Photo Project

Archive: 7 posts

Just sharing some of my recent photos from a project I am working on...specifically black and white high contrast and colorized negatives. The original photo was taken at our Subdivision's river park on the Guadalupe River in Texas in RAW format mode, so some of the detail has been lost while sizing the image for this thread. The original image size is 48"x27". Please feel free to comment and critique .

This first picture is the original photo from which the other two were created. It was overcast with a storm approaching. I kept exposure at normal intentionally to keep some of the shadows intact.

This image is the result of cropping the lighter portion of the sky to enhance the contrast of the river against the wooded hillside. I burned in the highlights and sharpened the image for more contrast and detail.

This image is a negative of a colorized version of the original above, cropped for a more out-worldly effect. I like the way the lighter areas of the foreground rocks have a plasma energy look.

Thanks for your comments SGR. I really enjoy photography, but I don't have enough free time to do it justice. It took several hours to burn the highlights in on the 2nd image...so this project is taking wayyyyyy tooooo long to complete. But fun nonetheless. 2011-08-27 14:38:00

Really nice effect! I wonder though, any way to get closer down to the water for the same shot? I feel like I am too much looking down into that and might be cooler to be a bit further down from where you are standing. Though obviously I don't know the terrain at all!

Also, you might want to check out HDR (high dynamic range) photography. Combining 3 shots to cover the full range of tonal values would aid you well in further intensifying your wishes for the final colorization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

Great work and interested to see what you come up with next!

OK jw...you do realize after reading your post that I have to go puchase all the fun software applications to create the HDR effect . Actually, I've been pondering the idea of purchasing a more professional software package, and your comments have helped me make my mind up. You are also correct about the angle of the photo--I got as low as I could, but then again I don't have the mini tripod. Mine, at it lowest point, is about 20", and there is no way I could take the shot holding the camera in my hand. So sounds like I should bite the bullet there as well, and spend a few more dollars on the mini.

So...I've already begun research on the technique. These are the apps I'm thinking about buying, although that may change a bit after I get pricing...Photomatix Pro, Photoshop, Noiseware Professional and Topaz Photoshop Bundle. I have been using Corel Photo Paint 6 and Microsoft Digital Image Edition 2006, and I like them both for various features, but it appears I will need to be able to merge the portions of all the exposures to achieve the overall effect, which is seriously awesome btw.

Thanks for the advice.

My favorite is definitely the first pic. since you captured the water and sky in one shot. It really looks beautiful!2011-08-29 18:16:00

Thanks for your comment blizzard. With jw's advice about HDR techniques, I will be trying to make the final effect more dramatic. I'll post the finalized version here when I'm done. 2011-08-30 00:12:00
