SA reviews "0-1: The Warehouse"

Archive: 17 posts

Today I'm reviewing "0-1: The Warehouse", a tutorial level and basic outline for the hopefully upcoming "SuperPhillip" project. The author behind said project "SuperPhillip" (what a shock) has asked me to review this intro level, and so I shall. Will it be to his dismay? The answer is............no, the level is good, great and also mediocre all for different reasons, but never at any time is it actually bad, so congrats for a good start.

So what does this level consist of? Tutorials of course, because the best way to start off any game is with instructions; and while 0-1 does a great job explaining the basic functions of the game, it also has a problem: IT'S EXPLAINING ALL THE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE GAME...AGAIN! That means once again you have to go through all the "Press X to jump" and "Hold R1 to grab" instructions, and each time the cutscene voices hold you in place, making the replayability on this level certainly possible but very VERY repetitive and tedious. I have mentioned this before to SP, and he responded by telling me "pretend it's your first time playing a new game called 'SuperPhillip', and then you'll understand why there are tutorials for eveything", well that's fine but this isn't an entirely new game either; it's a game within a game, and the laws and rules and controls that your "game" is functioning under happen to be the same ones that everyone playing this game already know how to do. While I did thoroughly enjoy the perfectly executed camera angles on your cutscenes, the whole set just felt like it was latching me down to an ever expanding boulder.
I should clarify an earlier statement, no this aspect of the level does not make it bad in any way but it does make replaying the level extremely tiresome

One thing that this level definitely has working for it is charm, the simple mood and feel of the level are bold and exclaiming, and it's clear the author was very confident and sure of what he wanted his level to be, and so anybody playing the level will feel and understand it perfectly. This is by no means an easy task, because with so many different geniuses, normals, and idiots out there, everyone will have different interpretations of what the level looks and feels like, but in this rare circumstance anybody and everybody can play it and about 90-95% of them all will feel similarly about it. If 100 people play The Azure Palace, then about 75 will think it's amazing while about 24 will either think it's too hard or confusing or just plain complex.........plus 1 retard who thought it should be griefed . On the flip side, if 100 people were to play 0-1, about 93 of them will say it was charming and fun with slightly annoying tutorials and unbelievably devious prize bubbles, while maybe 4 of them will think it's just a silly level trying to mock LBP to a degree and another 3 won't really know what to think of it, but overall 0-1 has a certain consistency in it that makes it great.

I suppose other than the tutorials preparing me to lynch the television person, the only complaint I have about the level is the fact that it is overly easy, but I'm not really allowed to use that as a complaint because the level is designed to be a tutorial level, which by definition is usually never hard in the first place. I suppose what this means is you shouldn't play this level if you want any recognizable challenge, but rather play it to relax and have a little fun.

Besides if you want a challenge (or at least something closer to a challenge), his profile does have a challenge race version of this 0-1, which is actually fairly difficult and still retains the charm that is SuperPhillip.

Final Score:
7.5 / 10
While this level is entertaining, the re-explaining of everything and the lack of challenge do bring it down a tad. Still, it does make me very curious to see the future that is "Project SP". Good luck SuperPhillip, hopefully everything will turn out well.

On a side note, I think if 100 people played "The Trial of Skill", about 55 of them would say it's a horribly dificult level, 30 of them would say it can't be beaten and is stupid, 11 of them would try it many times for at least an hour before quitting, about 6 of them would actually enjoy it and relish the challenge, and the last 3 would've gone "bibbildy".

I pretty much agree entirely. I'm sure that his next level is going to be a lot better.2008-12-23 07:33:00

"it's a game within a game, and the laws and rules and controls that your "game" is functioning under happen to be the same ones that everyone playing this game already know how to do"

It's like you understood that I'm making it as if LBP doesn't exist, but then you go onto say this showing that you DON'T understand what I'm doing. lol

The thing is, LBP does infact exist. Thus making the tutorials in this level not worthwhile.

Really? It does exist?
No way! That is phenomenal! I did not know that!
I'm using sarcasm, of course.

It seems the point is going above some folks' heads. I'm not going to debate it any further. I've explained it well enough as is. Thanks.

I'm not going to go beyond what I've already said. That would just be insult to injury, and that's really not needed.

Besides, as I pointed out, the level is good. No need for tears

Are you trolling me? What injury?
And what tears?

I appreciate you trying to discredit me, but seriously, how rude. Totally uncalled for. I'll be ignoring you as well.

P.S. I asked you NOT to review my level after the fact, too. Thanks for reading.

Oh geez, here we go.
Look dude, I'm not attacking you, hell I was freaking defending you. No need to get all snippy with me, I'm not trying to be the bad guy here

For the record, you said exactly that I "didn't have to review it if I didn't want to", but that's fighting against me because I love reviewing levels. I saw also that you said "take my name off the list", but I actually didn't think you were serious at the time because I had mentioned flooding of requests and I thought you were trying to make yourself sound unimportant (don't get me wrong, I know someone in real life that does that kind of stuff all the time. She crossed out half of her own Chirstmas list because she thought it would just be troublesome for others). So, I'm sorry I reviewed your level. If you don't want me to review anymore (of yours), that's fine, but I'm not trying to undermine anyone here.

I'm actually surprised. Most of the time I'd expect people to get mad at me for calling a level bad (which usually there was a good reason for it), but it seems you are mad at me for calling your level good. I'm gonna have to reflect on this a bit..........:kz:

I just didn't see the need to say "adding to insult to injury".
Could you clarify?

Okay, that's referring specifically to the concept of "Tutorial explanations" from your level, which was the topic of discussion at the time. I may have made it sound like it was a bad thing (which I can't actually say it was a great thing), but anything else I would've said past what I mentioned in the review would've probably just seemed insulting at that point.

Okey dokey.

Yeah, it came off as "snippy" on your behalf, too. hehe
It's okay. We both misunderstood one another.

Then this matter is happily resolved and no one had to die.
