http://lbp.me/v/dz-d0 Level name: Treetop Escape Author: Linque PSN: Sir_Linque Level Location: Middle of the Atlantic Ocean (on the LBP planet) Short description: A single player level of traditional platforming. It's challenging, but rewarding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfxu04z4uKg I've finally released my first LBP non-beta level, called Treetop Escape! I've no idea how many hours I've spent on the level, but it's most probably closer to 100 hours than 50. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to take it for a ride! A very big thanks goes to Mark D. Stroyer for helping out A LOT as a alpha/beta tester over the course of making this level. The feedback I got was invaluable. When you reach the finish, you'll see green leds to the right of the scoreboard - these indicate which of the bonus areas you have reached. If one or more of the LEDs are not lit, you know you haven't reached all of the secret/bonus areas of the level. We held the first LBPC High Score competition in this level ( I don't know if any further competitions have been held ). Here's the summary of it. See if you can beat the high scores! Congratulations To The First LBPC Level Competition Winner: DoctorRamatool The competition for the highest score on Sir_Linque's Treetop Escape level remained fierce till the end! Congratulations to DoctorRamatool for showing how it's done - he got an insane score of 49 006! That's over 2000 better than the next score, with deboerdave claiming the second place from RAINFIRE with 46 833! RAINFIRE, who seemed pretty dominant until the final day, takes home the bronze with 45 786. Congratulations to all who made it to the top ten! I hope you enjoyed playing Treetop Escape, and see you next time! Final Standings: - 49 006 - DoctorRamatool - - 46 833 - deboerdave - - 45 786 - RAINFIRE - - 44 073 - ifire1 - 42 410 - The_Killian - 37 640 - Dynashock - 36 429 - Shiwayari - 33 435 - SeparateEntity - 31 915 - RedSoakedSponge - 26 493 - gevurah22 Thanks for playing! http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak4.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak5.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak6.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak7.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak8.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak9.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak10.jpg http://linque.pp.fi/LBP/treetopsneak11.jpg | 2008-12-21 11:55:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |

i just have to say, even if you don't play it for points or come in a disappointing 11th in the contest, this level is a must play. Linque put it nicely when he called it challenging, yet rewarding. some very satisfying platforming elements here and a very nice balance of difficulty. it's hard, but not super hard, and not frustrating. a joy to play. | 2008-12-21 18:50:00 Author: Conall-Star Posts: 157 |
I look forward to trying this level out. Looks fantastic. | 2008-12-21 19:30:00 Author: Loafbone Posts: 11 |
I had a quick go and failed. I'll play it again later. The visuals are fantastic and the gameplay is fresh and challenging. I've noticed that a lot of people found the level too difficult and tagged it "Frustrating" which is a shame as it's a brilliant level. | 2008-12-21 21:38:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
I made a very small aesthetic tweak to the level just now - when you reach the finish, you'll see green leds to the right of the scoreboard - these indicate which of the bonus areas you have reached. If one or more of the LEDs are not lit, you know you haven't reached all of the secret/bonus areas of the level. | 2008-12-21 21:53:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |

I'm in second place, and I don't even think it's possible to reach your score Linque, like wtf 40k? That's ridiculous.... | 2008-12-21 23:33:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
I'm in second place, and I don't even think it's possible to reach your score Linque, like wtf 40k? That's ridiculous.... Remember, Linque is exempt (as is anyone not a member of LBPCentral) so if you're in 2nd, you're actually 1st. | 2008-12-21 23:48:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
Oh sweet. 1st place for now, I think I've found all the secrets' except one, God it's hard to get to... | 2008-12-21 23:50:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
So where is this level located? | 2008-12-22 00:22:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |
Made one more update - put a treasure chest sticker next to the LEDs so everyone can understand what the LEDs mean, and put numbers alongside the LEDs so you know which bonus area number you are missing. Also fixed LED number 5 being always lit even if you didn't visit the secret area. EDIT: Updated original post with the level location on the planet. | 2008-12-22 00:43:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
