This video posted by Playstation is filled with numerous PS game references and mystery...oh and a date.

Resistance 4?

I'm betting on that.

Or at least another dark FPS.

I'll assume that is the case so I am not disappoint, son.

Unless it's a smash Bros- esque crossover.

Then we can see Kratos yell incomprehensible rage at Sackboy and mutilate him for no real reason.

PS Heroes with MOAR heroes! (Spyro, Kratos, Sly, Crash, Jak, Drake, Sackboy, Snake and all that stuff VS chimeras, mercenaries, Ocelot, the Negativitron and all that stuff)
AND coop gameplay.

PS:The above post is purely speculation. If you haven't noticed that yet, please head to the closest supermarket and buy a "brain" for yourself. They're under the "body parts" category.

Realisticly there's not much chance of Sony actually managing to keep it a secret until then.

Hopefully this isn't about the stuff they're changing in Home. I really couldn't care less about Home.
If it is some sort of crossover it would be great!
It may be the announcing of the Vita's new release date. (Unless they've already said what that is)

That said, I hope this isn't just an ad campaign for upcoming games... Like you can see the Twisted Metal car, advertising Twisted Metal. You can see Lightnings sword from FFXIII advertising FFXIII-2. You can see an Auger from Resistance for the recently released game... I unno, I guess it doesn't make complete sense, but I'm just saying it MAY be their holiday ad campaign... hopefully they're not stupid enough to put this much hype into an ad campaign. If they do, Sony deserves the ****storm they'd get >_>

I'm going to quote a couple of helpful comments posted on the video in the last fifteen minutes in case they move down.

References:

Resistance - Soldiers and some weapons on the wall

Twisted Metal - Sweetooth van before the soldiers walk into the INN

Parappa the Rappa - Calender behind the woman

Ratchet and Clank - Ratchets wrench on the wall

MGS4 - MK2 behind the dogs.

Killzone - Weapons on the wall

Little BIg planet - blue orb in the dish

Final Fantasy XIII - Lightning Gunblade in the guns

God of War - At the end of the trailer when the date appears, a man moves in the background, Its Kratos.

Speculation

It's a metaphor. All of the stuff in the beginning is from previous PlayStation games. Putting the equipment on the rack and going into the door represents leaving this gen and entering the next gen.

It's looking like a new console announcement

Four more days till we discover what the heck this is. Or three and a half. Whatever.

But if Sony did this for the Home update (which we already knew about) or for some sales push... they deserve the hate they'll get. You bet they will. :kz:

So yeah, I'm counting on crossover game. If it is not, or if it is not worth such hype and is in fact quite stupid, then nobody say people shouldn't be upset at Sony, k? CAUSE THEY SHOULD.

or reveal in more detail about insominac stop being playstation exclusives and now moved to EA for multi format

Insomniac just got bigger and decided to try for more money doing a multiformat game, they're an independent developer so they're free to choose what they work on.

The only involvement EA has is acting as publisher as part of its partners program by doing this Insomniac is able to retain the ownership of its new IP.

Someone on youtube said it could be cross-game chat. It matches the context of the video and would probably merit a teaser as the feature has been requested for years.

However, Sony did say a few months ago that it couldn't be done due to insufficient RAM.

Not really bothered about it anyway.

It is something that is nescessary for the PS4, if it isn't possible on the PS3 though. I hate playing on my PS3 because I need my Xbox online so I can actually talk to people while I'm playing single player or whatever. Not having party chat is a major flaw in the PS3's design.

If the PS3 can run games with photo-realistic shaders, dynamic lighting, high-poly models with fluid skeletal animation covered in high resolution textures and normal maps, I'm pretty sure they can run VOIP. These things are mostly rendered from the GPU, but they also require RAM. VOIP would have to be hosted on Sony's side, on the servers, in order for players to transmit/receive audio data. The client-side portion of VOIP would be a tiny program taking very little-to-no RAM. Besides, doesn't the PS3 supposedly have higher specs than the Xbox 360?

maybe some kind of vita cross play....
cross game chat.....
a new mmo like home but with actual gameplay....
maybe, as they all seem fairly old games, its graphic snazzified versions.....
maybe cross game split screen (jk).....
maybe download versions of those games (they're going into the network)......
maybe I need to stop typing.....

