If games like COD and Uncharted can handle matches with 10+ ppl without much lag...

Then why cant LBP handle 4 people in a party without experiencing intense lag in levels. Thats the one thing that kills this game. Those complicate 4 player versus levels, most of them, are nearly unplayable most of the time with 4 people.....2011-08-27 05:14:00

My guess is the COD and Uncharted levels are optimised very well, as opposed to an LBP level, with all of that logic and calculations. IDK though. ;P2011-08-27 05:17:00

Those games also most likely have a completely dedicated server. Your party in LBP depends upon the hosts connection, and everyone's PS3's.2011-08-27 05:22:00

Yes, LBP uses a p2p connection. That is why you can play with friends even if the servers are down, you don't rely on them. It is a direct connection to the other players. This isn't always the best system but Mm's servers would need to be much larger to accommodate 10,000's players online constantly and the 5,000,000+ levels.2011-08-27 06:18:00

Whoa, what? I can play with friends without the LPB network...... what an age we live in!

(seriously didn't realize that, thanks)

I Imagine with dedicated servers we could reach quite high player counts, especially in play mode, but that would mean a significantly reduced ability to actually play those online levels. Now if we could set up our own dedicated server to play on, ooh boy, that'd be awesome. PS4...? We'll see. TBH, I'd buy another system if it meant I could make my own server. One which I could modify, similar to PC.

Connection quality matters a lot with a P2P system (I'm guessing, since the "Manage Players"-screen shows people being connected to each other); with 4 players, it becomes way more difficult to maintain a stable connection with everyone (high ping/speed problems when using other players as a proxy, occasional WiFi hiccups for me, unstable bandwidth with family members sharing the connection, etc).

The optimization also matters. Unlike with CoD (at least, I have tried it but never really liked it), LBP2 levels with high lag usually contain heaps and mounds of complicated physical objects that cannot be easily optimized (logic is *way* easier to get to run quickly and precisely, graphics/music are probably more memory-intensive). With physical objects, one has to calculate so many different values that it will start taking a toll with high amounts of said objects.

Also because COD and Uncharted, and other popular online games, have prebuilt maps that are already on the disc (or in the game data if DLC).
LBP Levels instead need to be loaded from the servers and then the PS3 needs to process them on the RAM, which may take a toll on lag.

And COD and uncharted have different game engines than LBP so they don't experience lag as much.2011-08-27 14:55:00

Not only is the connection' quality up to the game's host, Uncharted and Cod's maps are made to be loaded easily and quickly into the PS3's RAM. The textures, the sounds, they are all designed to be loaded and without spending too much memory. That's called "optimization", and being able to create and publish whatever the hell you want is the total opposite of that. That's why it's wise to maximize your thermo usage by using the least materials and decorations possible, just like game developers don't use different textures for the same kind of surface when they can just reuse them.2011-08-27 16:05:00
