Escheresque

- Short (about 5 minutes)
- Combination of abstract visual styles
- Gameplay: light puzzle exploration
- Multiple paths (2 endings)
- Find hidden points!

It's simple enough, but with a few "oh wow" moments I hope you will enjoy.

wow! just wow. You do more with one or two materials than most people do with the whole library. The level was clean, fun, and worked perfectly. There were a few times that I got frustrated, but that is all on me; I missed a switch in the level both times.

Fantastic!

Being an art student and a particular Escher fan, I'm liking this already. So going in the queue 2011-09-24 10:26:00

Thank you guys! After a hundred test plays I still miss certain grabs, but created this one more as a visual process for fun, so gameplay and smoothness/comprehension fell by the wayside a bit... certainly a lot of elements of the level go to waste as more can and should be done... if you get the "good" ending you get only a glimpse of the massive rotating room that originally could have been the piece de resistance... anyway, sorry for the quirks and bugs. Some things will be smoothed out when I get the inclination.

24 hours later... over 500 plays! And a pretty decent smattering of Yays! I feel this might be where I stop creating for a good while.

So thank you sincerely. Please enjoy. Thank you.

I really enjoyed it, very original and fun! It's great to play levels that have an original concept, while still being platformers.

I didn't know about the two endings until I re-read this thread though, which leads to my one small complaint. I got the bad ending, but there was no indication of why I got it, or what I would have to do differently to get the good ending. As far as I was concerned I activated all the switches and completed the level perfectly, so being rewarded with the bad ending was a bit of a let-down.

Please play my level Upsidewaysdown (http://lbp.me/v/4wjr2h) which is also an attempt to be Escheresque! And I wish now I'd thought of the title "Escheresque" before you did, or I would have used it. :-)

This isn't really a knock but someone made a level with the same name in LBP1. (It was actually MM picked. Just thought I'd point out that this level almost has something of a pedigree)

Lovely, great idea, awesome execution, too bad it's short.
I really do think you should evolve this idea with a longer level, moving sections and some insane camera angles, because the idea behind it it's really cool.

@Corchito: Thank you for the feedback. That's true, there's almost no handholding, but I did go back and add some arrows and things to help the user understand where to go next. The "bad" ending isn't really bad though, it's just the result of going in one direction. Going in another will take you to another ending. The problem of course is that a majority of players only ever experience about 40% of a level, and yeah, it's all rather obscure. I've always liked games like that though, playing without a strategy guide, realizing there are tricks and hidden areas. The level could definitely use improving, but in the past I've published something and fixed it daily, adding new parts and tweaking gameplay... this time I'm letting it all go. I can't invest any more time in it, and am just happy to see it has been played.

@DarkSeraphim666: I had no idea there was another Escheresque! Goes to show how little I play the online levels... and proves there are really no new ideas. Dang...

@OmegaSlayer: Thank you. The idea started out as a part of a Girl's Room sequel and I wanted it to be much bigger, but it just ate too much time. The whole level takes up about 50% thermo and there is a ton of room to build. I cut it short and wrapped up without adding story or creating more gameplay because I just need it to be over (creating). Family and work life have fallen apart and I need to start using my free time to fix that, instead of ignore it which the game helps me do rather too well.

Yeah, the other Escheresque was one of the first LBP levels ever...that doesn't mean the idea can't be twisted and worked on to make it fresh.
The gameplay is quite different in your level Arbiekko.

I will say it's a combination of luck and the very kind promotion of certain early players. For example, I posted it on Saturday (a.m. USA; midday UK/Eur; next day a.m. Japan) so it caught three waves of common player groups at once. And my second play was by Qrii_Nakari, a respected and influential creator who brought three friends in, all of whom Yayed and Hearted the level within 30 minutes of its posting. The algorithm of early Yays and Hearts pushed it onto the Cool Pages, combined with a whole lot of referrals from Qrii and friends (recent activity lists are to credit for this usually). What's especially kind is that they did this without my asking. I posted the level, then came to LBPC to publish a link, and left things alone until Monday.

It's easily my biggest hit, which is actually too bad as it's not nearly as in-depth or polished as my past works.

Don't be discouraged by low plays. I had a visitor a week for the first three months, then started doing okay with about a play a day, and then Girls Room 2 was put together with lots of promotion. People who played Girls Room 2 helped bring my plays for other levels up past 300 all in a few days. Now Escheresque has kicked those numbers up to 500 or so.

No longer playing the game now, though, so all that popularity goes to waste. Escheresque is my swan song.

Thats some luck you got there >.> I also know no one of great influence so that's out too, I believe the only reason I get plays at all is because of the 94 : 4 ratio >.<2011-09-28 06:17:00

arrrh bless I don't think I have a great influence, but I'll be your friend. Start sending out friend requests on the forums and letting people know what you're up to in creating in LBP. Hopefully word will spread. Being active online in the comunity helps especially leaving good reviews as other creators may read it and visit your planet out of curiousity and thanks. I'm yet to reply to your F4F, but don't worry I haven't forgotten.

I'm also adding this one to my queue.
