i'm due to go online this month and i was wondering what happens when you go into a story level and there are already people there. do you get the content unlocked or do the people who are already there get it? do i have to invite (if that's possible) others to help me unlock it or is it automatic. i just want everything!!!

No, there is a player sign at the start (once passed no more players can join the game) so you cant join at the end.

No, there is a player sign at the start (once passed no more players can join the game) so you cant join at the end. Actually, you can still join, but you won't spawn in the level. However, if the existing player(s) haven't lost any lives prior to touching the scoreboard, the game still deems the joining player(s) to have aced the level upon doing so. In other words: you can get someone else to ace levels for you - if they're willing of course.

I thought most (or even all) of LBP2's levels didn't have those signs, but I didn't really check for them when I played. It's one of those things so frequent in a lLBP1l you just stop noticing if they are there or not.