With the RAM in the PS3 there's so much used by it's operating system and the rest is for the games and with the games using all the resources available Sony can't free up the RAM needed for cross game chat.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 have similar RAM specifications, yet the PS3's streamlined menu system (see your PS Button) is extremely simplistic, so it wouldn't take much memory. It still shouldn't take much to run cross-game chat on a local basis, and unless I'm missing something here it shouldn't be that difficult to implement.

PSN lacks the bandwidth needed to support proper VOIP, it's not really so much a RAM issue. Back before the first Xbox launched, MS dumped a buttload of cash into a series of data centers all over the world connected by high speed fiber optic lines...the exact numbers are not known, but I've heard XBL's server count is second only to Blizzard's, which is huge. Like an MMO, you always get a good connection because you're dialing into a location somewhat close to you...that's why XBL is always so fast....and also why you have to pay for it

PSN by comparison is quite small, so bandwidth-wise, might not be able to handle all that data. I'm curious to see how they're going to do it with the Vita.

If the PS os takes up less memory the memory saved will be part of the space assigned to running games not something thats left doing nothing.

But unlike Sony, MS have made Xbox Live a focus of the console. It was designed with this kind of thin in mind. As far as I am aware the PS3 doesn'te ven have a private chat function (by which I mean 2 people in a chat talking to each other while on separate games) - let alone the 8 person party chat that Xbox Live gives. To be honest, that alone is worth the money to me. You don't really think about it when you don't have it, but I couldn't go back to Xbox Live pre-party chat. Sure, sometimes you only want to chat to one or two people, but having the option of 8 people is fantastic. You don't know what you are missing 'til you've tried it

Oh trust me... I know.

My overall point was that it's more likely to be a serverside issue than a clientside one. I'm not from Sony though... so don't quote me on that.

Except that it IS a client based issue, not a server one.

Basically, running cross chat would require RAM. The reason Xbox has it is because it was planned from the start, so part of the 360's RAM has always been allocated to that feature- aka, no developer has ever been able to use that RAM

The PS3 has had no such limitation, so there is no excess RAM to take from the developrs for this feature. You can't just magically add RAM to a machine. All RAM is now accouned for, and adding another parrallel proces would take away from the developers, and potentailly break high RAM games. Also, it's not so easy to recode an entire feature to work on top of hundreds of games without breaking any... It was difficult enough to add in in-gameXMB, and that was during the early days of the PS3 when there weren't as many games to potnetially break, and even still there's like 7 or 13 old games that don't have ingame XMb and are instead like the PS1 games.

Also, doesn't the Vita have cross game chat? So the argument of Sony's servers not being up to the task would be out the window.

It's the RAM on the PS3 we know this because after years of asking we finally got an answer a few weeks ago.

Cross-game voice chat is not possible on the PlayStation 3 because of memory restrictions, Sony has revealed.
The PS3's RAM is gobbled up by the games it runs, which prevents the much-desired feature from being implemented, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer.
"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."
As revealed by Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-18-sony-why-ps-vita-has-512mb-of-ram) yesterday, PS Vita, due out in Europe early next year, actually has more RAM than the PS3.
Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PS3's 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. This enables features such as cross-game voice chat to run in the background while games are being played.
On the PS3, however, things are different.
"The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."
So, voice chat is better on Vita than PS3?
"We totally agree!" Yoshida replied.

It has similar RAM specifications as the Xbox, its menu system is incredibly simple, and it runs the same games as the Xbox, yet it still can't support cross-game chat? It's either inefficient or I've misjudged the PS3's RAM.

I guess the PS3 simply needs more RAM.

ONCE AGAIN, they didn't just keep RAM locked out from developers. Whatever wasn't required to run the system was given to the developers for their own gamess. Games on the 360 never got said RAM because it was restricted to said feature from the start. Sony can't just take away RAM from the developer and break games that use the current RAM limits thsat easily >_> And it wouldn't be like the 360 has excess RAM they've been holding out from the developers on the off chance they want to rewrite the code overlining every game, right?

I guess the PS3 simply needs more RAM.

Lets try this again.

Both have something like 512 mb of RAM.

Lets just say the xbox os takes 60mb and the rest is used for games and the ps3 os takes 50 mb and the rest is used for games. The hypothetical 10mb of ram less for the os doesn't just sit unused it gets assigned for game use.

Sony can't put in cross game chat now because they can't give anymore RAM to the os because it would potentially break every game on the system.

