outstanding visuals and story remake! Excellent gameplay with great obstacls and mini-games! Amazing creation! I love it! And very cool using sackbot features! Also beautiful cut-scenes! It is really master piece!

And here is the video of your level (sorry it is a little bit long, I had some trouble in few places):

I gotta say, I've been so busy lately I've had no time to play games..... none.....

I was sitting in my office coding on an Android, and popped into LBPC to take a quick gander of what's going on.... New Star Wars Level!!! My son walked in and saw it - "PLEASE Daddy, play the new Star Wars Level!".

I hopped up and went to the living room to give it a go. My impression?

This made my week! Gorgeous graphics and fantastic use of lighting and depth. The gameplay is perfectly balanced and fun all the way through, with lots of diversity.

Jules.... you've outdone yourself this time. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. I can't even count the times my son and I both laughed as I worked my way through. Even parts that were difficult were designed so well, it was a joy to die multiple times.

And the icing on the cake? The best use of the fart sound object ever!

The pacing on this one was fantastic. The little robot you ride on around the deathstar had the perfect speed and personality. The laser fire was perfect. There were parts, such as the light sabre duel between Darth Vader and Obi-wan, that seemed like you spent hours meticulously getting the sackboy cinematics perfect.

Thank you so much for this creation. It was probably so much work and frustration to finish, and I can only imagine the frustration of dealing with the level links.... but I for one had no issues whatsoever, and I had a blast working through it.

Another job well done, Julesyjules. This is by far the funniest, most exhilarating, and the most challenge worthy level you have ever made.

VISUALS:
The Death Star interior design looked polished and epic. Let's not forget some laugh out loud scenes such as a Jawa floating around the SW title and Leia, Han, and Chewy riding on the tiny droids.

SOUND:
The musics fitted well in this level, and the sound effects are extremely great. The sound change around the low gravity area is clever too. I agree with CCubage, best use of fart sound effect ever.

GAMEPLAY:
The platform variety of this level is a lot of fun and quite challenging. The little droid ride is very good, and the Princess Leia sackbot part is funny and exciting. At first, I had no idea what I'm supposed to do in the area where I try to pass through the guards to rescue Leia until I grabbed a floor around the siren decoration. Maybe you should have someone add a dialogue about pressing R1 around that decoration, but I'm sure players will figure that out.

OVERALL:
Like what I said at the introduction, this is by far the funniest, most exhilarating, and the most challenge worthy level you have ever made. Looking forward to your next installment. A yay, heart, and positive review.

Yes, yes, YES! I actually played your first two Star Wars levels last week, and assumed that that was going to be it simply because it had been so long since the last one. They were fantastic, and I'm going to play this immediately.2011-10-01 02:46:00

Thanks for the comments guys, and nice to see Cubb and Gravel pop by, you guys don't get seen much these days! The link thing seems to have gotten a little better, I deleted and republished the 2nd and 3rd levels a day into publishing as part of a mutli-pronged effort to try and refresh and stabilise them, no comments about them since, so it's helped at least a bit. Glad you liked it. And big thanks for the vid Dom, thats awesome of you. 30 mins, no shame there. ; )2011-10-01 12:21:00

Amazing level(s) jules! Lots to like in this one, you've come up with some really fun/creative platforming sections. The controllinator section with the red/blue floor was pretty neat. The co-op section with Leia also looked like it was going to be very charming and fun...grabbing her feet to swing over to stuff, etc. She did get stuck however after a bad throw...I'll have to retry later. I did upload a photo...you can sorta see Leia stuck above behind the cage material. HTH2011-10-01 17:43:00

Wow! Just Wow! I played last night and Jules, you have outdone yourself. This is what I put "in game:" I said it before and I'll say it again. The best Star Wars levels on LBP. This by far exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be good, but good googamooga this was awesome. The level is excellently crafted with fine details throughout. The game play elements are challenging, unique and fun. I didn't even mind dying a 100 times. The dialogue is humorous and the special effects just marvellous. Outstanding work.

The game play in this was sooo good.I loved every section. There is so much varied game play that nothing seemed repetitive. I loved all the humor through out the level(s) especially the little chase scene where the storm troopers are chasing the others back n forth. I love how you put in the tiniest of details and if I listed them all it would fill up several pages. Awesome series and I look forward to what you cook up next.

Whoever is in charge of pushing the MM Pick button should be fired. This should already have a pink ribbon around it.

