(LBPC3) Night at the Old Mill

Archive: 7 posts

I should've put this in the showcase ages ago, I'm not really sure why I'm only posting it now. Basically, as soon as I joined LittleBigPlanet Central, I saw that the LBPC3 was going on and decided to give it a shot.

For some reason, you have been trapped in an abandoned mill overnight. All the machinery is beating to the music and you need to get out! As I am not very good at making strong visuals, I decided to work heavily on the gameplay. The design of the level is very simplistic (only three different materials) but, in my opinion, the gameplay and sound is very good, so is the synching to the music. (I think) I have synched every single gameplay element to the music!

These screenshots don't show much, but they give you a feel of the level:

Also, just thought that I'd point out that this is the first time I've made a level with a deadline AND the first time I've ever made my own music

Just played this level and I got stuck on the wheels that rotate towards you. What am I missing? I couldn't jump over them and either got flipped back towards the checkpoint or fell to my death. Up to this point there was some very good gameplay obstacles. I like the idea of having to be in sync with the beat to progress. Also I feel some more visual interest is needed. It felt a bit bland so try some stickers and decorations on the large black areas.2011-11-05 21:49:00

You can grab the center of the rotating wheels. And yeah, my strong points are gameplay not visuals

OK. I gave this another go. This time with your advice above (I now don't know why I missed it before) I got over the wheels easily. Your obstacle design is very good. The stairs that move in and out is quite ingenious. First you have to avoid them, but then you have to use them to advance. However I spent about 10 mins (I am not exaggerating) trying to get past these stairs. And in the end, after a lot of cursing and swearing, I just gave up. However this seems to be more about my platforming ability than anything else since I see other players have managed to advance past this section.2011-11-15 08:00:00

I never realised that people found it that hard! (in my opinion, that's not even the hardest part!) I might add a 'slow down the beat' function if a player is getting stuck on one section of the level for too long.2011-11-18 18:59:00

Two small updates:
Bug fixes
Added 'Challenging' to the title due to a large number of reviews commenting on how difficult it is
