SpaceOpera - SPOTLIGHTED - PICS

Archive: 31 posts

Hi,

It is done, I finally published my last level.

Level: SpaceOpera
Creator: Takelow
Location: near France
Type: Contemplative level
Multiplayer: No. The entire level was designed for ONE PLAYER ONLY.

Overall description:
In this level, your sackboy had been called by the government to participate to the LEWIS program. LEWIS mean ?Lbp Expension into the Whole Interstellar Universe?.
After a short test in order to verify you are the good guy, your mission will be to travel on different planets and promote LBP.

I constructed this level mainly as a contemplative one and I think it may divide players from this point of view. The level is more for the eyes than for the challenge.
There is a lot of custom content and some little surprises in it!

SOME MEMBERS COMMENTS :

When it comes to high quality levels there are usually 1 or 2 moments that make you say wow. In this level there were 5-6 moments that made me say "WOW!". From the opening logo, to the 4 spaceships (...) to the asteroid field, to the different aliens, to the boss (...) to my favorite moment of all: ET!!! I have to say, you are a genius! This moment was so magical. The music stopped, the famous scene from the movie kicks in and then those familiar opening piano notes. WOW WOW WOW WOW. You made a father feel like a child again. THANK YOU!!!

TaKeLoW, for me, this level is your best !
I played yesterday and since then I have stars in my eyes.

Then, you can now wear your cosmonaut suit, take a look to the level and, if you want, come back to leave some comment

Okay so I just finished this and have the number one score Here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- When it comes to high quality levels there are usually 1 or 2 moments that make you say wow. In this level there were 5-6 moments that made me say "WOW!". From the opening logo, to the 4 spaceships (that's right everyone, the man made FOUR spaceships) to the asteroid field, to the different aliens, to the boss (I don't want to spoil it but let's just say it should be familiar to everyone) to my favorite moment of all: ET!!! I have to say, you are a genius! This moment was so magical. The music stopped, the famous scene from the movie kicks in and then those familiar opening piano notes. WOW WOW WOW WOW. You made a father feel like a child again. THANK YOU!!!

- Custom content. Once again you have created a staggering amount of custom things for your level. I think you are worthy of the title "The Custom Master" lol.

- Varied gameplay. You are never doing the same thing twice and my favorite moment was flying through the asteroid field, amazing job designing that!

- The lighting. Man, this seems to be your specialty. No creator that I know of has mastered the use of lighting that way that you have. All of your levels have shown me what is possible when lighting is used effectively and for this I thank you.

- Music that works and fits the story.

- The story is lighthearted but works perfectly. I love the concept of travelling throughout the universe and spreading the word about LBP, very cool.

Suggestions:

- At the beginning during the decontamination the point bubbles released are infinite. Please set a limit and make the "Radiation Floatys" disappear as well once the door has dissolved.

- It is possible to jump down to the right of the first spaceship and access a part of the level that was never meant to be accessed lol. Please fix. It is also possible to jump down to the left and get a prize bubble in the hidden area. If the player does this then they are forced to suicide because the wall is blocking the way. But the last checkpoint if before the elevator which has already gone up and does not come back down which means the player is forced to restart!. So, invert the elevator and make it impossible to access the special area without the required ball of sponge.

- I could not figure out the use for the ball of sponge next to the first spaceship. Maybe I was doing something wrong?

- Your proximity switches are visible (maybe this is intentional?) and there is visible dark matter in a couple of sections.

- Please make the length of the first jetpack (right after the rocket ship ride, next to the satellite) longer. It is very tedious trying to land the jump with so little length on the tether.

5 stars and HEARTED! I want you to know that I have now hearted 4 of your levels (and you as a creator) officially making you my most hearted creator! You are one of my top 3 favorite creators in LBP and I am anxious to see what you will be able to come up with using the new Paintinator! You have a very unique style that is all your own and this has won my deep admiration and respect. I am surprised more people from these forums have not responded to your threads but I can tell them that they are missing out if they don't check out your levels. Simply amazing work, I look forward to the next one. Merry Christmas, Joyeaux Noel!

Thank you all for your comments!

OCK, you made an extensive review of one of my level AGAIN and i thank you A LOT for this! I must admit that i'm very proud that the "The Legion" and "Out of Africa" creator, i mean you, OCK, played and loved this level.

...to my favorite moment of all: ET!!! I have to say, you are a genius! This moment was so magical. The music stopped, the famous scene from the movie kicks in and then those familiar opening piano notes. WOW WOW WOW WOW. You made a father feel like a child again. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you. Actually, i had this idea in my bed during a night (who says LBP addict???). I'm a father to, and i constructed this scene as a little Christmas gift for players!

I think you are worthy of the title "The Custom Master" lol.

