Getting more plays?
Archive: 4 posts
I know this has been brought up before, but I have a sort of specific version of this question. I have published a level that is doing well. It's getting around 10 unique plays a day; granted that's not huge, but it's good for me. It's also hitting around 45% heart rate, and nearly 75% likes with no dislikes yet (i'm sure they will happen though). Even though the play count is low, many of the people counted played at least twice. I'm not trying to say it is the greatest level ever, but so far the response has been overwhelmingly good. I'm very pleased with the reaction so far, and am happy. How would you guys go about getting more plays on something like that, or would you just let it roll organically? | 2011-08-28 09:08:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
Mostly I just let it roll. Seems to me that you're doing everything right (good title, a description, a f4f thread with description and pics) so all you can do now is hope that it catches on. If it were me, I would think about coming up with a flashier level badge but that's about it. | 2011-08-28 23:47:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
As usual succinct and solid advice from Sehven! I go through mild panic attacks when releasing a new level, because of the inevitable Boos. I have a thin skin despite knowing better. It kills me to receive a Boo when there's less than 10 Yays in the early cycle, and I will promote and work to avoid that, or even delete the level and republish with a new advertising approach. Once I break 10 Yays I tend to let the level go. That's how I did until recently, anyway, when it took 3-4 days for a new level to get even a few plays. For my most recent level, a friend Tweeted it and I created a thread in the Showcase forums on LBPC. I pushed it harder than anything before it, right when it released. It got onto page 4 of the cool pages, according to that friend, and in a few weeks has now broken 300 plays. That's a massive success for me, after six months of virtual nothing, and in that same time my next-popular level has reached 270-odd plays, most of which came from people who found me through promotion of the most recent one. I'm pleased as punch... except for those Boos, yeah! With higher and sudden plays on the new level comes my worst Yay:Boo ratio yet. For "quality" plays, i.e. plays from people I respect or who provide insightful feedback, I just let those come by being a quality contributor myself to hither and thither levels found through LBPC. I ditched the advertising for my latest level from my signature after about 7 days of publication, too. Plays will come if they come, and I'll go at it again when my next level launches. ... but for me it's all about that nervous tight-chested first few days of getting to 10 Yays. EDIT/UPDATE In specific response to your question, as you're getting a steady, happy 10 plays a day, I'd say let it roll. Further promotion won't help the algorithm for getting onto cool pages any more than it's already doing. However, for quality plays by fellow creators, you're doing it all right. Maybe a date added to your signature, if photos are too much of a bother? People here like to help out, and a note like "(New! Published Aug. 25)" can be more powerful than any summary or request to play it, since we all know the rhythm and importance of getting early, positive plays for that snowball effect. | 2011-08-29 05:56:00 Author: Unknown User |
Thanks guys, that all makes sense. Thanks for the advice on the level pic sehven. I'll do that next time I am in LBP. Arbiekko, I know completely what you mean. When creating we have complete control. We have some control in what we do to promote initially. That letting go part after you've done all you can is very hard to do, but it's exciting at the same time. I dread the negative responses too. With 37 plays, 24 yays, 14 hearts, and 0 boos in 4 days, it's hard to complain. Those stats are minor compared to what I see from some people, but for my first LBP2 level, I'll count it as a win. I keep thinking there is something more I need to do, but maybe I just need to learn to let go. EDIT-is there a bug with image links in the forum? | 2011-08-29 06:58:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
