tricks with opaque meterial

Archive: 17 posts

i made this thread to help users get used to the new material, and as with any material it has its own little quirks

*if you put it in the 3d layers it will phase behind any object.
*in create it will try to be seen as a somewhat solid object (as in it will try to block out all other things)
*layer wise i noticed it will try to over lap things in the same layer how it decides this I'm not sure.
*if you try to simply replace all of your hologram with the new material, it will not work! where as hologram would be invisible when brightness is zero this will only be invisible when opacity is zero. wires will still transfer. remember black stickers, WILL NOT make portions invisible, which is where the move paint comes in! or some fancy corner editing?
*pictures seem a little lighter then normal
*white stickers will simply glow in the color you choose
*its the first non solid, yet a solid color, material
*it has a lighter tint then hologram, so colors that were perfect, may now be off
please add on! post below and we can make this a really informational topic!

Well the sticker material works differently than holo, the way the sticker panel works is that u place a sticker the game reads it and shows only the sticker part, so im not sure if they can make black stickers invisble since the material just reads where a sticker is placed, maybe they could make some sort of special sticker that makes the material invisble but to go trough all that i would just replace the holo and sticker it.2011-09-15 10:36:00

Now most people consider sticker panel to basically be an opaque, non animated holo, one thing is definately weird about it.. A thin layer of sticker panel will overlap a thin layer of holo if they are on the same thin layer. This is very strange because a thin layer of holo will overlap any other material.. but to add to your list.. sticker panel can also be used to make walk-through walls so you don't have to deal with "dead" materials anymore Its also the first no clip "solid" material which has got to be the best use of it.2011-09-22 06:25:00

Yeah i noticed that even when you have two thin pieces of holo and sticker material on the same layer and the sticker material is set to transparent with say a button you still can'y see the holo underneath it. Well at least that is what happened to me anyway.2011-09-22 06:57:00

that's lbp's engine for you... it cant display two transparent materials or items... it can learn a thing from minecraft 2011-10-08 18:27:00

I think that the way sticker panel material overlaps is that the newest piece of it is in front of everything else EG:
I place a square of sticker material and sticker it with a red circle, then i make another square and sticker it with a blue circle, the blue will be in front of the red when they are on the same layer because it is newer

I think that the way sticker panel material overlaps is that the newest piece of it is in front of everything else...

It's not quite that simple. From another thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=63424-...Sticker-panel-not-layering-good...)...

After playing a bit more, it seems you can composite stickers on the same layer. The trick is to manipulate the rendering z-order of not only the stickers, but also the sticker panel, although I'm not sure how to control it precisely.

What did work was to create a bunch of overlapping panels with stickers, then when I hit rewind, it adjusted the z-order of some of them to the point where the stickers composite with those on the same layer.

Not sure how reliable this is, though.

...is the order still deterministic?

The order only seems to change when you rewind or fast-forward (and possibly when you save/reload the level), but only under certain circumstances.

It'll be completely deterministic, but it's sufficiently inscrutible that a 'trial and error' approach is pretty much all you can do.

thanks for the more in-depth explanation, i havent really needed to make seperate bits of sticker panel order a certain way before where i couldnt just use one bit for multiple stickers. 2011-10-11 19:59:00

The phasing of the sticker material in the 3D layers sounds similar to what holo does in the same situation: it only is visible where it moves in front of other materials. Whether this happens in the background I cannot say, but I noticed in the foreground layers.

I solved this by placing a block of holo behind it (1% brightness, set to dark blue; it is almost completely invisible in Play mode), which extends from the foreground layer all the way to the 3 normal layers. With this behind it, the holo will always show up in the 3D layer. And this works for sticker panel as well.

It's pretty obvious but keep in mind that you can sticker the sides of it. Great for ivy and things like that (middle right):

But be careful stickers are invisible when viewed from the back.

Also, by setting the brightness to 0 all stickers will only be visible as a silhouette, which I think looks great in the background of nighttime levels.

And of course it's can be used as water. Has the advantage that it doesn't use up as much thermo and you can have pools of it.

Partially, yes! The thread where those pics can be seen didn't exactly garner much attention.

But I also thought more people should know.

On lbp.me if you click on Published Levels the newest is at the top. If you select a level, the date it was published on is displayed under Info.

Thanks for playing it, by the way!

it was great! and i didn't realise you could find out the date that way. it still would be nice to have the publishing date next to/or below the level info straight up though.