LOl, thank you. Perhaps may i change my username for this
I will keep Takelow sometimes more...

The lighting. Man, this seems to be your specialty. No creator that I know of has mastered the use of lighting that way that you have. All of your levels have shown me what is possible when lighting is used effectively and for this I thank you.

It is true that this level is full of lighting. I think that lighting add great visual value to a level. And when i construct my levels, i ALWAYS test things with lightings. And there is incredible things that could be done with these in LBP!

The story is lighthearted but works perfectly

It is the way it was supposed to be. As say above, it's a sort of Christmas level. So i choose a lighthearted story. I was impatient to have feedbacks on this point because i thought it is double edged. I'm happy that you liked it

- At the beginning during the decontamination the point bubbles released are infinite. Please set a limit and make the "Radiation Floatys" disappear as well once the door has dissolved.

I know this but i had a strange bug in this area. Bubbles didn't released at all when i set a limit. I am perhaps doing sonething wrong here. Do uou have an idea that what could happen here?
Concerning the "Radiation floatys", you right. I don't know how to do this for now, but it is a good suggest and i will try to update this.

Oh, i will see that. I tried to design the spaceship in order to avoid such thing. There is normally a metal wall that appear at the lef side of the spaceship once you enter it. I though it was sufficient but apparently it is not.
Nevertheless, i will take a look and update this section. Thank you OCK.

I could not figure out the use for the ball of sponge next to the first spaceship. Maybe I was doing something wrong?.

No.
Actually, I was doing something wrong. I pobably forgot to connect an action mechanism here...

- Your proximity switches are visible (maybe this is intentional?) and there is visible dark matter in a couple of sections.

It is possible i forget to turn invisible some of the switch i used. I will see that, and check for dark matter.

- Please make the length of the first jetpack (right after the rocket ship ride, next to the satellite) longer. It is very tedious trying to land the jump with so little length on the tether.

Of course dear OCK! I will do that in the next udpadate, thank you

5 stars and HEARTED!

How proud i'm for this.

I'm very proud and glad to read such a thing coming from you OCK. I can tell you that i think the same thing from you. You know how i loved your work and that "The LEGION" is probably the best LBP level i played so far (if you don't play it, run, run, fly...).
It is also very important for me to read that you find i add a unique style in my creation. I always kept this idea in mind when i created my levels. I'm quite obsessed with this idea. And it is wonderfull that you highlithed this point. Thank you A LOT for your extensive review and Happy Holidays OCK

the levels good

Thank you. Don't you have any suggestions to improve it?

Second on the scoreboard woo
Great!
Must i understand in your "woo" that you loved the level?

I would like to add here that i have currently a problem in LBP. My save is corrupted and the game won't start. I must delete my actual save and instal a backup save. I don't know when i will find the time to do this (Christmas time, Holidays with my son...), but during this time i will not be able to do updates of my levels taking in account yours suggests. I will edit this post when it will be done (i hope very soon however).

What a surprise !!!!
TaKeLoW, for me, this level is your best !
I played yesterday and since then I have stars in my eyes.
Why this level is your best ?
First, and it's the most important to me: the script. The changing character through the intergalactic design is flexible, full of twists and surprise.
I do not want to spoil it because the pleasure is in the surprises that you knew distilled in the universe.
Second, as usally, the management of the light is perfect. I think that without this specificity, the atmosphere of your level design would become fade.
Last, i totaly agree with OCK: change your pseudo for "The Custom Master". The spaceships are impressives !!!!

BE CAREFUL MY FRIENDS, this level is Extremely Transgressive

5 stars and HEARTED !!!!!

Wow Takelow, you are a level creating beast! I don't know how you manage to produce so many, so quickly, with such fun ideas!

I really enjoyed Space Opera. Ock mentioned all of my criticisms, so I'll just lavish you with a bit of praise! I loved your lighting of the level, it went well with your space theme. I thought your custom objects were well done and I enjoyed the many different space vehicles that transported me throughout the level. Small atmospheric touches, like the comets, the eclipse, and the rockets engines firing one at a time really added to the level. I also laughed out loud when I saw who makes an appearance as the boss! Oh, actually, if I had one other critique, it might be to add more movement to the boss's body. I loved the tail action, but he was rather static.

Solid, creative, and fun level!

Answer to emitter bug
****************************************

The way this happens is a strange quirk with emitters:

If you put an emitter on the level and set a limit, and then drop into the level during create mode (thus throwing the switch controlling the emitter and the objects are emitted), the emitter will reach the limit and never again emit, even during play mode (there is nothing to alert you in create mode of how many objects have been emitted).

Try taking out the emitter, putting it back in again with a limit, and going into Play mode and trying it out. It should work.