I'm going to play the level, but you can leave me exempt from the contest. | 2008-12-22 00:45:00 Author: Unknown User |

What a crafty way to get over 9,000 plays for your level. But looking at those pictures, it could well deserve it. | 2008-12-22 03:06:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
I've got them all except one and now I'm beating you by like 8,000! Bahaha! And I beat you by 3,000 + aced. =P Good job btw Linque. It's frustrating alright, but that's only because I couldn't get my multipliers the way I wanted to. I still have yet to visit the secret area. | 2008-12-22 03:22:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |

You know what I think would make this level even better? Zoom in a bit more generally throughout the level. At least in the parts where the camera is pulled so far back. | 2008-12-22 13:40:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
Nice job on Acing the level! And thanks for the compliments. Thanks man. One thing I'd like to point out though. You're gonna want to even up the camera angle on the second flaming square rock contraption you have in that race. The 2.5D angle makes it hard to judge and overshoot jumps sometimes which can get pretty frustrating. | 2008-12-22 13:45:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |
I'll make another pass at the camera angles and zoom levels soon. They're really difficult to get working right, because if you zoom too close, some of the hazards go out of sight, making it impossible to prepare for them. Thanks for the feedback. | 2008-12-22 14:00:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
Will try this soon. Sounds amazing! | 2008-12-22 14:29:00 Author: Unknown User |
Just as a sidenote: Watching how this level has transformed in leaps and bounds over time has been VERY cool to watch. From the original dark matter-heavy level with several vastly different areas, and refinement of those areas, it's been an awesome ride. I've given feedback along the lines of "this doesn't work: fix it like this" and walked into the level the next time to be struck by the same area being vastly different, and amazingly better. This guy's a creative beast. Also, for everyone who's playing the level now, be very, VERY glad that Linque softened up the difficulty for you. When it first started, a couple of the sections were absolutely KILLER. Even WITH double checkpoints, I had to restart the level numerous times to get through a couple sections. Plus, he had an "organic" feel to some areas, which means the patterns were...not there. Combined with insta-death. Not very fun. Especially when you go through it numerous times making sure there aren't any missed fall areas. Also, I'm disqualifying myself from the contest, since I've played it a lot longer than anyone else. And the reason my score isn't higher is because I was killing myself to make sure stuff worked right. So I think it's best for fairness I didn't participate. | 2008-12-22 18:35:00 Author: Mark D. Stroyer Posts: 632 |
Mark, you along all moderators are included in LBPC staff, so you're not eligible to participate anyhow. | 2008-12-22 18:56:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
...Right. Of course! How could I forget? It's not like I forgot to notice or anything. I was simply adding extra reasons. Of course. Please disregard previous post, paragraph 3. | 2008-12-22 19:01:00 Author: Mark D. Stroyer Posts: 632 |
Great level Trying to ace those swingy parts with the flaming boulders is a pain, though. | 2008-12-22 20:55:00 Author: Entity Posts: 274 |
Never before have I seen such a clash of epic win and epic fail. The level looks amazing and is brimming with originality, but ****, It's the most frustrating level I've played so far. The bridges alone were annoying as hell 'cause I kept falling through the small gaps (no, not the intentional large ones, I mean the small ones). I think what made it so frustrating is where I'd have an awesome streak of point bubbles and I would lose it for some BS reason. So maybe it was the contest that made it frustrating. Nevertheless, 5 stars and hearted. I'll try my best with the contest but I suspect I won't do too well. | 2008-12-22 22:36:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
This is level is irritating, in a good way. I keep playing it... I... Must.. Resist... | 2008-12-22 22:41:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
I played it a couple of times last night and again today. Very difficult, but I enjoyed it. | 2008-12-22 22:51:00 Author: Loafbone Posts: 11 |
