update on the Scoreboards

Archive: 6 posts

This is a repost of a repost of a post. I think that's right. Anyway, Baghead inc posted this over at the planetarium and it was originally posted by Spaff at the LittleBigWorkshop (http://forums.littlebigplanet.com/t5/General-Discussion/did-the-patch-fix-the-online-story-scoreboards/m-p/386318#M183072) So, Thanks Baghead for reposting it.
Just spreading the word to those who may not have seen it and are curious about the scoreboards

HI

The scoreboards aren't broken, they are disabled because they were being ruined by people exploiting a glitch. there's no point in re-enabling them whilst this glitch is still in the wild, as the scoreboards will become more and more corrupted, and scores themselves will become pointless.

We've been adding fixes to circumvent this problem, and we have more to come. 1.06 addressed some of the problem, 1.07 will address the rest (we hope!). 1.07 is due to arrive in a few weeks time, if all goes to plan.

I'm sorry we haven't been great at communication on this issue - to be honest, I thought the fixes were in 1.06 and that we'd be able to have the scoreboards back this week, but that was my mistake - Sorry! =/ The Scoreboards will return as soon as we are satisfed that people's game experience won't be ruined.

How about some transparency to make up for it?

How does a fix get into the game?

This is an approximation of the process a game update goes through...

Every time we make a game update, the entire game needs to go through a lengthy and detailed QA (Quality Assurance) process to make sure we didn't introduce something nasty into the game - nastier than the things we were trying to fix in the first place for instance, like a crash that happens every time you load a specific story level or something like that.

Once we have a fix for something in the studio, we can't roll it out straight away. First of all fixes are checked in by programmers, and these are then tested here by our QA team, and simultaneously by the first pass testers at Sony.
Once we and they are both satisfied, we bundle up the fixes into an update and deliver it to another QA team at Sony. Of course, toward the end of that testing, we may decide to try and sneak another fix into the update, which means this QA has to start again.

With a game like LBP testing is extremely complicated, as combinations of tools make weird things happen - as you all have seen with the various odd glitches you guys find! This makes QA for LBP take longer than for say, a more linear level based game, and even then we can't possibly test for *everything*

This second QA team at Sony then test the update themselves, but this time for very specific things that are required to work a certain way across all games on the playstation 3 - this includes things such as the way the game handles saving, or the messages it displays when a save game fails to load properly, etc. These Sony QA teams work on all games across PlayStation, and so we have to book them ahead of time, and share them with everyone else.

Once it is okayed by this team, the update goes to another team who can put it up on the store and make it available for download. This has to be scheduled in ahead of time also, as these teams also work across all games. Finally once that is all set up, the update goes down the tubes and into your PlayStations for you to enjoy.

This whole process takes weeks to complete, and the more we put in it, the longer it takes. A more detailed update, such as a level pack, takes longer than just a small set of fixes or a new costume pack.

All of these checks and procedures may seem frustratingly slow, especially when you don't hear anything from us about it, but they are ultimately there to assure the best possible quality for any game update you get.

I really hope we can get the scoreboards back online soon - I apologise for not being vocal enough on the fix status!

Thanks!

Oh finally, I'd take this opportunity to state that both our and Sony's QA teams are amazing people, without whom we would never be able to ship a game. They are ninjas of the highest order, and are deeply cool people. Thank you QA!

So it looks like it'll be a little while longer before those scoreboards are up. I've almost forgotten they were down, it's been so long.

Reading between the lines: there is limited resources, we just released a MASSIVE update and changed some core gameplay features AND we put out new levels. We need a break... *cries*2011-09-13 23:04:00

Maybe if MM hadn't been busy coding up a fresh batch of bugs for the 1.06 update this could have been addressed sooner. What a load...it clearly wasn't a priority and the Move pack was. I sure hope 1.07 fixes the nasty PS3 reboot that their awesome and lengthy QA process flushed out...probably not though, wouldn't be time for a proper QA, lol. 2011-09-13 23:28:00

I havent! QQ Every time I play a random level Im completely uninterested in getting a nice score - which is sad :/ and its funny the part about the huge QA they put each patch through, 1.06 seems to have its share of problems....

Still - nice to know where they are at and they havent forgotten... does take away from the online experience imo. (Also the fact you cant see who completed the level)

I'm so relieved that Mm is still working on the scoreboard glitch and haven't forgotten about it. Can't wait for the fix!
Because I only need the story scoreboard 50 and 25% until I get my platinum trophy. SO EXCITED!
