Silhouette Shinobi: Torn Between

Archive: 16 posts

Made LBPCentral Community Spotlight 69 (Thank you!):
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/content.php?306-Community-Spotlight-Episode-69

The village and its inhabitants torn to shreds and set aflame. You start to wonder, were they ever really that significant? With your whole life in the deafening ring of solitude, you journey east, away from the place you grew up in, but never really called home.

I've always wanted to make a silhouette-ish level. This level has simple gameplay, brainteasers and a heartfelt story. It will have 3 or 4 more parts. Give it a try and tell me what you think. Enjoy

Edit: Mine cart respawn is now active and works like it should.

Further edit: Manual respawn is now implemented. Hold CIRCLE to respawn

So i played your level Mrtran and i have nothing but good things to say about it your beautiful level is astounding on so many levels i love the silhouette style and the music they go together in perfect harmony you really feel the emotion in this level through the way you told the story it's a story many can relate to and that is why i loved it so much.
And the brainteasing game play really makes you think you showed real ingenuity on the game play and puzzles as well as the artistic level design was among the best Ive seen you make.
As for bugs i didn't encounter any very well polished level.
I really hope this gets MM picked MrTran your time has come for you to be crowned and sit among the best of the LBP creators.

Alright, I played your level and I have to say that it is awesome.

The story at the beginning was most impressive due to the fact that you had a graphical scene playing out. It was very long which is not a bad thing unless you have to restart the level multiple times, because it is not a skip-able scene. Overall it was artistic, cinematic and flawless. It set the mood so well and had a classic Japanese storybook feel to it.

Starting the level was neat. I enjoyed the way the wisps could be collected, and the fact that they had poetic dialogue. The atmosphere was awesome; also, the visual design was spectacular. the obstacles and puzzles were well designed with the perfect degree of difficulty.

The part where the player must use a cart of _____ to get past a fire pit is a little shaky. If something goes wrong then the player must restart the level. The cart is very light; therefore, it can tip over. The _____ inside the cart are also very light, and can fall out when the cart is pushed, or after the player jumps on them. After your corrections, these problems are unlikely to happen, but did happen to me once, so I know it may happen again to other unlucky players. Never fear, the replay button is here Considering that it is the only time players may have to restart the level, the cart part can be written off as NOT a flaw. That is up for the players to decide.

It is rare to see a level with awesome visuals, awesome story, awesome puzzles, awesome obstacles and an original feel. This is one of those rare levels. Based on your levels from LBP1, everyone knew you could do awesome visuals, but this story-driven awe-inspiring level is a step up from what you've done before. Please continue this epic series.

Thank you Raptor88Blue for your lengthy review. I'm sorry you had to replay the level so many times to get the mine cart to work. The rocks that go in the mine cart are supposed to be light so they don't weigh the cart down so much. One is dissolve and the other is actually stone.

Okay so I've been working with the mine cart spawn and playtesting for a good hour or so and it works like it should. I had to sacrifice something but I feel that it is worth it now more than ever.

Thank you for your kind comments and thanks for playing and telling me your troubles! When are you going to make that Space Above and Beyond 2 Part 2, sir?

Silhouette got a Heart and a yay! before the opening was over. I'm a bit of a grammar nazi sometime, so all it took to get the accolades was having a solid opening scene with speech bubbles that weren't spelled like a text from a 14 year old girl.

+ The big obvious one, the silhouette almost always gets someone an instant thumbs up if they put forth just a minimal amount of effort. However you didn't just put in the minimal amount, the small tweaks, color changes and text outlines really brought out the feel much more beyond the generic high contrast level.

+ The level had some solid puzzles, which i'm honestly a sucker for.

+ Small visual tweaks to the shape of the level was great, things like spinning gears and rugged terrain all looked great on the silhouette background.

+ Sounds sound awesome. The whole package was loaded with great sound effects tuned perfectly to each corresponding action. Every rock, gear and fall had a equally satisfying plod, chink, and ploom to go with them.

- While the two tone style of the level does add quite a bit of atmosphere, it does require special attention to the environment by the creator so as to make sure objectives are never lost or hard to find. The opening where you lay rocks across the yellow electric pit was made needlessly difficult by the fact that once you pull the fairy out of the rocks, they essentially blend into the floor of the level. Subconsciously, the player will forget those rocks were even there or that they were even grab-bale since they cannot discern what material they're made out of. I can only recommend that you add different, transparent materials to objects of interest.

-And to further continue that topic, i had to quit halfway through the level because of the sheer difficulty of trying to figure out where to go next. (i was putting rocks on a mine elevator. Was I on the right track?) Keep in mind how many other levels there are in LBP and that when someone gets stuck in a level they have two options: Restart and replay the entire level (complete with intro), or leave and find a new distraction. Just really try to make the solutions just ever so slightly easier.

When it boils down to it though, this is a great level, I'd love to see more (easier ) levels.

F4F: (Containment.) It's in my signature, i'd appreciate more feedback.

Bercilak - Cool, tell me what you think.

Nightshade_games - Thank you for the detailed review and the kind comments. I have taken your 2 negatives into consideration. I also agree with them both and for the rocks in the beginning, I have made them glow. Hopefully that will remind the player and more importantly hint that the rocks are there to help you. For the rocks near the elevator, you were on the right track using the rocks, however, that's only half of the equation .

The thing is, for the intro, I was thinking to make it only a minute or two long. But the more I created it, the more I realized I could make it more heartfelt. I realize that does not bode well for players that get stuck and need to restart. However this is my first time creating a cinematic intro and I will take more into consideration on seperating long intros into a cinematic level so they are skippable for further projects.

Thank you for your constructive criticism! I'm off to play your level now.

Infernal - Lol *explodes*
