i've been looking for a good way to flesh out my levels before powering up LBP. granted LBP is itself an editor but i find it a little bit daunting to jump right in to start outlining my level layout with the LBP interface. i prefer a more versatile and simpler interface to make quick sketches. i tried pen and paper for a while but that just didn't capture the scale and how everything fit together. i tried using a simple paint program on a computer in which i could have an infinitely large canvas but the 2d nature felt too limited. but i think i finally found the way to go (for me at least). Google SketchUp. it's a free 3d design software similar to Maya (i was a computer science major with a graphics focus so played around with Maya a lot) and while you have to invest a bit of time learning at least the basics of the interface, i think it shall greatly help me to fully flesh out ideas. i find it very helpful to be able to zoom out and view from any angle. i thought i'd share in case it proves helpful to anyone else. if enough people become familiar with it, we could also save files and share them back and forth when describing ideas. i know i know, you can do this with LBP itself so it seems silly to add another step, but for me it works better for level design (not contraption creation though). you can download it here for free http://sketchup.google.com/download/ here are some sample images of the beginning of a level i just mocked up. this particular instance was really helpful t be able to fully rotate around to get a sense of how i wanted it to work. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/bstychild/LBP/Sketchupexample2.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/bstychild/LBP/Sketchupexample1.png i hope some people find this helpful or at least fun (i love this stuff). i'd love to hear people's thoughts. | 2008-12-22 14:39:00 Author: Conall-Star Posts: 157 |

Google Sketchup is very very good for plotting architectual ideas: in LBP, levels are practically architecture! | 2008-12-22 16:03:00 Author: DrMelon Posts: 51 |
I've used a program that looks similar to this before, called 3dsMax, but it's really complicated. I'll check this out. | 2008-12-22 18:23:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
