Grid Mode...

Archive: 14 posts

I don't think the grid is aligned in the same way every time you enter grid mode... I went to work on a level I started yesterday, and when I started erasing some bits I noticed that my 1x block was shaving less than a 1x block from the edge of a piece of stone.

Yeah, I explained that horribly. If it's happened to you, you'll know what I'm talking about, and if it hasn't then you've just got that much more of a reason to consider me insane. Anyway, if that's right, then that's very, very not cool. =[

You probably didn't use the grid for the stone. That's the only explanation I see.2008-12-23 01:46:00

I've had this happen to me countless times, and I'm finding it increasingly annoying. It's possible that something caused the material to move out of place slightly.

At the same time, I've often used dark matter to hold things in place, but the grid still ends up being a little off sometimes.

Either way, I have no idea why this happens sometimes.

Yeah, that happened to me dozens of times. The grid reconfigures itself every other time depending on where you place your first piece of material. All I can say is... The corner editing tool works miracles. Use it wisely.2008-12-23 01:54:00

This kills grid mode for me. I use the grid like I use pixels when I make pixel art. Having floppy irregular pixels isn't cool. I request that someone with more motivation than myself starts a petition to have Mm change it so that the grid is permanently fixed. A "very small" grid mode would be useful, too.

Actually, I think it's biggest different materials have different sizes, for example. I had a very small sponge block. I went ahead and changed it to dark matter, and boom. The block was gone, same happened with metal, it just got bigger. I think that's what it is... I'm not sure.2008-12-23 02:44:00

I've only tried to use Grid Mode once, and right off the bat I could tell it was useless. It's just too clunky. I honestly don't know what the purpose of Grid mode is. It's fairly easy to make perfect shapes without it.2008-12-23 03:05:00

I like to measure things, and keep things absolutely, perfectly aligned. There are no LittleBIG rulers in create mode, so I use grid mode. Exclusively. Having it spit out random grids, instead of aligning everything to just a single fixed grid... just... isn't cool. To each his own.

...What's a "perfect shape"?

Grid mode is actually very handy. When it comes down to pistons and winches and stuff. Say you have grid mode off, you attach a piston to one block and goo all the way up to another block, chances are it's not perfectly straight, with grid mode it alligns it for you. It does come in handy...2008-12-23 03:33:00

You didn't measure that. You don't know how many units tall, or wide it is. You just drew it. If you wanted to create another piece that fits into that you'd have to guess and check.

Needs more grid. Precision is beautiful.

Hmmmm. Oooooh. That's why people use grid. You justified Grid mode. Good jorb!

Grid is excellent for creating sections and then alligning them together without any gaps at all. You can't do that while free handing shapes. There will always be a slight gap or a slightly different angle.2008-12-23 10:54:00

Myself, I could not live without grid mode, the number of uses for it are astronomical.

The grid mode IS actually fixed to always stay the same, what changes is the corner the grid uses to "snap" objects by. This becomes particularly evident the more irregular an object's shape. For instance, if I take such an object and move it left once, then right once, it will not be in the same position if I then move it right once, and then left once. This is because the corner chosen is no longer the same because I changed the direction of the object's movement. This applies to the corner editor as well.

Something I find annoying is that when you make objects that are smaller than the smallest grid mode, using it becomes almost useless as you have to make adjustments in non-grid mode all the time.