It's a feature that would have been easy to implement if it was built in from the start but now the only way would be to reduce the size of the existing os to give enough space and at this point in the life cycle it's probably not worth the effort.

Exactly. They could reduce the size of the OS, they could add in cross-game chat. You're right, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort, and the compromises they would have to make would probably significantly cripple the OS, but it could be done.

I know how RAM works, you don't need to waste your time explaining it to me. My point is just because there's, say, 512 MB of RAM, does not mean that all of that is being utilized at all times. If the system ever ran out of RAM it would probably crash, like most other things that suffer memory leaks and the like. If a separate voice chat client were to run parallel with a game, it may or may not break it, depending on the RAM requirements of said game.

I see. So a price drop. ... That price drop is new, right?

Well, Sony wasted a lot of money for something stupid... I think. And made people angry. Ithink. Ah well. Peanuts.

It's only for future releases (and Resistance 3).

I think it's a Helghast.
The Online Pass is a load of crap. One more way they found out to get money from their clients. As if the current price for a game and it coming fractured with DLC's weren't enough. I'm growing tired of Sony's BS. The one reason that prevents me from selling my PS3 and getting an Xbox or a decent desktop are exclusives like LBP, Uncharted and Ratchet, and trust me when I say even those games won't be reason enough if this goes on. Ever since the PS3's sales started to get balanced out with the competition's Sony started to regain its former arrogance. I really hope the PS4's sales and credibility start out worse than the PS3's had, it's time they suffered another lesson in humility.

So a bunch of our most iconic heroes came together, about to meet in one room, people anticipated, ready to do what we've all waited for..........celebrate some gamer we've never heard of and lower prices.

So wait, when they say "Long live play", is Sony trying to make us cheer up even though for a second it looked like they were gonna reveal something amazing, or are they raising prices along with this PSN Pass just to make matters worse?2011-10-05 16:14:00

I don't know about you guys, but seeing Lightning from FFXIII in the real world made me giddy. That, and the little Sackboy playing chess was adorable.

Oh right, the PSN pass thing... Well, I think I wouldn't mind it so much if PSN was actually worth paying for. Its lack of features make it not worth doling out the extra $10 for every single game. I shouldn't have to pick and choose what games I want to play online, it should be one flat fee with which I can play all of my games online, and said fee should only be incurred upon a massive PSN update adding at least a dozen new features, most of which would not be possible at this point. Before charging anyone, they should add cross game chat, nicer menus, and playing your own music in any game, to name a few.

For those that don't understand, Michael is the "gamer" (ie. all of us). The video is a celebration of gaming and gamers and I think it's quite brilliant. We have multiplatform characters in the vid (Ezio, Little Sister etc) because Sony is acknowledging the industry as a whole while still pushing the Playstation brand and their new Long.Live.Play slogan. Thought the production values were incredible and Sony showed a tremendous amount of respect for the industry while at the same time marketing the PS3. Long live Sony, long live the PS3

EDIT: just noticed Paul Phoenix at 1:23

Sony's "get excited, we have a surprise for you" never leads to something something substantial. Ever. When they truly have something we'd expect being revealed by an epic video like this, they either do it casually or the info gets leaked prematurely.

Wait, as if it wasn't enough having to buy passes for used games, now we have to buy passes for NEW games too???
Can someone explain me this? Do these passes come with new games free of charge? And do they unlock the game for all the accounts in a PS3? If the answer to one of these questions is "no", then I am more than dissapoint.

While we're on the subject of passes here's a rare glimpse of how well passes are doing for EA.

"The revenues we derive from that haven't been dramatic. I'd say they're in the $10-$15 million range since we initiated the program," he said. While the sales are not "dramatic" in volume, he pointed out that it is all "found revenue" that comes from users who previously "consumed bandwidth for free."http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/37089/EA_Details_Strong_Digital_Growth_Sims_Social_Numbe rs.php

Oh, to experience the joy when making an additional $15 million receives a "meh, it's alright" response. lol I can understand them being a big company, but it's still 15 million you didn't have before. You could at least try to fake a little enthusiasm.

If the online pass code is already on your PS3 you won't have to pay anything like he has not to pay to play the PSN games or the DLCs.

