Music Creation: Frustrated, Please Help!

Archive: 8 posts

Thanks for a warm welcome.

1: Seems very complicated just getting the music sequencer up. Knowing me, I'm probably making it harder than it needs to be. Am I missing something?

2: Is it possible to save music files as MP3's? I realise this is probably just wishful thinking, but being able to save my tunes for to copy to my iPod or burn to a CD would be awesome. Failing that is there anyway to copy tunes to use outside of the game?

3: Is the Music DLC worth getting and are there any user levels worth playing for new samples / instruments?

Man I miss Music 2000...

I don't understand what you mean by not being able to get the sequencer up.

Any way, as far as the music pack, are you talking about the one for LBP1? I wouldn't bother with that one.

As for recording, nope, no official way to do it. You could record it manually with your IPOD or phone, but that's probably the best your going to get.

There are a few things I've learned after about eight months of playing around with the music sequencer. Of course what you find most useful depends a lot on what type of music / effects you're going for, but here's some main ideas to remember: 1) adding reverb and swing can be very useful, 2) the volume sliders keep overlapping tracks under control so it isn't just competing sounds, 3) experiment with timbre using the right analog on notes, and 4) placing another instrument over a pre-made sequence of notes will change them to said instrument (e.g.: you have a section of a piece in piano, but want it in harp. Just place the harp icon over the piano sequence). Sorry if you already knew all that lol, but there really isn't much more to it. From there, it's really just a matter of placing the notes.2011-09-02 23:39:00

It does seem very similar to Music 2000 in some respects, but it's a real pain trying to get my head around it all. Everything I press seems to send me back to the poppit. Anyway, decided to spend all weekend getting to grips with it and trying not to rush at it.2011-09-03 00:19:00

You can record your music if you've got the right tools:

PS3 to PC/Mac

Tools:
1) RCA cable

2) RCA to 1/8th stereo inch combiner

3) Software to record sound input
(I use "Cooledit" but there are many options)

Connecting the white/yellow RCA outputs from your PS3 to the 1/8th headphone jack, which in turn goes into your PC/Mac's headphone input (or other, if you have it). Then use your preferred software to record the song while it plays in real time on the PS3.

If you're aware of this technique please don't take offense at my basic advice. If this isn't explanation enough, and you want to try it, let me know and I'll add details. But directly saving songs to MP3 on the PS3 is not possible. Sorry!

Music 2000 was a dedicated erm... music software based completely on 100ths, if not 1000nds, sampled instruments and 100ths of features where music sequencer of LBP seems like a kids toy compared, and most of its few sounds ermm... sound like general midi ones from the past.
In a field where music today is that sound matters more and note arrangement less, LBPs sequencer cant be but fail miserably although exelently serves its purpose inside the game itself since they patched the loop problem. lol

I completely understand the need of the programmers to make it as much accessible by the most people, kids included and intended, but the sound choice is terrible as some instruments sound cleaner than other and a few others are unmanageable in a way that needs you to be a sound producer to make something of them.

Aside of its many drawbacks there are ways to make the instruments, music and overall sound different or more human, but this requires skill and/or experimentation and a ton of time waste unless the newly announced instruments of move pack will make any difference, which i doubt.

Lowdown, you better head to PC for a dedicated music package. ; )
