Getting Levels at least Noticed

Archive: 11 posts

I've been noticing that levels people post in like, one day get about 300 plays, my first Dreamscape level took over two months to get 21 plays. So how am I supposed to get my levels noticed enough???2011-08-31 13:02:00

Luck. There's things you can do to improve your chances; post it in the level showcase, put a link to it in your signature, ask 5000 questions in the help forum while making it, anything you can do to put it in people's minds that they want to try it when it gets published. In the end, though, it takes pure luck.2011-08-31 13:07:00

Yeah i have done all those things and it has taken at least 4 months for my favourite levels to get to 200 plus plays were as some crappy levels get 3000+ in two days.
Its obviously just about luck and getting the name of your levels out there for people to see.

I would suggest also once you publish a level tell everyone you know about it and hope they test it out to try to get it into the cool pages. This worked with my Bioshock Demo level.

There have been tons of these threads and I would say 99% of them have the same issues.

First off your level is not posted in the Level Showcase. How would anyone know to play it? Hmmmm?

Post your level in the Level Showcase. Make a great description and use tons of pics to show off your creation. Level Badge and title are also important things. Check out one of my most recent threads as an example (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=54338-Space-Escape-Pinball). Use the F4F option and by that I mean do it proactively. Go play OTHER F4F levels in the showcase and leave detailed and constructive feedback that will help that creator make their level better. THEN and ONLY then, ask them to play your level to honor their F4F.

Repeat that process until your fingers feel like they will fall off.. seriously!! Not everyone will honor their F4F, or possibly are on vacation, or you catch them when horribly busy, so it takes volumes of work to get the feedback you need to help improve your creation.

This does two things.. not only are you getting some feedback, but you are also building a network of friends, especially if you are talented. This helps quite a bit on your next creation especially.

Also notice I said IMPROVE your creation, not PLAYS. Plays are rubbish.. you want feedback. You want really concerned thoughtful creators with a keen eye to give a hard look at what you do to help you improve. Why? Because if your level is meh.. you will gain a reputation of that and not many will want to flock to see your next level.

Think of it like if you were in a band. Everyone thinks playing a gig is easy.. it sure is! Playing a gig and amazing the crowd rather than them booing you off the stage is a whole other level of commitment. It takes hard work and tons of practice to get good enough to where you can play a gig and folks WANT to show up to your next gig. Same thing with level creation...

Sorry to say, but those that are good, get noticed, and create a following. Think about some of your favorite creators and think about how much hard work they put in not only to that level, but from the time they first entered create mode. It ain't easy!!

Yes there are terrible levels that are on LBP that for some reason get tons of plays... but they usually promise all sorts of things or cheapie bomb survival, kill some pop star, or whatever the latest trend that attracts really young players that might still be in diapers. Hopefully you aren't looking for that. lol

Good luck!

On the whole it's down to luck. First make sure you have a really good level obviously, then when you get ready to publish try and get as many of your friends to yay and heart straight away and also start playing the level. Reason is, the filtering system for cool levels apparently works that way, and once you get a little bit of attention it creates a snowball effect. Note though I haven't tried this method, this is just the usual advice people give aside the advertising one. The time to post is generally better when busy, though I suppose you could look at it as when quiet there's less competition with fewer levels being posted. I just thought jwwphoto's desereved a little thanks for that wall of text he most likely spent half an hour writing.

lol... Actually I am pretty fast at typing, but thanks!

I just find that most that are new here or those that start wondering and sometimes even complaining about plays never realize the tools and opportunities that are here at LBPC. That is IF they are willing to do the work.

I've been posting the links to good but fairly unkown levels I find here (both in showcase and spotlight) in Eurogamer Portugal's forums so that the people there add it to their lists and get to play them (they're not inclined to spend as much time and effort as I to find good levels). A dozen people or so have already promised to play my level as soon as I publish it as thanks 2011-08-31 22:42:00