About the bridges: If you jump, don't land on the gap between two planks. Land on the middle of a plank and the bridge will be much less hostile to you. To me, the hardest part of the level is the two-part rope bridge section when you go to down and to the left, near the middle of the level. I have a tough time staying on the bridge there myself, but then again it's supposed to be difficult, as you get a big reward for the bubble streak you're scoring while you stay on the bridge. | 2008-12-23 01:00:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
I really enjoyed the variety and challenge on this level... some of the best out there. It's very well rounded, and stands out visually. There are some fantastic mechanics in it it, like the conveyor/dumbwaiter system giving in to the stone block as it drops and rises, and the fantastic use of swing mechanics. Something's missing in the mood, but I'm not sure what. Maybe a character, like a chief or something... some kind of Crash Bandicoot ooga booga! Maybe some random sound effects to break up the monotony of the browns. No complaints though... cool stuff. I died my first time through trying to nab more points at the end, and on my replay I couldn't get 11k like I had. I'll try again sometime... | 2008-12-23 02:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
Yeah the level is beyond frustrating. Gonna give it another go though because of the contest and mainly because I want to beat it. It's by no means a bad level, just frustrating as hell. Reminds me of the wheel in the Wilderness level that destroyed me countless times....I always came back for more | 2008-12-23 05:37:00 Author: Neverynnal Posts: 374 |

Wow really? I messed up there once, and I've gotten every time since. Which would be 4 times. I wanted to put in a Totem that laughs at Sackboy's attempt to escape at several points, but due to thermometer constraints was unable to do it. Good job Linque, this level is very good. In fact, I think it is one the best levels I've played in lbp. It offers a variety of challenges and the game play is varied. | 2008-12-30 06:16:00 Author: ifire1 Posts: 7 |
I just noticed your PM from 3 weeks ago xD. Somehow I always forget to look up there. So here's what I think. First up, this is one of very few levels that I think deserves 5stars. The design is just awesome and the gameplay is present and fun throughout the whole level. I don't know why so many say it's frustrating, I don't really think so. You put up a lot of checkpoints, and it is definitely not that hard to finish the level. The hard part is getting a high score. Especially chaining multipliers. But I have yet to see one game where trying to get into top lists is not frustrating, I think the creator can't do much about it. There's no point in making it easy, because the challenge will be gone and so will be the desire to replay it. I loved how you made visible to players, when they found a secret. The bar at the scoreboard also encourages replay, because you will know there's more to discover. Btw, like Whaaaaale, I almost get all the bubbles at the part with the two bridges everytime =o. Now to the little flaws. - Somehow, the very first platform in the level is annyoing. Due to the camera, I fall down almost every time I try to jump on it. Though you could just jump over it to the second. - The already mentioned little gaps between the bridge parts. At the first playthrough, I didn't fall down even once. The longer I play, the more I fall through little gaps. This is also a flaw with LBP, as the jumping on moving things kind of sucks. I don't have much of an idea how to fix it, though. Maybe make the parts just a little bit bigger? - At the part with the first spinning wheel with platforms on it, there is an emitter set to visible below. - The swinging parts sometimes end up in killing you, without being able to do anything about it. Specific parts are the first few firestones at the one after the two bridges with bubbles, where you have to flick the two-way switch; and the third part of the "up and down" swinging, where the two big circles go left and right. I think a little pause before going down again would help at this point. - At the end of the part with the two bridges, just before falling down to the two-way switch, the poison fog is kind of unpredictable. I keep running into it xD. Maybe a little brown-stickered dissolve block here? - The moving spiky platforms near the finish. I don't know if it's supposed to be like that, but sometimes there's less space between two. One time I couldn't get through, because there was too little space. - At the second part where the fire block is going uo and down (at the race), you can get stuck between the wall and the moving part, if you jump against the left wall on the very top. (I thought I could get to the secret that way =o) That's all I can think of. Just got into the Top 10 at #6. I don't care much about the contest, but it's fun to try getting a higher score. Really it's the first level where scoring feels like an accomplishment. I'm in the process of making a level, but I'll probably have to practice to make it that good. Makes me want to create a platforming level too. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at making awesome visuals. Anyway, nice work and I look forward to seeing more. Edit: Forgot I wanted to ask how the hell do you check the leaderboards of your own (or other) levels? I can't find it, yet it seems possible, seeing the contest. | 2008-12-30 14:57:00 Author: Shiwayari Posts: 167 |