I really enjoyed this level. It had a great look, nice story, and the part where you fly through the meteor storm ROCKED.

Pros:

+ Great stylized look
+ Metor section was fantastic and had a nice "vertigo" feel.
+ Nice story
+ Well thought out game mechanics

Cons:

- Would be a little more polished during the text parts if I didn't have to close each word bubble, walk a tiny bit to have another one open, and have to close it again (you can activate a group of them at a time in order by using switches). (I had to think of SOMETHING for a con, and this was the best I could do).
- Endless emitter at the beginning - see my comment above to fix.
- End boss was a little easy for my taste

Good job!

+ The intro is well done, introducing you to the story as you advance.
+ The spaceship was really well designed!
+ That alien boss was cool!
+ Great lightning effects. You give me some ideas for my next level!

- Endless emitter, like the others mentionned.
- Some places are a bit are a bit too "wait and see what happens" for my taste, but since you mentioned it's a "Contemplative level" directly in your level description, I have nothing else to say.

If you have some time, I would like to have your feedback on my level :

LOL...
I loved the secret code in your sentence!

Wow Takelow, you are a level creating beast! I don't know how you manage to produce so many, so quickly, with such fun ideas!

Thank you. Actually, i had a lot of free time these three last month. And when i have something in mind, it is quite obsessional. How many ideas i had in my bed and my bath!!!!
Unfotunately, my wife is a little bit less enthousiastic than you about this question...:hero:

]Oh, actually, if I had one other critique, it might be to add more movement to the boss's body. I loved the tail action, but he was rather static.

You right and i completely agree. It was my initial thought to construct him with movement. Actually, my thermo is TOTALLY full and i cannot add any mechanism without an overall remodelling of the level. However, it is the first boss in all my level and i learned a lot with it. My next bosses will be animated, for sure!!

No, you right here. Actually, when i created this level, i didn't knew that speech bubble could be connected to switches. It is the only reason of this "choice".

- End boss was a little easy for my taste

I also agree here. Same comments as to mrsupercomputer

Hey Takelow, I played your level last night and here is what I thought:

Pros:
The outer space areas were well done and I liked all the lighting effects.

The meteor shower area in particular was great.

I liked visiting the different planets and telling them about LBP.

The spacecrafts looked very good.

I like the last group of enemy aliens. Reminded me of the movie Alien (which I like alot).

Cons:
The test area was nowhere near as beautiful as the outer space area. I would show them something that looks real spectacular to keep them in the level close to the beggining.

The planet with the aliens, If you walk down around the planet to the right you can see its just a half planet sitting on another slab of material. I know most people don't go in this area but I am being picky since I didn't find much else that could be improved.

Get rid of the pistons driving the spacecrafts if possible. Not sure how easy that may be though.

I look forward to playing your other levels soon.

If i understand well, you think that the test area is far less beautiful that the outer space area, isn't it?
If yes, actually, it is a personnal wish. I would like a very neutral begining of my level. Since the major part is in outer space, the beginning take place in the N/SA buildings and I choose a neutral background in order to contrast. It's a personnal artistic choice.

The planet with the aliens, If you walk down around the planet to the right you can see its just a half planet sitting on another slab of material. I know most people don't go in this area but I am being picky since I didn't find much else that could be improved.

Oh, thank you a lot, i didn't noticed that! I will fix this in my next update.

Lol

Actually, i have not create all my levels after i registered the forum. Actually, Color of Sound, The Quest of the Great Pyramid, Way of light and Attraction: Wheel of Richness were done before i register. I just made some updates taking in account suggests of forum mebers. And i didn't find the time to enter all the correction i would like (my last project, "The Bearer", [see albums in my profile], take all my playtime actually).
Nevertheless, i only created SpacOpera and my two incoming levels since i registered.

However, i must admit that i am quite an obsessed man (when i love something, i do it ALL THE TIME...) and moreover, i had a lot of free time before this new year.
It will not be the case anymore... even if i regret it...

IBy the way, thank you for playing my level

great level 5 stars and hearted but some issues...

check your spelling and grammer on the magic mouths, there are mistakes.
increase the radius of the sensor switch in the radiation room.
after leaving the first planet (the 1 that looks like a moon ) i got the jetpack but there is a blue light that looks like gas as its the same colour of the gas around it, and you must pass through it to continue the level but since it looks like gas... you get my drift

overall 2 many good features to list!!! well done

try my level series: silent hill 2 REBORN ( part 1 and part 2 ) and tell me if its worth making more parts

Wow, man. I wish I had played this sooner. This is one of the most enjoyable and heartwarming experiences I've had since I first started story mode back on release day.