Also, I totally favour the Pass.
Gamestop and co have f'ed the developers so much with the second buy market.
It's not as you sell something directly to a friend.
It's gamestop (or any other store) buying for very cheap a product, reselling it at a high price without paying royalties to software houses that, in the case of multiplayer games, pay the services for 2 gamers.
Totally not fair.
And we users have to pay a bit more, but we never complained when we buought used games...
I invite you all to look at the situation with a bit of maturity.
I can't absolutely blame Sony, EA, THQ or Activision.
They're trying to keep their business healthy while others, like Gamestop are f'ing them.

Then they could find a way to f Gamestop in return instead of f'ing the customers. Now what if I want to borrow a game to a friend? What if my PS3 dies? And meanwhile, Gamestop still buys used games for low prices and sell for high. The used game sales will probably get slightly hampered and maybe GAME and Gamestop will lower their used game prices to compensate, but there won't be much difference for them.

I'm telling you ΩSlayer, a time will come when we'll have to pay if we want a game to work in more than one console. The videogame industry is becoming more elitist than golf.

It's a business, they couldn't care less about their customers. It's all about making a profit. If you give up on the PS3, so what? You'll be replaced soon enough. It's not about stopping used game sales, it's about making a profit off of it.

If you care about your business, it's kind of a necessity caring about your customers' satisfaction as well. Sony should have learnt that by now. Ignore your customer's interests for too long, and they are the ones that'll replace you, not the opposite. Might take a while longer if a big amount of your clients is too thick to realize their interests are being neglected, but it'll happen sooner or later.

The pass is tied to the your PSN ID and every console that ID is on.
Then, software house already tried to set an agreement with gamestop and co, but the sellers refused it (it'a story from at least 2 years ago)
More than that, blame Microsoft, since they introduced LIVE and the DLCs on consoles, not Sony.

I don't like it, it's not pleasing, but I at least understand it.

A friend of mine tested the online pass. He used it on his main PS3 for Resistance 3. Then he went onto the PS3 we use for our radio show and signed in. He just downloaded the pass again, from his download list, and was able to play on his account on the other PS3. He then got on the other account on that PS3, and was able to play online as well.

I'm not really sure how you "de-railed" this thread. Maybe I don't understand the definition of de-railing a thread completely, but it started out as a teaser video, people told their thoughts, then it was revealed. More thoughts came, others taking about PSN Pass, etc. You've pointed out a snip it in the new ad which the thread is about, put an opinion about the PSN Pass, since we happen to be talking about Sony, and link the Uncharted 3 beta news, which I found quite helpful.

Like I said though, mybe I don't fully get the definition of de-rail, but maybe the thread name should be changed to "Thoughts about PSN Pass and New Sony Ad"? Anyway though, I'm no expert with all these guys, but I can try whipping up a list of characters I happen to find in there.

EDIT: Sorry if it's not the most organized and all, but here it is.

Some guys, not sure, but they're from beginning and then later on too.

00:48 Nathan Drake, referencing a scene from UC3
00:48 Lightning, from Final Fantasy X-lll, sitting by Nathan Drake

00:57 Cole, from Infamous series, although he is shown as the Infamous 2 version. You can see him talking in the background when Nathan's there, but he is shown mainly at this time.
00:57 Not ever shown mainly, but in the background, behind Cole, it looks to be Helghast

1:00 Isaac, from the Dead Space series, standing with arms on table
1:00 Looks to be Ghost from Modern Warfare 2 sitting down, with some Bald dude, maybe that guy from the Hitman series?
1:04 Closing in on Snake, some baseball dude in the way at first
(1:14: Chell in background passing through blue portal holding portal gun, thanks SnipySev for pointing that out ^^)
1:16 closing in on some clown dude with hair on fire, again showing hitman and Ghost, in the way at first when closing in. He could be seen earlier when Isaac, Hitman Dude and Ghost were there mainly.

1:17 Sackboy shown as Sackboy doll moving a sand-colored chess piece forward.
1:19 Athena and Kratos shown, Athena talking while Kratos being silent. More Helghast can be seen in the back and cole can be spotted on the right.
1:23 Closer in on Athena, you can see some other sprots dude in the back with a guy with blonde hair straight up.
1:38 Little Sister, messing with her dress, with soldiers all around her

1:46: Ezio coming in with knives from his hands
1:49: Ghost standing up, saying some words now
1:51: some black dude wearing space garbage, getting to see the side it looks like equipment on a dude from Killzone series
1:53: Chimera yelling out, standing behind Helghast

Then at 2:03, it shows they got pictures of him EVERYWHERE. Creepy.....