Edit: Forgot I wanted to ask how the hell do you check the leaderboards of your own (or other) levels? I can't find it, yet it seems possible, seeing the contest. Thanks for the feedback Shiwayari, I'll get back to the other points later on, and update the scoreboard for all the contestants, but first I'll just answer this question. Just before you enter a level, opening up the menu with the play level buttons, you can scroll level information with the L1 and R1 buttons. It takes a few seconds to load all the different info pages, with the scoreboard being the last, so you will have to wait a sec, then start scolling the pages. If I recall correct, the scoreboard info should be right after the list of comments a level has received. Hmm.. There's no scoreboard in that menu for me. It's just Play/Heart/Search Options, Publishing Options, Description, Level Screenshot, Tags, Some random score*, comments, objects list. *The random score is either a score from someone on my friendlist or something like best 2-player score. I can't go through the scoreboard and look who's at which position. Maybe I should make a thread in the help forum about this.. To stay a little on topic: How come I jumped from position 6 to 5 without even playing the level? Do you actually fall down the scoreboard if you complete the level again with a lower score? | 2009-01-02 00:46:00 Author: Shiwayari Posts: 167 |
When you see the random score, press square to circle through different scoreboards. One of them is 'best 1-player score'. I removed myself from the list, as I'm not eligible to participate in the contest. | 2009-01-02 07:24:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
ahh there are 8 areas, and i have found every single one except for the 4th >_< i will keep looking though, and did you say that there is a secret area, other than the ones listed? if so then time to start looking for that too. hhahahaha. Cheers! | 2009-01-02 20:14:00 Author: RAINFIRE Posts: 1101 |
I played this, and while I liked the look, I kept falling through the gaps in the bridges. I also couldn't tell where the openings were that I needed to jump. If you could call those out in some way that would help. Because the bridges gave me such trouble I got frustrated and gave up about half way. Sorry man......fix those bridges and I'll give it another go. killer Check out my level: SACK and the BEANSTALK! by "thekillermiller" | 2009-01-02 21:08:00 Author: thekillermiller Posts: 38 |

Just great, I loved every bit of this level. Had a few problems with some of the bridges but I think it was just from jumping on the wrong spot. The treasure chest secrets are genius. The platforming was great fun. I really couldnt stop playing until I got top 10... not because of the contest, but mainly because I was just enjoying it that much. Reminded me of the super nintendo donkey kong levels for some reason.... Hearted it. Great job! Even though I guess this isnt entirely a review and I'm not sure if you marked this as F4F or not...but give my level The Stone Temple a try if you get the time and let me know what you think. Dont need a whole write up or anything. | 2009-01-03 03:16:00 Author: Doctor Ramatool Posts: 189 |
did you say that there is a secret area, other than the ones listed? if so then time to start looking for that too. hhahahaha. Cheers! No, I was just talking about the treasure chest areas. There are no secrets in addition to the chests. That would kind of defeat the purpose of the chests. Even though I guess this isnt entirely a review and I'm not sure if you marked this as F4F or not...but give my level The Stone Temple a try if you get the time and let me know what you think. Dont need a whole write up or anything. Sure thing, I'll check your level at some point. There are a few levels that I need to check, I'll play through all of them at some point. Well, I'm back after a long, long hibernation since LBP2 is coming along. I'm sure most members have no clue about who I am - but this level is the one big project I did in the original LBP. If LBP2 ends up being as good as it seems, this time around I'll probably stick around longer and finish up the more ambitious level designs I have in mind. Maybe I'll remix Treetop Escape too. I'd be very happy for any feedback (especially constructive criticism!) on this level from users who haven't seen it before. What are the biggest flaws of Treetop Escape? Go nuts, let me know what sucks. | 2010-09-15 12:16:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
