CRYSACK - crysis in LBP!

OK so although I made I thread about this a while back, the recent debut trailer for "Crysis on Consoles" got me thinking again. P.S. This is NOT A SHOOTER LEVEL!!! All gameplay is based on platforming (as well as clever use of sackbots) to enhance play.

-INTRO-

(For those who haven't heard, no 'Crysis' is not a typo... it is in fact an action FPS franchise which began on PC and is now beginning to make its way towards consoles. What makes this franchise unique is its use of a certain power-armour nicknamed the "Nano-Suit" which runs on a regenerating energy source and allows the user feats of extraordinary strength, speed, and more; which can be cycled through as Nanosuit "modes", each with its own unique properties.)

How would YOU feel about an advanced Crysis-based level in LBP2? You might think that other-game-based levels don't have much merit or receive much attention, especially the ones based on Mature games... but if you go to LBP1, one of the highest rated levels of all-time is LitteDeadSpace! But with this I hope to accomplish more than what was shown there.

In my LittleBigPlanet Crysis project, nicknamed '-CRYSACK-', my goal is to create a functioning "Nano-sack" Sackbot, capable of switching between powers on the go and thus giving the player various choices on approaching different scenarios. (More on Gameplay later)

-STORY-

I've decided not to set my level/level series on the islands - for the simple reason that sackbots cannot perform in water. Instead I plan to base my design either on New York or some other urban area. I am open to suggestions but the one idea that sticks out in my mind most prevalently is to set the time-frame between the Crysis 1 and Crysis 2, like a Crysis 1.5, which would fill up some of the gaps and help explain loose ends (perhaps with a touch of humour), such as the whereabouts of 'Nomad' (the protagonist from the first game) or by switching the names of the characters around, such as naming the leader "Profit" instead of "Prophet".

I have also thought of re-creating the first Crysis Expansion, under the parody title of "CRYSACK: WarThread", in which the player is in control of Sgt. Michael Sacks (aka: "Psacko")!

-GRAPHICS-

As a way of staying true to the original material, I will do everything in my power to put forward the best LBP2 has to offer visually. This includes varied use of dynamic lighting, as well as destructible fortifications and much more. Objects will be interactive, such as exploding barrels which can be hurled at enemies.

-GAMEPLAY-

Gameplay-wise, I wish to create a nano-sackbot 'system' which allows the user to change between nanosuit 'modes' on the go. The way I plan to do this is by way of emmitting a new sackbot over the old one when the user presses a designated button on the D-Pad. So for example if the user were to press "Up" on the D-Pad, the "maximum strength" sackbot would be emmitted and the old one destroyed... with the player having assuming control of the new one.

here is a video to show you what I mean in action:

And here is a diagram so you can see for yourself and understand what I mean in a better way:
(please note that the exact order is not final)

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8162/sackboyj.png

Where each button on the D-Pad corresponds with a given ability from the list below.
(similar to cycling through emotions on a regular sackboy, only with gameplay consequences)

NORMAL: aka "Armor"... The Default Mode. Sackbot is equipped with Paintinator and moves as normal.

STRENGTH: Sackbot has enhanced jumping abiltiy and is equipped with 'grabinators', which allow him to lift and throw heavy objects including crates and enemies.

SPEED: The Sackbot is given the power to move at high speeds (as reflected in the following video) but is neither equipped with a paintinator or gloves.

(Speed Demonstration Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yKya9ah2bM#t=9m47s)

STEALTH: Not sure on this one yet... but I have some Ideas. Suggestions are always welcome!

On top of this I would like to include two bars for the HUD, one for energy and another for health. Switching between modes would cost you energy, as would jumping in Strength mode or moving while in maximum Speed or Stealth (Stealth mode would drain energy constantly at a slow rate). Health would decrease whenever the player is hurt by an enemy, and slowly regenerate over time.

-FINAL REMARKS-

So what do you think..?

does this concept sound appealing to you, and what could be done in your opinion to improve it?

If/once this project begins to receive attention and garner support I'll begin serious work on it, and do my best to deliver on the final level.

Thanks for reading, and all feedback is appreciated!

Sounds like an awesome idea! The stealth mode does sound really tricky to pull off... I'll experiment & see what I can come up with. Concerning water in the level, I've actually made a hover-bot that can actually run on water, with some tweaking, which could actually work with the speed mode. Even though that doesn't fix the problem of sackbots with water, I guess you could "electrify" the water to justify why sakbots die after submerging into water.
Add my PSN ID: "Shuriken_Star" & put "LBPC" in the friend request so I can remember where it's from.

As far as the Stealth Mode, one idea I thought of would be to have an invisible material emmit in place of a sackbot, with movers and a controllinator attached in order to make it seem as if there were an invisible sackboy there. (the material could also be made hazardous for the first couple of seconds - like plasma - so as to destroy the preceding sackbot in such a way as to give a convincing 'transitional' effect)

But I haven't tested any of this, so I'm not quite sure if it's practical or no...

Oh, one thing I will definetely need help with tho is the Energy bar. (not sure if I'll include one or not but I would like to) atm I have no real idea how to create a holographic Life/Energy bar for the purposes of the Nano-Sack...

I know how to make a holographic life/energy bar, although I haven't played Crysis so I don't exactly know how it's supposed to look or work like (but I still know what it is). I also got a friend who already made a similar concept of a life/energy bar, although it was modeled after Metroid, so I'll ask him if it can be tweaked to work like Crysis. If not, I have no problem making it from scratch.

-GOOD NEWS-

First of all, I recently bought Crysis 2! ^_^
So I'll be playing around with that for abit, to learn more about Story, aesthetics, character costumes, etc. (as well as level design inspiration!)

Second of all, I've managed to create a working 4-part Sackbot system with features similar to that in the OP, including a concept for stealth (which partly works but which I still have to work on - I'll let you know after I test it some more).

Also, I was wondering whether I should release a "Nanosack" sackbot test level with a couple of obstacles for people to try out before creating the actual level.... or whether I should instead spend extra time in creating a more complete "Demo" level with AI enemies and a section of the level similar to what the the final thing will be like.

What do you guys think?

Is ANYONE interested in this project???

I took a break but I plan on starting again soon; although I'm not sure I will if I don't get any support from the other members. :/

If my ideas so far aren't quite satisfactory, can you atleast provide some feedback as to how I should improve them?

It story doesn't have to be Crysis, if people have a problem with basing levels off of other games...

I was taking a break but I'll be getting back to my PS3 again pretty soon, and my Sackbot is nearly finished so expect a Tech Demo. (probably a little after Christmas..?)

OK so although I still plan on finishing this sometime, the project has run into a bit of a hitch so far as logic (as well as a lack of Level Design ideas) due to the Logic becoming too advanced.

So I'm putting it temporarily on hold till I complete my other Project; an Action Shooter level based on the Killzone Franchise. This will give me some more experience with Sackbots and Logic which I can then transfer over to this project.

Meanwhile, you can check out the thread for my other level here:
