You Vote Level Competition Choices!

Archive: 25 posts

Hello, this is Dragonvarsity. I haven't done many competitions here at LBPC, just one (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=54199-LBPC-Project-Poster-Contest!) but it would be cool to host more in the future. I have a few ideas in my head but I'm not sure which to do. You can vote which one you would like to have as the competition. (I'm not too good with polls, never done one for a thread before, I pressed 4 for amount in poll but it didn't give me blank spaces to write options, oh well, guess I'll find out what happens when I post thread). I'll have the options down here though too, with better explanation. (all the level examples shown aren't actual levels, but merely examples for reference incase you're confused.)

This competition would require that you create a level with two or more completely different themes together, we'd recommend ones not used too much like Steampunk, as it's become mroe of it's own style completely, but maybe mix that with something else. You can mix together styles and themes, here are some examples that could be solid entries below.

Description: The War is over, and your mission is done. you and some other soldiers take a military vessel, codename the Iron Seagull, across hidden waters to journey home safely, but when an enemy ship hits your own, you must drive it home, avoiding other enemy ships, following the glimmer cast from the Lighthouse ahead. This is a combination of stormy weather, out in the ocean with some steampunk mxied in with the ship's designs.

Description: when the King's castle and all of his precious land is created to make everything look jagged with lines popping out and weird shaped all around, changing the look of everything, even the ing himself, decreasing the value of his beloved home, which he planned on selling so he could retire. Stop this mysterious villain before he gets away for good! This is a combination of a certain style of art, similar to that of Pablo Picaso's and the Medeival theme, including a castle, kngihts and of course, a magical forest!

The levels in Little Big Planet can be a lot of fun, and it wouldn't hurt if a few gave you some real world historical/scientific informaiton aswell, right? As long as it's not like some hour-long video having text after text with factual information. This competition, if voted the most, would require you to make a level or series of levels, ( like more than one published, I allow that you use as many level links you want for whichever contest is chosen, but of course, don't make it too long, that's what seperately published ones are for if you desire it being more, well, lengthy) based off a certain person in history.

It can be a poet, a scientist, inventor, etc. and other people can go in and out if they're part of the history. Either it could be a fun little movie, some sort of educational minigame or a level where you use gameplay mechanics that fit with the surrounding, such as wiuith their scientific theories, or bouncing off stanzas, or it doesn't have to be like that. Whatever creative sparks that would enter your mind, like picking up cheese with facts engraved in the dairy products, or whatever you think would work. Now though, time for an example.

Description: Learn about an Italian physicist by the name of Galileo, who has helped given birth to Modern Sceince, sharing his improvements to the telescope, noticing all kinds of things out in space such as sun spots, and having to deal with the churches, trying to disclaim his theories from others.

That's the only two I have ideas for rigt now, I don't wanna be too basic like co-op contest, not right now at least but it's good when there's more than one mind to examine things so before voting really begins, you can give some suggestions, then maybe do a final vote. But as for the tow right now, you can share your thoughts and whatnot, I hope to make a good contest everyone can enjoy.

(P.S. Sorry about the blog, laptop crashed week after it returned from being fixed, took them 3 weeks to fix it up again, and I picked it up few days ago. Still having problems with the Input Signal for Dazzle through Pinnacle Studio, and I've tried everything, watched more tutorial videos, exchanged wires, etc.)

EDIT: Cant edit polls so if someone makes suggestion of a contest that would be cool, you can post here and if someone votes on a contest idea someone thought up, they can post their vote on the thread and I'll just tally it up along with any votes from people over at Little Big Network aswell.

EDIT #2: Suggestion from Darkcloudrepeat. If you'd like to vote for it, you can message the vote to me or post it here so I cannot edit the poll with his suggestion. Anyway, here it is.

This contest would require that you create a level with a story, not just gameplay, but told through visuals, images, whatever. Just no text bubbles, no voice acting, no text, besides scribbles in a book, of course, kind of like an episode of Mr. Bean when you think about it, although they sometimes try fitting a word or two in somewhere. The level would have to make it clear at what's happening. Like some say, "when you block out one sense, that can make the others work better" or something like that. So by using lighting, sounds and other tools, hopefully you would be able to whip together a nice level, or movie. Examples can be found below.

Description: It's not every day that a sackperson loses his voice. When you're not able to speak even a word, you must retrace your steps from last night and find out why you can't say a darn thing!

Hi,

I actually like both of them, each one sounds very interesting! I like how they're really free regarding the theme. But still I voted for your first idea as I think mixing several (sub-)genres requires more creativeness and artistry, and I'd be delighted to enter such a contest! I hope you'll get some support from MM for it to get better known.

