How difficult is it to get in to Mm?

Archive: 25 posts

Don't laugh, please. This is a serious question.

I've kind of been planning a trip to be with someone I know in the UK for a little while now. Tonight we both realized that he lives just outside of Guildford, home of Media Molecule.

Are they pretty lenient with visitors, or would I actually have to have a reason to drop by? I'd assume at the very least I'd need to schedule something, but even then... I don't know.

It's really more of an after thought. Any time inside would be cool, but it is a business so it's very reasonable for them to say I can't come in. It's not like I'm an amazing creator either...

tl;dr:

Probably going on a trip really close to guildford, wondering if there's any way I can get in to Mm with a friend just to take a tour or some nonsense for an afternoon. If not then it's not life changing, but as I said, it'd be pretty cool if I could get in.

I'm not sure if this even makes sense. I've never heard of people just waltzing in before for no reason, but hey, no harm in asking, right? Better to ask and be told no than to go and go on wondering what could have been.

This is probably something you should be messaging people about, so that the right people see it. People like comph of gevurah, who actually know the people and everything. The mojority of people who will see this thread will probably not be quite as helpful.2011-09-03 14:00:00

Yeah, contacting people who had the opportunity to visit them would be a good idea. Ask them about how available to visitors the studio is, if they had to visit them at a specific hour, the degree of casuality they have with visiting fans... I mean, it's MM, and looking in their blog they look like a relaxed and friendly studio but it's good to know about that.

Have many people visited MM? For what I read, the "Touching Royalty" pin consists of high-fiving Alex Evans IRL, and considering how many creators I've seen with that pin, I guess they have had quite a few visitors.

Well, first you have to figure out what security system they've got installed. Once you know that, you're going to need the correct equipment. eBay offers a lot. I suggst you go around 1-3am, likely no-one will be there....2011-09-03 19:55:00

If I remember correctly from my last visit:

The window on the far right first floor (street side) has a faulty latch so you can slide it open presuming that you brought you bog-standard lock-picking kit. Then it's just a simple matter of dodging the human-sized sackbots they have patrolling the place.

Interesting things to visit while you're there:

Fridge - Level 1 (someone called Spiff or something leaves a fish finger sandwich in there for the next day)
"The Vault" - Level B24

No, not the fridge, it's a trap! They have a frickin' camera in the fridge (http://www.mediamolecule.com/blog/article/fridge_cam_the_first_two_weeks/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MediaMoleculeBlog+Media+Molec ule+Blog)!

If you're up to it I suggest you get to the roof of the adjacent building and zip on the energy line over MM' studio, dropping on their roof just when you zip over it. After that you just have to break in directly into the upper level, avoiding all the security in the ground floor. Don't forget to bring a couple of aerosol sprays to use on the air and detect lasers and various marbles to throw on the floor and activate the hidden boobytraps beforehand.

While you're there bring as many fallen hair and other pieces of DNA you can, so I'm able to clone my own team of creative geniuses

Wow, they actually took a picture (http://mediamolecule.com/images/assets/fridgecam/201108/fridgecam02.jpg) of me sneaking in at night! D:

I'm too pretty to go to jail!

Well that was rather misleading, I thought you meant how to get into Mm as in to get a job with them.
If you meant how to visit the Mm building, then I got no idea. xD

I'd definitely go there and leave my application if that meant I could get a glimpse of the studio
Even though I have no work experience and no academic or professional reason whatsoever I should work in the game industry.

Not to encourage further off-topica...lity, but it seems now (or a few weeks ago) is a prime time to be getting into games in Europe.

Tarsis Studios was hiring for LBP Vita with a few caveats - you have to relocate (no problem for ambitious younguns) and you have to be cracking good at turning ideas into good levels. While Tarsis =/= Media Molecule it's a great in for people eager to be involved in the franchise, which presumably folks would be. Do good by Tarsis and you've got dialogue with Mm by default. They're in business together for that game and potentially more like it as Mm explores new franchises.

I've always seen the game world as being supremely inaccessible, far more so than breaking into film or music entertainment, both of which I've had a passing connection to (which is probably why they don't seem so impossible). I guess it's because I know poop cack about programming, which has got to be a basic requirement, right?

Anyway everyone who has ever played a video game would likely leap at the chance to "be in the biz" with many more aggressively aiming for it, so that's a lot of competition. While at the same time the entry level position of tester or QA guy seems a go-nowhere type thing that old codgers like me wouldn't qualify for even if we volunteered to do for free. Just too old. Old guys need not apply. We'll get wrung out in a hurry.

Back on topic:
I'll bet my LBPC XP you can show up unannounced to Mm's offices and get a brief friendly tour -- but if it were me, I'd show up dressed business-casual and only talk to the secretary, establishing that I know how to get there, that I respect chain of command. Quickly state your interest ("I love you guys; I'm visiting from X; can I come back at a time of your choosing with a gift box of everyone's favorite donuts to shake a hand or take a photo?") and you might even end up with better access than you hoped for. Definitely follow through on those donuts tho!

Not to be nitpicky, but the studio is actually called Tarsier

And regarding paying Mm a visit; when I visited them back in May, they said that we should just stop by if we were ever in Guildford again, and I would think that invite can be extended to every devoted fan in the LBP community?
You might not get to "see where the magic happens", but I think you can at least shake a few hands and maybe even high-five certain important employees

Ooh, or you could get into a sackboy suit. Now that's real infiltration

1-Put on a Sackboy Suit
2-Go to the Studio
3-Say you're here because they called, said they wanted someone to play the mascot in some event that doesn't really exist
4- The reception send you to talk with someone in the studio. Take a good look around and watch them arguing confusedly "Is this serious? Did someone here really call for a mascot? Have [insert name here]'s pranks gone too far?"

Really, well to be honest Media Molecule seems like the company that would open their doors to anyone.
