The Abandoned Mine

Archive: 20 posts

So here it is, my first level! It's a simple puzzle-platformer and it contains grapp hooks, grabinators and bounce pads. I spent quite a lot of time this week making sure everything works OK, but I'd like to know if you find any bugs and design flaws.

Attention to those who want to F4F, I can only play LPB2 until Friday (23 Sept.). After that I'm travelling to Belgium to study there this year and I don't know if I'll have internet acess on my PS3. So if you want to F4F, please do it as soon as possible

Thanks guys I'll have to check your planets to return the favor tomorrow.

I did a text search and there's loads of mine levels, so I'm starting to think I should have chosen a less generic title

I played this last night and thought it was not a bad 1st level. Certainly better than my first embarrassment or my 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. for that matter. There were some good solid game play ideas, but I would have liked to seen more layer shifting and for it to have been closed in a little more. It seemed pretty "open" for a mine. A couple of the areas were pretty big open spaces. Not enough mine carts. Also, on the mine cart puzzle? where you have to throw the coal into the minecart, maybe add a visible counter so players know when they can stop throwing coal. I was expecting to move forwards, so I kept throwing coal, waiting for that little wall to come down. After a while I backtracked to see if I missed something and then saw the elevator open. I liked how you double back and ended up coming up through that boarded up door, thought that was pretty cool.

In the beginning, your "mom" tells you to look out for the herbs. I never saw any. Unless I just completely overlooked them. I was expected those to be bonus points or something. I did find the other bonus area though.
Overall I didn't think it was bad. I had fun and it wasn't a waste of time and that's what matters. Good job man and I hope you have internet access in Belgium as I'd like to see more levels from you.

Thank you for your extensive feedback, biorogue

About the visible counter, there was an iron panel on the wall with 3 wooden switches, right next to thesign saying "coal". Each switch goes up when a minecart goes down and there's a few mechanic sounds when the third minecart is filled. I hoped people would notice but it's apparently too subtle. When I played it with my friend he didn't notice either and just kept throwing coal.
About the herbs, yes they are just an extra way of earning points. There's 3 on the main level and 1 in the sublevel. The first is very easy to spot, you just go to the left under the house and there it is. There's also a comical way to lose points and it involves being very rude to a certain minor character

Just played, very nice (and I did hear those sounds btw ;p)

It did bug a lil, when I first fell down shaft I died and was respawned back up top in the low light - I dont think that was supposed to happen...

Thanks, Masseyf!
That bug wasn't supposed to happen at all, never happened to me in the loads of times I playtested. I guess you were unlucky.

Good stuff.

Some issues.

I kept throwing coal like an idiot.

Behind the cart, a green tag is still visible.

Why are bounce pads in a mineshaft? Cover them with decs, or use the merge glitch. They don't fit in as is.

I found a couple flowers, but if that is going to be a side quest, let me know how many I collected. As is I have no idea if I did good or bad or if there were any more flowers to find.

Overall, a really nice level. Great design, fun, basic platforming. Despite that minor nitpicks, it is a fantastic first level! Glad to see its been a success for you.

Thanks CYMBOL, I appreciate your feedback. I didn't put a counter in the end telling how much of the herbs people collected because of the level link breaking the count and because it's not an important collectible, it's just an alternate way to earn points. I'll definitely have to do something about that tag. And maybe add a subtitle in which the player character notices the door is open, because apparently the panel with the 3 switches and the sound of the door opening isn't enough

And lamtom, I'll be playing your level in a minute

Okay guys, I updated the level (and playtested it because I don't trust myself and create mode )

-The visibility of the tag in the minecart puzzle has been removed
-I made a few tweaks to the cameras. The most important is the one in the "rocks lounge", I reduced its activation zone so that it doesn't get active when collecting the prize on the rooftop above.
-After completing the minecart puzzle the player character points out how the door has opened, so that the players who don't notice it don't keep unnecessarily lobbing coal.
-I noticed how a friend of mine jumped on the table that's in the lounge and grabbed the cake, so I added a minor story event in case that happens.

Also, I broke the 1000 plays/players.

Although it kinda makes me feel bad for the players that have a better level than me and don't get nearly as many plays

I really liked your level design. Was enjoyable to play through for sure.

I had a couple of buggy issues though. In the lounge where you could eat the cake, when he got up from the chair I accidentally pressed triangle so I sat in the chair and I couldn't get back out. When I first fell down the shaft I got squashed somehow. Also the white block that you need got stuck between the table and the shelves to the left. Don't know how I managed that. Those things didn't stop me from enjoying it of course though. Very good level.

Dude, a huge thanks for this! When I made that little event with the cake I didn't think about people getting into that controllinator. I went straight to my PS3 to fix this as soon as I read your post. It was a huge blunder of my part, I hope there weren't many people that got stuck and became angry
Anyway, I fixed it. Now you can exit the controllinator using either the left stick, or x, square, triangle, circle or R1. Any of these controls will make people eject from the seat. I also connected the white block that's supposed to knock down the closet with the grapp hook to the left wall with an invisible string so that you can push it but not drag it to the right. And to finish, I put a back wall where the first elevator is, before you could stare into the background of the level. I can't believe I missed that in the tons of times I playtested.

Again, thanks for reporting this. It'd be a disaster if I went to travel without fixing this

That was absolutely amazing! I loved how you did it, with all the small details making it brilliant! Overall, this is Mm Picks standard! And i bet if this doesn't, your future posts will be!

I played this last night and thought it was not a bad 1st level.
This is definitely not true, It was BRILLIANT for a first level! I'll be looking forward to your future levels, and keep creating!

Whoa, whoa, Mm Picks standards? Have you even played the latest MM Picks? Not a chance, man. There's way better levels than mine that get way less plays. I don't know how I reached 2000 plays. Guess I got lucky.