I spotted you publishing the locked versions, and queued them anyway, then they somehow disapperared and I lost track of what was happening.
Queued again now, I bet it will be awesome hands down, fairy hands down

When you gotta go, you gotta go. Less than a third of players claw their way through to the last level anyway, and that's through level link problems, bugs (which I'm sure I've pretty much vanquished now), difficulty issues or boredom ( and now I'll add Psy to the list) - take your pick lol. Getting some really great comments on it though, so ima happy .2011-10-06 17:20:00

I played through this on Saturday and it was awesome!

It's got all the fun and humor I've come to expect from this series all wrapped up in a beautifully designed visual extravaganza. The camera work is perfect and the way you have shot for shot matches to the movie was impressive. Besides the jokes, sets, brilliant gameplay and blaster effects the thing that most stood out for me was all the tiny details you packed in. Stuff most creators wouldn't even bother with, such as jumping from the docking bay to the left at the very beginning you altered the gravity and change music, when you grab the tractor beam handles after shutting it down it makes the party horn noise, and a few others that put an extra smile on my face as I discovered them. I love that sort of easter egg stuff in levels.

So I'll stand by what I said on lbp.me - perfection Keep 'em coming!

Played it this weekend and loved it. Various and creative gameplay, fun cutscenes, and a great attention to details. This was difficult but never frustrating, everything was close to perfection. I've only one precise complain : The jump on bouncepad at the beginning of part 2 was difficult, and saddly I've lost all my lives here, forcing me to restart from the beginning. But that's a really minor thing and everyone should give this level a try, it's worth the play.2011-10-10 10:19:00

Thanks guys. You mention details Morgana, credit where it's due, that little trip out the hangar was Mr Fusions idea in playtesting, so I've him to thanks for that. My favourite little egg is Leias scrawlings in her cell, dunno if anyones noticed the chalk sack - with buns : ).

Slurm, I''ve added a spawn point at the tractor beam, no idea how it went so wrong for you there, but no matter, that restart issue wont happen anymore.

Lol, send the cheque to the usual address. I should say that any input I had was so minimal and all ideas I had came about because this level got my imagination jumping in a way that few things do. The stage is so full and polished it was just exciting to get into the first elevator.

The most amazing thing was how 'ready' it was weeks (months) ago. Playing some different versions of the rooms, as well as seeing some concept stuff was a big learning experience. Seeing the obsession for excellence firsthand was quite a sight to behold.

Its a little bit of a let down to learn people don't get to the end, the intro to PT3 is ridiculously good.

SKIPPABLE CUT SCENES!
(Not that anyone would skip these ones!)

+ Going to the left.
I would let the sound effect play all the way through, but still, awesome.
Plus how you handled the other music/sound effect there was perfect.

+ That is how you make a controllinator section.

+ Everything else.
(That close up of Han running with the tilted camera angle was amazing! (before the fart))

Wait, is Leia holding onto me? While I grapple? With seemless AI co-op gameplay while on the run?
http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/la.gif

I don't say wow often, but wow. Definitely one of the best levels I have played. Thanks!
How hard was this to make? I can't even imagine with all the sackbots and such...

Awesome series of levels m8, they had lashings of detail and the gameplay was superb! I loved the cut scenes, hilarious lol. You are the best creator when it comes to Starwars, without a doubt this should be Mm picked! Are you gonna be doing anymore? I've built a few flat Starwars models if ya want em, check my new Starwars move level to see what I mean. Message me on PSN if you're interested m8. Excellent series , keep up the good work. SKIPPABLE CUT SCENES!

Ha. Yes. After that thread a few weeks back that must have come as a surprise. Basketsnake commented that maybe I had put too many in for some (and he's probably right), so I just bit the bullet and shoehorned a bit of logic in as a compromise. I knew there were going to be at least 3 people here that would appreciate it. ; )

How hard was this to make? I can't even imagine with all the sackbots and such...

The sackbot stuff was definitely the trickiest to get working right, just endless trial and error to take into account they never seemed to do what you'd think they'd naturally do. I had to build in some weird layer changing in the Leia Conveyor because if you're holding a sackbot in one layer, you don't autochange to front/middle if you drop down to one. The co-op bounce pads ended up with a global gravity trigger on them to make sure the bot doesn't randomly jump and miss the pad kicking in. Its daft stuff you don't even think about when building for a player, but needs working round with bots. it wasn't too much hard work, just a lot of fiddling about.

Hey brucie, I'm on a create break now but I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the offer & your comments, appreciated. Played your stuff, its great!

'Scuse the bump, I've had a fair few comments and PMs ingame about giveaways, particularly the whizzy little Mouse Droid, so I've updated the level with a few prizes (the Droid and some extra bits & pieces). Someone commented it would make for a great racing level, but I won't be doing anything new in the next few months, so if anyone wants to get their hands on it and run with it, be my guest!2011-11-25 11:21:00