I don't know who are the soldiers getting into the room, but I read they were characters from Airborne.
The characters I do know:

0:48: Uncharted's Nathan Drake hitting on Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning
0:56: Infamous' Cole McGrath (with a Helghast from Killzone in the background)
1:00: Dead Space's Isaac Clarke and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Ghost (Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth in the background)
1:06: Metal Gear Solid's Solid Snake (Old Snake version from MGS4)
1:14: Hitman's Agent 47. Just afterwards we can see Chell from Portal passing by briefly out of a blue portal in the background behind Sweet Tooth
1:16: Sackboy playing chess with Sweet Tooth
1:18: Kratos and Athena from God of War
1:37: Little Sister from Bioshock
1:45: Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed
1:50: An ISA soldier from Killzone
1:52: A Chimera from Resistance

And only now have I realized that the blue-glowing sphere in the money bowl at 0:35 is one of Sackboy's point bubbles.

Just finished viewing the trailer. All I thought at first was this:

After watching the second time, though, I actually enjoyed it. Not only did it have some of the most epic cosplay ever, but it did send out a very touching message to all gamers. I always love Sony's advertisements; they're either funny or incredibly enjoyable like this one.

Now if they can only stop hyping up such minor things so much....

I found some more stuff.

When the soldier start approaching through the woods, you can see eyes (Helghast?) in between the trees.

Outside the joint, you may notice a familiar vehicle.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/schm01978/sweet_toothstruck.jpg

Look familiar?

http://files.g4tv.com/ImageDb3/275451_S/twisted-metal-sweet-tooth-truck-in-real-life.jpg
(Sweet Tooth's Truck)

When the soldiers enter the bar, above the door appears to be latin:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/schm01978/longliveplay_latin.jpg

Google translate disagrees with my attempts at transcribing it, but it comes close. The letters are scarcely legible to begin with. I'm fairly sure it reads "Long Live Play".

When they pan over to coat check, you can catch a glimpse of the MkII from Metal Gear Solid scooting away:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/schm01978/mkII.jpg
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/schm01978/mkIIb.jpg

There's also an old-skool Playstation logo above the coat check. Anyone know where the dogs are from?

When they zoom in, there's all sorts of stuff on the walls. The only thing I can make out is PaRappa the Rapper, a wanted poster that looks straight out of Red Dead Redemption, and a car that looks like it's from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. And of course, the Little Big Planet point bubbles.

I think the weapon with the three green dots in it is an Auger from Resistance, a weapon that shoots green energy blasts through walls. But most importantly, the smaller object with blue lights on the left is Ratchet's Omni-Wrench.

Actually, at around 1:46, when Ezio comes in to get some spotlight on him and starts talking, Ratchet is there infront of him listening, although Hitman is blocking a little of him.

I don't see how my time zone comes into play here, but whatever you say.

Besides--who says any information I provide in my profile is accurate?

Your time Zone means you're either American or Canadian (or maybe some Latin America country), whereas Rabid Coot is European (namely British). Thus, things a Britishman might know (like where to find a spot of tea) would be unknown to a Yankey such as yourself.

Timezone gives a rough indication of where people are and is assumed accurate because people tend to want the forums time to match their own.

Yankey? Yankee? How naive.

Yankee doesn't mean the same there as it does here.

What exactly does it mean to you? Are you referring to this?

In English-speaking countries outside the United States, especially in Britain, Australia, Canada,[23] Ireland,[24] and New Zealand, Yankee, almost universally shortened to Yank, is used as a derogatory, playful or colloquial term for Americans.
In certain Commonwealth countries, especially Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Yank has been in common use since at least World War II, when hundreds of thousands of Americans were stationed in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Depending on the country, Yankee may be considered mildly derogatory.

I would tell say we should get back on topic...

... but seeing as how it was a mod who first got us off topic, I don't think we have anything to worry about :kz:. Unless schm0 infracts himself. Hm.

Ah well.

That's exactly what it means to me, so I guess it doesn't mean something different after all.

...which makes it still naive.

Methinks you do not have any understanding of what the word "naive" means.

How naive.

I know exactly what it means, and questioning my knowledge of the English language at any point in time is the epitome of naive.

Tell me...does your naivete tell you that I'm American?

Uh, just noticed the arc welder from Dead Space back there. Second gun from the left.

I'm sure there's tons more we missed, but alas, the OP has chosen to close the thread. Let's all try to keep it on topic a bit more next time, eh?
