My Latest Concept: The Containment Harness (With picture)

It's basically a helmet that slows you down and prevents you from jumping.

sounds like fallout 3 haha

but yea good idea so you escape then you just keep running but with no jumping that means no platforming so this is going to be hard !

what do you plan to do?

It is inspired by Fallout. I'm going to have a big boss at the end similar to:

The huge robot at the end of Fallout

The harness will be removed about a third of the way through the level. I also have some other surprises planned.

This looks promising Killian. I am a big Fallout fan and if you could do something similar to what you mentioned (don't want to spoil here) then that would be pretty incredible. It actually gets brought down and then dropped. It's attached to some things on the layer behind it (which the player can't see) to hold it in place which gives the illusion that it's a heavy helmet.

Bravo! But I think that there may be a potential problem.

The helmet will not be able to go onto all three dimensions, only one, so platforming is impossible.

Yeah the part with the helmet is only on the front layer unfortunately. Another issue is that when I try really hard I can get out of it by jumping and squirming.

Hmm... that is an issue. I'm not sure how you could solve that, perhaps you could draw out some invisible dark matter above, so that it is truly impossible to 'squirm'.

I'll try to put some in but some will have to be emitted as there are some overlapping spots. That could be awkward. Thanks for the suggestion.

Basically by weight and by barriers on the back layers.

It's a box on his head and behind it there's a piece of polystyrene which the box is attached to. There's dark matter above the box to stop him jumping.

Yeah but the dark matter isn't attached. It only acts as a barrier.

Helping toward s the development process surely deserves some. I would have given you some earlier but I was on my PS3.


How do you get it on the guy at the start of the level?

I just get the player to stand in a certain position, then it gets lowered down. They can't get into the next room without it.

I made it heavier with wood and metal. It's now very difficult to get out of. 1 problem is that if I make the terrain any lower or higher by even the slightest amount it gets easy to escape from.

You should put a player proximity switch in the harness, and set it to inverted. so that way if your sackboy squirms out of it something like poison gas is emmited and kills him2008-12-23 02:54:00
