Some Spring Cleaning
Archive: 8 posts
I realize it's a little late for Spring, but maybe some Fall cleaning is in order. I check the "today's Birthdays" everyday to see if someone has a B-day and to wish that person a Happy B-day. It might be the only one they get that day and just want to do something nice, anyway, I've noticed that like 8/10 times the user has not been active for over a year or two and in some cases the user was active for only one day and that was the join date. A lot of forums I have belonged to past and present, do a "spring cleaning" All those old accounts get deleted. They'll send out an email stating that all accounts with no activity in the past year, will be deleted. I've had accounts deleted from many a forum over the years due to lack of interest or I just forgot about it. what do you think? Time for a clean up? | 2011-09-09 21:16:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Maaaaaaaybe, there are indeed alot of unused accounts, but sending E-mails to everyone of them is a huge task, which requires alot of effort. I think I also read something about accounts won't get deleted, but I'm not sure about that. | 2011-09-09 23:01:00 Author: nysudyrgh Posts: 5482 |
What about just deleting and if they try to enter for some reason the forum gives the message "your account got deleted because of inactivity". That happened to me once. | 2011-09-10 10:41:00 Author: gdn001 Posts: 5891 |
Good Idea! However what i there is some circumstance where, for example, Aya has to go and do work elsewhere and still want to be part of the site but cant get on the internet for a year. Wow I just realised how far-fetched that example is. Great idea though | 2011-09-10 11:05:00 Author: craigmond Posts: 2426 |
Maaaaaaaybe, there are indeed alot of unused accounts, but sending E-mails to everyone of them is a huge task, which requires alot of effort. I think I also read something about accounts won't get deleted, but I'm not sure about that. there are programs that send out automated emails to all members. You think Sony had one or two people sending out emails to all PSN members about the hacking? No. Someone typed up the first email and hit send to all users. I've also read that accounts don't get deleted, I think I saw Morgana post it somewhere. Why? This seems silly to me. Why have a thousand accounts cluttering up the system. What about just deleting and if they try to enter for some reason the forum gives the message "your account got deleted because of inactivity". That happened to me once. That's happened to me numerous times. I've joined so many forums over the years that sometimes I lose track or interest and they get deleted. I've gotten tons of emails saying that my account was deleted due to inactivity Good Idea! However what i there is some circumstance where, for example, Aya has to go and do work elsewhere and still want to be part of the site but cant get on the internet for a year. Wow I just realised how far-fetched that example is. Great idea though Where would Aya be going? The Earth's core? That's about the only place that isn't "connected" or "wired in" or maybe Aya could give account info to CC or a good friend and he/they could log in every couple of months to keep the account active. I just saw another one today, inactive 15 months. wished them happy b-day anyway. | 2011-09-10 14:06:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Interesting topic bio. I've also gone to inactive accounts after clicking on a user name at the bottom of the Main Forums page. I can only think of a couple of reasons why inactive accounts might be allowed to remain...i.e. Companies advertising on this site may just be looking at the number of user accounts to determine if they are going to spend money advertising here--20,000 + members compared to 2,000 actually active members. If this is a reason, the inactive accounts could still remain, but they could be flagged after a certain amount of inactivity time expires, so sever-side scripts looking at B-Days, etc., would not include these in any postings to the site. This selectivity could also be applied to the Community Member List, which would make it much easier to peruse. Many years ago I was the Admin for our Unix servers where I work, and we used "crons" that ran periodically to do just that...cleanup. | 2011-09-10 15:43:00 Author: RickRock_777 Posts: 1567 |

I feel ya bro Many years ago I was the Admin for our Unix servers where I work, and we used "crons" that ran periodically to do just that...cleanup. Yeah I was wondering if this site had this. Ah well, I did that on Steam and Playfire, after a whole year I revisited so maybe not deleting the account is the best solution. I thanked every post in this thread. That's how I roll. That's how I roll too. | 2011-09-10 23:08:00 Author: Roneranger Posts: 415 |
