Creator help: illusion of flight

Archive: 10 posts

I am working on the next challenge for my Blue Moon Mice series, but have come across a problem.

The goal is to have Sackboy stationary, but give the illusion that the background is moving downward behind him. I've had limited success with dropping very thin pieces of cardboard using emitters, but cannot control the speed of the drop. Plus the drop rate is erratic as pieces further down the stack disappear.

I tried rollers, but could not successfully get the cardboard to fit in between them.

Now I'm working on some machinery to lower the pieces, but that has not been very successful because the pistons are just too weak.

Do any of you have ideas to share? I would certainly appreciate any input!

Try multiple pistons (set on stiff) and with the same settings between them, hooked up at different points along the thin material. I did something like this in one of my beta levels (look up ConfusedCartEU; I think there's a mine-esque level on there somewhere), and it looked as if the elevator was going down when in reality it was going up.2008-12-21 21:03:00

I couldn't find your mine level, but I believe I can imagine what you describe. However, I need something that can keep going on for several minutes, so the background can keep scrolling if the player takes longer than expected.2008-12-21 21:46:00

Play Little Dead Space for an idea on how to do it...2008-12-22 17:42:00

The effect in Little Dead Space is very nice, and similar to what I'm trying to do, but it runs for only a short time. I stumbled on Little Big Galaga, which is much more like what I am looking for.

Not knowing how to build something is worse than having writer's block!

No idea if this would work either, but how about a massive rotating wheel of thin cardboard, with the background picture you want around the edge. If the wheel is big enough and the camera on sackboy close enough the background might look like it's coming down vertically, rather than at the slight angle of the wheel rotation.2008-12-23 19:43:00

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

I finally have the level up - it's called Blue Moon Mice Rocket Science Lab, but is locked because it is third in a series. You have to start with the level Blue Moon Mice Take to the Sky to reach it:

I'm not 100% satisfied with the illusion, but felt it was good enough to publish.

The solution was to drop very large (larger than the normal viewable area) and very thin cardboard. Each piece has triangles cut out down the side to make "teeth" sort-of. The pieces drop down a long shaft lined with glass on both sides. At the bottom are star-shaped cogs on motor bolts which engage the teeth on the cardboard. The bolts have their tightness loosened just a bit.

The result is that pieces are emitted from the top and fall to the bottom, and finally stack on each other. The star-cogs keep everything moving down at a reasonably slow pace, and the pieces have a lifetime that let the just barely go beyond the bottom of the cogs.