Thank you very much, props to my friend L1GhTmArE for the Contradiction Idea, oh and the idea of making a poll for it. Plus it was fun trying to think up convincing examples to support both types of contests And If I were to somehow have the time and knowledge of Logic in Little Big Planet, then I would have to some day make that Iron Seagull Level possibly. x]

Oh, and about a prize, I expect to give some XP left over, but also giftsome sort of chosen DLC up to a certain amount of money, or some code or whatever, but the only problem is I know codes are region-locked, just not sure if gifting is, so I might need some sort of alternate solution, as there a lot in the UK that could enter, unless codes work with UK and U.S., I just don't know. And of course people in other places too.

I like the first idea the most, there is much more choice with a non-historical source of creation reference.
But then again LBP is a great and fun way to teach subjects and this would be another great opportunity to show that. Maybe do both but separately?
It sounds like it would be a great contest, the last one you hosted was an amazing one and I doubt this would be any different in scale.
Once again I am willing to support your competition for prizes regarding the EU region based winner(s)/player(s), however you will have to take care of the US winner(s)/player(s).
Regarding prizes I want to go a step above the original XP based prizes, maybe something along the lines of PSN vouchers? I wouldn't mind chipping in some money.

Thanks for your thoughts Dark. Like I said in my post above yours, I too want to do something more than just XP, and I think gifting a chosen DLC or a code or whatever would be cool. That's very kind of you, willing to donate but you don't have to, although I would then have to find an equivalent for the EU people. I'll make sure to message you any thoughts I have regarding the prize, and you can do the same likewise if anything else pops up in your head aswell. I think it would be best if we do the Contradiction Contest. My apologies for not knowing but a nice fellow over at Little Big Network told me when seeing my contest thread made on LBN that there was already a competition similar to the Biographical one called "The Legends" contest. I've never heard of it but icnase they are quite alike, then it would be weird to do a contest somewhat after that one that's similar. I'm not discolsing this just yet so you can still vote if you want, infact I forgot to have this end at a certain date xD2011-09-26 19:40:00

I thought of another idea.
How about create a level with a story but create it without the use of Magic mouths or any words/subtitles. In other words: tell a story with the visuals?

I like this idea, very good way to make you use your imagination. Plus might be a good way to use sticker creator, but wouldn't be essential. If you want, I can add it as an option to the OP.

If you want you can add it as a choice in your opening post, I don't mind.

*EDIT*
Just curious but when will you be starting up these competitions?
Right now there is a lot of competitions around the web so I think you should wait a bit for the official start-up of the competition.
I also got a nice idea for the "Without Words" competition, I died a little bit inside. I am not going to enter though, I will support your competitions.

Good Idea. Should I wait until after Halloween or is that too long? I hope the "Without Words" is a good name, at least for the time being, it's just something that popped in my mind quickly. And when you said that you died a bit inside, I hope you mean that in a good way.....somehow xD And thanks for the support, it means a great deal.2011-09-26 23:12:00

Those sound like great ideas for contests! I agree with everyone else that the contradicting styles level is a more original theme than the history one but I really like the Without Words concept too. Looking forward to seeing what people do with these.

I think Darkcloudrepeat is quite right about waiting for a while though. The MMP and MMS contests end on 25th October and Crowns4Games ends on 15th December but I suspect a lot of creators will have finished their entries for that one before then as the contest has already started. So, yes, November looks good.

Best of luck with the contests!

@shropshirelass: Thanks for the support, you make some good points aswell.

@Gravel: Little ideas like that is why I am so eager to hold contests like these. xD

I like Darkcloudrepeat's idea with Gravel's title. Sounds like you could get some very interesting levels. 2011-09-28 16:38:00

Thanks, also, should we just pretend the Something Else Poll Option is for the Without Words Competition Idea, because if so, it's starting to catch up with Contradiction one it seems.2011-09-28 16:51:00

I would like to see more wario ware levels.

When you say WarioWare levels, do you mean levels based off games with WarioWare in the title, or would it be other games with Wario as the main character, just not with the WarioWare part in the name, such as "Wario World" or "Wario: Master of Disguise". Currently there are six WarioWare games, 4 of which came out for portable devices only, 1 for the Wii, and 1 for both an earlier console and portable device.

The warioware series in genral. The hologram material is perfect for this type of game and a move version would work well and could really show off the creators imagination.I did play one not that long ago but it could've been better and I would love to see what some of the better creators could come up with.2011-10-01 15:55:00

I haven't played a single WarioWare game, they seem sorta fun though. I'm just worried that maybe WarioWare might be a bit restrictive, maybe have it along with other Mario Spin-offs?2011-10-01 16:18:00
