SPOTLIGHTED!! Act 3-1: Otar

Archive: 19 posts

[/B]The next installment in my 5 act series is here. A little challenging, requires timing and patience. But I tried really hard to bring some original platforming to the table. Thanks for viewing.

Oh, can't wait to give this a shot! I loved the previous two Acts in your series. I've always had a thing for sky levels (and winter levels), so this oughta be fun.2011-09-12 04:27:00

The level is again impressive, very detailed and with a cool personal fresh look.
The contraptions are crazy and the gameplay is very cool, with lots of jumps, bounces and a dangerous envyronment that tries to kill you every 2 seconds.

The difficult is not based on the contraptions, but on the distance between checkpoints.
Keeping them so far from each other is a bit of a risk that you might want to consider.
Also the distance between checkpoints really make the experience with some other players significantly harder.
The casual player won't be back on your next levels if they get frustrated with this one.
And that would be a big pity.

Ok, now with the complaints.
I think you should have released the whole ACT-3 package all together.
Maybe it's just because I went through ACT 1 and 2 in a single, totally immersive continuos play.
So the lack of the mid cutscene, and the part 3 (that in act 1 and 2 was the most fast paced and frantic) left me with a bitter taste.
But that's just nitpicking.

Said that, it may seem that I didn't like the levels, but it's not true.
I LOVED it, I played it 3 times in 24 hours, though I really wanted to address some stuff that could put your level in danger with the great part of the community.
I really invite you to consider the difficulty and tweak it where possible, because this series is really a little gem that should be experienced and acknowledged by the greatest number of players possible.

Absolutely fantastic level. My second favourite of yours Alley Cat

When the level started my first thought was, this is visually impressive, but gameplay wise, nothing particularly special. But as the level progressed it built up more and more, in difficulty, scale and creativity, and by the end I had seen some amazing obstacles. Also the music fitted great, and you used the 3D glitch nicely, without overdoing it.

@Omegaslayer Yes I am going to add a few checkpoints its just going to take some time as I'll have rearrange some of the logic. So you won't have to backtrack as far. And the reason I didn't release the parts all at once is that I feel like asking people to play 3 levels at the same time is too much to ask when I have a hard getting them to play just 1.

@DaSpoony I'm glad you liked it bro, I really tried to be creative with the obstacles and do as much as I could by adding stuff that was basic in execution like the push stairs at the beginning and complex stuff like that the elevator that lowers you down or moving an entire room into the background.

Thanks to both of you for your support.

Another great addition to the level series, Alley_Cat_8863. It sort of reminded me of one of the dungeons of "Zelda Twilight Princess".

VISUALS:
The level looked absolutely amazing with detailed floating architects, awesome sky scenery, and very good use of objects that hasn't been used this much (What did you use to build the sky background?).

SOUND:
Festerd_Jester made such an awesome music for this level.

GAMEPLAY:
The obstacles are quite challenging yet unique. There's plenty of great use of grappling hook and bounce pads. The problems I encountered in this level are the spinning clouds that when I grabbed it and I didn't let go, I instantly died.

OVERALL:
An fantastic level with such detailed designs and radical gameplay. A yay and heart.

You have a good point about publishing one level at the time, but it's so cool, who doesn't want to play it?

@ Festerd_Jester No, thank you. I knew instantly that was the track that I wanted to use for my level as soon as it started. You and Weirdy Beardy are my two favorite musicians. Maybe in the future you wouldn't mind coming up with something just for me :-)

Oh, by the way thanks everyone who has given this post a gander. I have updated the level to make it a little less frustrating. Still has a little challenge to it. But in my opinion as long as there are infinite life checkpoints, a level is never really that difficult. Even Roller Inc 2 wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.

Hi Alley Cat, thought I'd join in on your F4F since I recently played your level. Also, because I got stuck:

How am I suppose to get up onto the platform above me? I love the momentum and flow of the obstacles in your level and I used my speed and momentum from the spinning wheel before this to throw me over to the yellow lever and landed on the corner to the right. No matter how many times I went back or committed suicide I could not get up. The bounce pad just before the yellow lever just bounces me downwards.

Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe it's something you missed in testing or the wide angle and width you have to swing throw? I noticed pulling the level activated the blue squares the move in, so it may be a good idea to possibility reset them if the player has not got up to the platform above me. But I just guessing as I'm not sure. So let me know as this level is visually astounding and has some really good obstacles and I would like to come back and play it through to the end if I can.

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes... in short. I had a little bit of trouble figuring that obstacle out too, but I figured it out pretty quickly; it just wasn't as intuitive as most of the other obstacles.

Try using the sponge part of the two way switch/lever to redirect the motion from the bouncepad upwards. It's a little tricky because the switch still moves back and forth, but it definitely works.

A challenging and unique level with some original ideas to bring platforming back into the series. The sky visuals were amazing! I felt like I was actually up 3000 feet in the air! Great background and great music to match a great platformer!2011-09-20 03:36:00

@JustinArt the background was made from bubble glass

@Foxdie84 Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed my level so much.
