Sci-Fi vs Fantasy

Archive: 13 posts

I have two project ideas that I would like to carry out for a whole platforming/sidescrolling RPG. But i'm tied up between which one i wish to do. I have some pros and cons for the both.

Sci-Fi
Pros
Music-Easier to make sci-fi music in my opinion.
Character-I have a really good character for it, as well as abilities.
Design-Good design for a outerspace theme.

Cons
Storyline- I really don't have a good one.

Fantasy
Pros
Storyline- A fantastic storyline in my opinion.
Free creativity- A lot more could be added such as dragons and mystical creatures.

Cons
Character-Lack of good abilities
Music-Harder to create for this genre.
Design-Everything is more involved around nature such as caves, and forests. Which I suck at making.

SO as you see, They're both good, but i'm torn between the two. Which do you guys perfer? Your thoughts?

Why not use aspects from both? They are quite different but enough alike that it could work.2011-09-18 23:21:00

I see what your saying, But i;m not sure how people will react with multiple themes. If that's what you are suggesting.2011-09-19 01:06:00

Some of the later Final Fantasy's draw inspiration from both of the genres.
A great example of the melding of these two genres would be Rouge Galaxy and I am sure it would be a great reference point for your project.
Well anyway best of luck to you with this project.

Well, fantasy music is easy to create now that we have a wide variety of orchestral instruments such as the clarinet, strings, and brass. I've already made a handful of songs from FFXI that sound great.2011-09-19 05:31:00

Star Ocean has been doing it for years.

Saying that you have good design and character elements in mind for Sci-fi makes me go with that, along with the fact that most RPG-styled levels in LBP2 are already medieval fantasy and a change of pace would be nice. Don't worry about story as much as you do gameplay; come up with stuff to propel things forward, but make sure playing it is enjoyable.2011-09-20 00:49:00

As i might have metntioned earlier it was a sidescrolling RPG. I'm planning on having gameplay somewhat similar to the Spell of rasack level. With platforming elements, and combat such as punching, and maybe shooting if it's the sci-fi one. I hope to have cinematic efforts as well for it.

Edit: The sci-fi one, I already have his abilties down, such as a wonderful looking jetpack (super excited with the results)
Wall ledging.
Energy shield to defend attacks.
Going to include a punch mechanic today,
and hopefully top it off with a gun maybe.

well IMO Sci-Fi design is easier therefore making a nice looking Fantasy level is a bigger achievement.

perhaps you could do something like Assassins Creed and have a sci-fi futurey bit, then you go back in time/simulation of a fantasy place - that would solve your lack of a sci-fi story

Personally, I prefer Fantasy over Sci-Fi but it seems that you feel that you want to do a Sci-Fi level - which is what truly counts. 2011-09-22 22:42:00
