Split-Screen

Archive: 6 posts

Split-Screen is a simple system, splitting multiple players into separate screens. Spit-Screen allows Versus mode to be played correctly without the screen-sharing issue embraced upon all local players. However, the problems with it limits its capability in LBP2, a highly detailed game.

Fixing the issues would require some graphical changes and adaptions. First of all, the effect rendering and anti-aliasing need to be optimized and reduced to increase performance in exchange for quality. By just halving the anti-aliasing, performance can double due to its nature of taxing the console's GPU heavily. The quality of effects could be reduced by removing extra options such as smoke rounding, an option that removes jagged edges from smoke effects, reducing visual quality for extra frames.

Moving pass the effect and anti-aliasing optimizations, shadows and textures also heavily influence the frame rate of the game. Shadows, like effects have an option for smoothing out jags, leading to frame drop with large amounts of objects on screen. Like shadows, textures lead to frame drop with multiple objects. With both options reduced, multiple objects on-screen during split-screen sessions would lead to a steady frame rate.

With all options merged together, the average frame rate of Little Big Planet 2 would more than double, giving extremely smooth game-play and enough optimizations to run split-screen flawlessly.

To allow split-screen, a player would need to enable it from the options menu, preparing their game for split-screen. Using it would allow at most 2 screens, limiting it due to the graphical limitations of the PS3.

(with shared screens being the default, as they always have been, and split-screen being an optional feature for the creation of levels). So creators would be allowed to toggle this setting, just as they are able to select between Standard or Versus scoring.

They should also be given the option to "force" same-screen gameplay for online players aswell, if they so wish. (for example in certain co-op levels or smash-bros style fighters)

I would love to have split-screen, my brother likes to go off and do things on his own and create on his own, so when we play together we could do things separately.2011-09-15 02:00:00

This may be a little off-topic, but I noticed some levels let you wander off in the opposite direction of the other players and you'll have a camera for yourself. You won't get offscreen and die after 5 seconds. How does this work, can you guys tell me? I've been wondering about it for a fairly long time.2011-09-15 16:28:00

Just set the level type to "Versus" mode.
