Three New Projects From a New Forum Member

Archive: 10 posts

Hey there boys and girls, just joined the site after noticing so many talented creators hang their hats here. Just wanted to say I'm happy to have hopped aboard with LBPC and hopefully my stay here will be long and productive.

Onto the ideas:

So I had three different projects in mind and I've listed them below.

-A card game. Similar to the old school Pokemon cards or Magic the Gathering cards. I'm not suggesting we snag their ideas or anything, but I'm just using those games as an example for what type of game-play I had in mind. The creation process could go in any number of ways and we could get very creative when making these cards, but I'm sure the end result of this project will be very noteworthy as I haven't seen many levels, or any for that matter, like this one.

-A RTS (Real Time Strategy) game. Possibly even a series of levels. I've had this idea in mind since I started creating on LBP2 and it's something I've already done an extensive amount of work on. I've even got several unit models (top-down, of course) that are animated in how they attack (if you've ever played "Starcraft: Broodwars" think of the Zealots or zerglings and how they swing their arms). I was thinking of making the level a 2v2 level in which players each control their own kingdoms and instead of creating their own units, each "Special Building" (like city building) gets a set number of units spawned per x amount of time (this system would help with thermo issues). Once a capitol building is destroyed, that area spawn no longer works. Each player will have several spawns along with several heroes. I would like to do this project more than the other two, fyi.

-A Top-Down RPG (with an apocalypse theme). I've already put work into this (mostly just set up leveling & stat systems, motion controls with wireless switches for buttons and a collision detection system, and some animations. I still have a lot of work on this project, but I'm in no rush since my first priority is the RTS.

So if anyone is interested or would like further details on any of these, I'd be happy to share.

Some very awesome ideas, especially the last two!

One suggestion...once you have identified your team members, you should create a Private Group to discuss the details of the project...just saying .

I wish I had time to help, but I have 2 contests I'm doing levels for, as well as my level "The Obligon". Good luck though.

I would reaally love to see a card game go up, feel like it would be a very replayable level, especially with randomized decks.
Agree with the private group thing. There are creators that, if they wanted to, may steal your ideas before you can make them yourself.

Also, good to see you join the site, if you ever need a custom signature or avatar picture, let me know, Im good with photoshop.

Thanks for the advice guys. The way I feel about people who steal ideas is: if they're not creative enough to come up with their own ideas, they're not going to be very successful in the long run. But I totally see where you're coming from, which is why I did leave a lot of detail out of this thread.

Too bad you can't lend a hand Rick, but I understand. I'll at least send you a friend request on PSN and if you need any help with your contest levels, or help testing, I can lend my hand. I'm pretty good with debugging and logic related issues, afterall anything can be fixed or tweaked with enough effort and time put into it.

Clayton, I'd be more than happy for an avatar. I've never been great at making them, though I'm pretty decent with photoshop. If you have one laying around feel free to post it up and I'll snag it for my avatar and give you credit for it. I'm not too picky so anything you've got will work. Thanks for the offer. If you need help with anything feel free to give me a shout.

@zemurdarah...thanks for the request. I will accept next time I'm on PSN.

And thanks for the offer to help. I'm "fairly" competent in those areas--check my blog sometime for some additional personal info about me--but I sometimes lack in coming up with ideas for gameplay. My biggest issue is I'm a perfectionist, and tend to try and create levels that all age groups can enjoy, but this is almost impossible without letting some players down, and that creates a dilemma for me. This time around I will be creating something that I will enjoy playing, and let the cards fall where they may.

I could definitely use your help Beta Testing, and would like to return that favor to you as well. I'll let you know when I'm at that stage, but will most likely invite you in to see what I have sooner than that to get your perspective.

If they're not creative enough to come up with their own ideas, they're not going to be very successful in the long run.
Perfect quote. Unfortunately, with the seemingly random respect players have for levels (eg, cool pages), you're going to find that creativity is not enough to warrant success. It's never stopped me though .

Oh, and my personal opinion. Card game all the way. I've never seen one done before. Also, I think that remaking games that require you to be with the other players in a form that allows them to play it from wherever they want (eg: Chess that just got Mm picked) works great.

Part of the reason why I decided to make a Risk game, and why a card game would be nice to see.

If possible, make different types of card games. Keep them simple games though (eg: War, solitaire, etc) unless you're looking for a very small audience.

It's true, I'm actually rather depressed by what I see on the "cool pages" often. It's just... -sigh- I don't sugar coat things, that doesn't get you anywhere. They don't deserve it whatsoever.2011-09-03 04:42:00

In response to the "Cool Pages" comment, I completely agree. It's actually very frustrating every time I go check out that area and see nothing but "Free give-away" and "H4H" levels. I wouldn't even really consider them levels half of the time, since there isn't even game play involved in most of them.

The card game aspect does need polishing, really. I haven't quite decided how I want to go about it yet. I tried to have a 80 card selection where you could build decks of 50 cards each (logic would then shuffle your decks and you would be dealt your first hand). Card types would be spells and creatures. But I ultimately had to scrap that because all of the logic involved was pushing the thermo well into the 60% area and I hadn't even finished the level half way yet. So I do need to figure out a better system. The good thing about a level like this would be the limited use of material (pretty much only need two or three materials and a butt-load of stickers) to actually make it.

If I were going with a "War"-like game I could just have players receive a random card every time and implement a system which limits the odds every one card appears already (using randomizers and selectors). It wouldn't be too thermo consuming to go about it that way. I guess I just need to flesh out how I want to go about the actual theme and game-play and then start working with the cards, etc. But the card game is something that I see being quite the success if promoted properly.

I was even thinking of another way in which I excluded a draw process, but instead had players select from a group of like 30-50 cards. They then could play any of the cards at any point they wanted (as long as it was during their turn and they met what other limitations I put in place). This way the game could have a bit more strategy involved, but this idea is pretty cut-and-dry. I need to figure out how to implement it and actually create a fun game out of it.

Decisions decisions. Haha

I had sorta same idea, a card game, but not gameplay, a show like most card games have.

Here is link, I called it the card game urion for some reason
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=62610-Too-many-ideas.-I-need-voice-actors!!!!!!!!
So here is my proposal, we both work together on card game.

We think of creatures and other cards, then we plan on episode, I'll publish the show, where as you can publish the actual game, as i think the game will get more plays)

Read the plot of urion, tell me what you think, name is defo up for changing.