The sterile look of the starting environment was cool... this area is a little chunky in ways, but sets the stage perfectly, and the decontamination segment was awesome. Very well done. This felt like a Kubrik film right here. That moon sticker/spotlight on the wall was an amazing idea - must have taken forever to get that in just the right spot.

I love this storyline, and I feel happy to go around the universe promoting LBP. MM should give you an award for a level like this lol all the alien races are very well designed and seem like cool people

The rocket ship... in fact, all the vehicles are absolutely awesome. They are mechanically sound, perfectly detailed, but still fun to look at and not overly complex. That was a highlight of the level - the asteroid field is jaw droppingly cool. Floating around in space was taken to a new level here.

The rotating planet section was awesome - you managed to sneak in some really well implemented platforming in a visually beautiful level. The lighting and gas effects you have here are phenomenal. It's safe to say you're the master of lighting and effects on these boards.

...the E.T. part literally gave me goosebumps. That was the most magical moment I've ever had in LBP - bar none. Thanks for that great feeling it gave me lol - what a wonderful way to mix in light hearted alien stuff with an homage to the original happy alien!

The eclipse was insane! If you could just hide the long piece, by making it into a skinny invisible piece of rubber instead of being noticable it would be even better. You are such a creative person.

...that boss is one of the coolest looking things I've seen in the game too. The moving tendrils were ridiculous... such great mechanics. If only you could make the whole thing move. I like the Alien homage there too.

There are a few small details that I think you could improve - like the gaps between stuff in the 1st area, and hide stuff a little more (the asteroid field's background, some of the pistons could be set to 0 if possible), but there is nothing really wrong with this level. It's 100% original and creative. I hearted this, and will definitely show it off to people.

Hi,

First of all, thanks for the great feedbacks.

check your spelling and grammer on the magic mouths, there are mistakes.

Thank you. I know that it is a problem in all my levels. I actually am french and my english is far from perfect... I will correct this errors as soon as possible

try my level series: silent hill 2 REBORN ( part 1 and part 2 ) and tell me if its worth making more parts

It's done and and i wrote detailed feedbacks

Wow, man. I wish I had played this sooner. This is one of the most enjoyable and heartwarming experiences I've had since I first started story mode back on release day.

Thank you a lot! This kind of comments are of great value when coming from creators as talenting as you

This felt like a Kubrik film right here.
This is the biggest compliment i can receive!
I am an absolute fan of Kubrick universe. And yes, it was definitely a source of inspiration for me in this level. Thank you A LOT!!!

Unfortunately, i can't. My thermometer would definitely not let me doing such a beautiful thing

the asteroid field's background, some of the pistons could be set to 0 if possible

Actually, there is not any piston in the asteroid field!!!
But how it is do??? Lol

Hey takelow... I've finally played your level again, so here are my thoughts
It's not much feedback, though.

1) Just the whole intro, before you get into space is awesome :hero: (yeah just awesome)

2) The Space shuttle thing in wich you travel to enter space is really well designed, and i liked how the rockets didn't turn on at the same time... (if you know what i mean)

3) Ok so I came at the "greenling planet" No problem there but when i grabbed the jetpack to fly to the right, to enter the "gas tunnel" i saw a kind of a problem...
When you leave the gas tunnel you can fly above the purple gas blob and there you see a huge light, and it just looks uggly. :/

4) The E.T. kinda part was really cool

5) And i loved the Part where you have to jump over the egg... ( how did you make this up? o_O)

6) The part where you enter the giant spaceship to fight the boss. The part with the green lights on the wall.... The problem here is that you can see proximity switches :/ It doesn't look good imo

7) Ok and now i'm gonna say something you might not like, but I'm gonna say it anyway.
The boss part didn't really feel like a boss fight to me: The only thing you had to do is jump on the brains... wich was what i thought really easy.

Although I have to say that it's REALLY well designed, it just looks AWESOME (does that cheer you up, maybe )

8) And then the ending...hmm
The scoreboard was like, well... really bad placed. Maybe you could have thought of a better ending.

Anyway i liked the story and overall look of the level. And i gave it 5 stars, but i'm not sure if i hearted it. And if not i will do this shortly.

That's it

Hi Yarbone,

Thank you for your great feedbacks, i really appreciate it

Hm... I must check this...
Thank you.

And i loved the Part where you have to jump over the egg... ( how did you make this up? o_O)

It was not difficult to construct it. Actually, it is empty and there is only a green light in it. Green smoke and spotlights gave the surrounding ambiance.

You MUST say it!
I know that my boss is a little bit easy to kill. Actually, it is more a "final touch" than a boos by itself.

And then the ending...hmm
The scoreboard was like, well... really bad placed. Maybe you could have thought of a better ending.

Yeah... i must admit that creativity juice was gone for the ending...
I will try to do something for this if i find the time
