What do you guys prefer? Magic mouths or subtitles?

Archive: 23 posts

Hey guys, I'm looking for a general consensus on what's more appealing to the LBP2 community in the case of reading texts for cutscenes and such:

1.The use of magic mouths, by this I mean you directly see/interact with the speech bubbles;
2.or just by looking at the subtitles below.

Sometimes in depends on the player's style, circumstance, etc.. but I'm just looking for a general trend towards these.

Thanks for your time.

It depends. If it is a guy talking, i would rather see a speech bubble coming from him, so I know WHO is talking. Now, a lot of levels dont do this, so i usually dont know who is talking. I think subtitles are more for voiced scenes or a thing like in a minigame for instructions. Just my 2 cents. ;P2011-09-08 00:01:00

Speech bubbles. Mainly cause I have the option whether to read it or not as I please. Subtitles can be confusing when it's a story and none of the actor's names are given.

That can be fixed of course, but I prefer bubbles anyway.

I also use both... although if I have to choose just one, it's subtitles. In situations where you MUST say something, it's important to have control over how long it displays, and generally I think players ignore or skip past a lot of speech bubbles. I sure do.2011-09-08 02:26:00

There's definitely a place for both options. Bubbles are often a nuisance when you're just passing through but if there is a lot of optional exposition the subtitles are insufficient. Bubbles are best for a situation where the player runs by, ignores the text, pauses, thinks "wait, what did that say?", and goes back to read it. Otherwise subtitles win for delivering a simple message in a timely fashion.2011-09-08 02:38:00

Defintley subtitles. To me, it just looks way more professonal. (Terrible spelling)2011-09-08 02:46:00

Subtitles look far from professional to me, as they're shown tilted differently each time. Magic mouths help me to see who's saying what. Subtitles are best suited for narrator text.

Also, there's similarity with the skippable cutscenes thread. IMHO it's preferable to leave the choice of skipping dialogue up to the player. Magic mouths (especially without camera) let you do that.

As a general rule of thumb, subtitles for cutscenes, magic mouths for gameplay - I am a player who tends to skip past dialogue if it's optional, but I think subtitles are more fitting for cutscenes. Magic mouths in gameplay all the way though

One thing I do really hate is when people use a subtitle without the black surround given by a locked cutscene camera (one that doesn't allow use of a controller) - Those things are darned hard to read without the black surround!

that's why you have those nifty little red squiggly lines under words you misspell, so that you can right click on them and click the correct spelling of said word.

what rialrees said, mouths for gameplay, subtitle for cutscenes. Although, I am using magic mouths for a cutscene because it is of two characters having a conversation.

Subs always. Unless the background makes it unreadable..

Speech bubbles are so LBP1.

Subtitles look cooler but personally I often miss them if not expecting them. If we could choose font weight and size that'd be ideal since they can be hard to make out as CYMBOL wrote.2011-09-08 15:44:00

I use both. I noticed I use subs for menus and tutorials and mouths for dialogue. One thing that I have seen people do in levels that is incredibly annoying is put a mouth next to a controlinator or level link making that controlinator or level link completely unusable -_- anyone else see people do this?2011-09-08 17:05:00

I only noticed it in noob levels.
to fix that. avoid noob levels
but I have to question why they did it to start with?
don't anyone play test their level before uploading it? (0.o)

*facepalm* I totally want to take my vote back now. I remembered all the problems I used to have with speech bubbles back then. Especially on levels where there are more than one on the screen. If you accidentally hit circle while a character is explaining something...well let's just say good luck trying to read the specific bubble you missed. It's near impossible cause there's always this single one that you keep reading.

Subtitles all the way...whoo.

From a player perspective...

I think subtitles most definitely have their place in Movie segments and non-character related Level Intros, but not always in Level instructions and game play tutorials, unless the player has the ability to review the information at will.

Mouths seem perfect for player-character interaction and banter between characters--your attention is immediately drawn to the speech bubble.

However...either could be beneficial if panning long distance between camera scenes, such as between kingdoms or forces at odds with each other (i.e. battle cries or taunting)--hopefully the creator would be using a unique voice for each , otherwise this could create confusion.

Subtitles ANNIHILATE magic mouths any day of the week, but now with the extra bubble for names on magic mouths, they look a lot better than before. 2011-09-11 01:20:00

Hmm.
I think subs are better for movies/intros, but otherwise (when they are used correctly(hate when they overlap!)) magic mouths for me.
Cause, ya know, skippable!

oh my god i cant believe you people skip speech bubbles if optional. there not there to be skipped there there to be read. sheesh. i like to use a clever bit of both. the speech system that lets you read in your own time is comfortable and i really like it. subs for narration and speech bubbles for.... well speech
overall, i think subs if possible but seriously speech bubbles are a nice tool and i would use them.

I hate the magic mouths.
One of the reasons I've yet to publish a LBP2 level - is because the Magic Mouths keep glitching on me.
I've Get Satisfactioned the issues - but they only seem to want to suggest work arounds (that are unworkable) rather than having the mouths work the way they should.

Bloody annoying!

I think I recently got a mouth glitch too. Activating it made the screen turn into a movie camera and it wouldn't stop unless I started flying mode in create. I made it a subtitle in a sequencer and the problem got solved.

As a player I prefer subs but I'm not fussed if people prefer to use mouths. As a creator it's subs ever since I got my hands on them. It never used to but that little beep that comes with the magic mouths really grates on me now.2011-09-12 00:13:00

Thanks for the insight, guys.

I kind of agree to the idea that Speech Bubbles reeks of the LBP1 levels (not saying its a bad thing), and subtitles do feel more appropriate for LBP2 levels.
But with the new update, speech bubbles being able to display the name of the speaker, they seem to be fresh again, and I'm kind of leaning on using them as oppose to subtitles. Im still gonna test both of them and just use which one feels more natural.
