Do prize baubles still matter?

Archive: 13 posts

What do you think? Do prize baubles still matter in community levels? Do you use them In your own creations? And if so, how much value do you invest in them?

I don't play a whole lot of levels, but the ones I do play I rarely see prizes in anymore. And if the rare cases, there are no more than two or three of them, often at the score board.

Perhaps the value of the level is the gameplay experience of the level itself and not the reward of finishing it. I like to think this. Besides, how much value can the contents of a prize bauble have if the level that gives it away is unsatisfactory?

I used to think that prizes were the main teaser for an audience to play your level, but over the course of LBP1 I quickly began to associate that with H4H spam that promises free this or that. On the other hand, I have seen a few levels that give away some nice surprises on completion; prizes that are fun or useful and often fit the theme of the level.

Discuss.

Actually I don't think that my stuff is cool enough to be given, and I know that I have some really cool talented friends that could help me if I need something.
So I don't collect prize bubbles.

I usually put in some goodies in my full levels, but not my mini-games. Just trinkets here and there. May not be anything anyone might use, but I like to give them something that may help inspire them or show how I built my object.

I didn't used to back in LBP1 for quite awhile since everyone had to deal with not only a smaller profile, but no way to not pick up community prizes. Now that we have those options... I started adding prizes back and love to put them in secret areas as a challenge to find them all.

I like hiding prizes, so yes!

Whether or not you give anything away, people inherently go for the big bubble with something in it. Generally this adds to the overall gameplay enjoyment in the level.

I was just considering this myself. I have a level that contains things people might actually want. I was going to put them throughout the level - my biggest issue is the impact the thermo, so, I may have to go with finding hidden "energy cells".

However, I don't use community made objects in my levels, so I typically bother collecting communist prizes. I think others may feel the same, so I wonder if its worth it.

Personally, I've always avoided collecting prize bubbles. Because of all the spam prize bubble levels that appeared in Lbp1, I always (unfairly) thought they were a tacky thing to give away.2011-09-13 17:42:00

Unless there's something very specific in a level I want, I usually have the "Collect Community Items" unchecked. I generally never have objects by other creators unless they're gifts.

I still believe they matter in many cases, but I only use them if I fool around in create.

I dont see the point in them unless its music or a sackbot. I dont really want to use someone else' work to show how good a creator I am. Logic is fine too. I use them but put no prize in them.2011-09-13 19:06:00

Yeah, mine were going to be costumes from the level, maybe a ship or two, maybe glitched creations I made, and even some special effects./logic. If thermo allows, I guess I'll do prizes, otherwise, they will be "energy cells".

Very much depends on the level/creator.

If its a random level you chanced and its not great, if I see prize bubbles ill actually try avoid them!!

If its a nice level, Ill pick them up out of interest or just for the fun of it...

Personally, Ive not done much with them myself, in my first (and only) LBP1 level I put in 3 prize bubbles (all *rubbish* I must admit and even though I was playing a total of 3 days I was well aware of this fact too ^_^). However, the point was to have it as an objective - but truthfully it doesnt matter much imo, unless a great creator is giving away something awesome of course. Similar story to my latest level, I made a few enemies, nothing special - but stuck them in vending machines at the end, since scoreboards are still a few weeks away I figured Id do it for fun anyway. Most wont care Im sure, but its an objective should you care to go for a nice score.

In LBP1 I collected a lot of community prizes, a lot! I guess I thought, "Oh I can use that" instead of going "I need to learn how to make that" I do like it when creators will put something in that I can take to create mode and see how they made it. I was really grateful when Compher put those "beta" versions in his Roller inc level. I won't use them in anything, but I looked at them and was able to figure out, "oh, you just put a tag sensor on there, ok, ok."2011-09-14 03:01:00

I learned to only give away prizes that people will actually want. I won't be giving prizes anytime soon. -___-'

Anyways, I usually uncheck "Collect Community Prizes?" because half of the time I get worthless junk. I only check that option if I'm playing a costume level, a tutorial level, or anything similar. : /

I am guilty of giving away prizes in at least one case, and I do very much like tutorial levels that both teach you how to do something and give you the completed thing, but for general "fun" level play prize bubbles are a total waste. I like the sound and collecting the big thingie, but I don't need what's in it. In fact I like the sound and feel of collecting a default-size prize bubble (empty) so much I make it my "fat point bubble" in levels. Collect it for 50 points or, now, I add logic so you get a big meaty 1000 points or so.

No prizes necessary though.
