Battle for Escalaphon - Based on warhammer 40k

Archive: 1 post

This is a short story i was working on for Bolter and Chainsword site i think that's the one, but never got round to finishing it. Any criticism would be great.
Its a story based on Warhammer 40k about a battle between an invading Chaos force and focuses on a few main characters from differing factions. If you don't know what something is then just ask and will tell you.
I thought I'd post it and see what people think as i have never really done a writing class but think it is okay if not then feel free to tell me.

Warning: There will be some violence in it. And it is a little long.

Battle for Escalaphon

Smoke and debris engulfed the citadel’s western face as the massive Ecclesiarch tower fell to the ground, throwing a thick cloud of dust into the surrounding streets for miles around.
Karanvarge swooped down to land on top of a tall tower over looking the devastation. He knelt, and his bio-mechanical flesh wings folded back as he landed. He smiled grimly, astonished at the destruction caused by the stray shell from the monstrous Hellhammer battle tank.
The streets filled with a thick dust cloud that no mortal man would be able to see through, but his eyes were enhanced and he could see every detail in the dust filled streets clearly. He saw a column of Chimera APC’s engulfed by the dust cloud as they headed towards the broken tower. He decided that the commander of the leading tank, standing in the cupola of its hatch would become his next prey. He let out a howl, spreading the wings of his jump pack wide, and dropped from the roof into a long powered glide.

With his goggles in place Hersan Blake grabbed hold of the pintle-mounted heavy stubber and pulled the triggers, firing a burst of shots ahead of the chimera. “That should keep the enemies heads down, if they’re out there” he thought. The dust cloud prevented him from seeing any further than five or six metres. From the corner of his eye he thought he saw movement to the left and turned the heavy stubber, firing another burst into the thick dust cloud.
“Valport, where’s the ****ed enemy? I can’t see a thing out here.” Blake shouted through the vox-bead attached to the inside of his helmet.
“Sir, auto-senses are picking up eight signals straight ahead, extreme range.” Lieutenant Valport replied. Then a few moments later he was back on the vox. “They’ve gone now, Sir. Must have been a glitch”
Blake thought he saw movement above him to the right, but could hear nothing over the noise of his vehicle’s engine. He fired a burst to his right, wondering if an enemy might have found some high ground.
“Are you scanning the upper levels of the buildings Valport? I don’t want to die with a bullet through my skull because you were thinking in two dimensions instead of three. Is anything on those buildings?” he asked, sweeping the heavy stubber from side to side nervously.
“I can’t tell sir this dust is interfering with my equipment.”
Suddenly something was there, in front of the chimera, a shadowy figure half hidden by the dust. The cockpit gunner must have seen it too. The chimera stopped abruptly and its heavy bolter barked as it fired a long burst of rounds into the dust ahead. An eerie scream caught Blake’s attention and he supposed the heavy bolter had hit home. He fired the heavy stubber into the area for good measure, but the shadow was no longer there.

An eddy in the dust above him made him look up towards the sky once more, but he could see nothing. He cursed then felt a breeze behind him. He turned but still there was nothing to be seen. He started to turn back to face the front of the chimera but never completed the move. In the corner of his vision he saw a flash. He never knew what it was. His head leapt from his shoulders, rolling across the roof of the chimera, tipping gently over the edge to slide down the front glacis plate, seeming to look through the vision slit at the horrified driver as it went past. His body, no longer made to stand upright in proper Guard fashion, slowly slumped forward across the heavy stubber, arms dangling as if reaching out to pick up his wayward head.
A heavily armoured, winged warrior landed on top of the Chimera, the vehicles upper hatch bending under the warrior’s weight.
Valport shouted to the gunner next to him as he looked up at the bending metal of the vehicles top hatch. He could see a large dark figure peering through the crack. Terror took his soul as the hellish figure spotted him and roared. “Emperor save us” he cried as he reached for his las pistol.
Karanvarge punched his lightning claws into the Chimeras back hatch and tore both doors from their hinges throwing both halves to each side of the vehicle.
Las-bolts flashed out of the open chimera each shot bouncing off the chaos assault marine’s dark armour. Karanvarge laughed at the slaughter he was about to dish out, and jumped into the vehicles hull. Screams of the dying soldiers echoed out of the vehicle and blood sprayed up into the air followed by a murderous cackle.

Karanvarge’s wing spread wide as he let out a blood-curdling roar into the sky. Soon his seven raptor brethren swooped down through the dust, lightning claws and melta weapons ready to tear through the armoured chimera column. Explosions echoed throughout the street, black coiling clouds of smoke adding to the dust. Guardsmen ran from their burning wrecked vehicles unable to see their attackers and firing wildly into the sky.
Giant armoured, winged figures appeared out of nowhere taking guardsmen and lifting them up through the dust and black billowing smoke, high above the cities streets allowing them to briefly witness the cities destruction before letting them go, watching them fall back through the dust and smoke.
The last of the vehicles exploded in white-hot flame as melta weapons incinerated its armour. Karanvarge stood on top of one of the wrecked chimeras, a guardsman impaled upon the index finger of his right lightning claw “Weak” he growled as he flung the guardsman’s corpse to the ground. His assault troops tore what was left of the feeble soldiers apart with lightning claws and talons. Some of the dying guardsmen attempted to fight back but were slaughtered without even scratching the chaos marines ancient armour.
The dust began to settle and Karanvarge lifted his head; his large mutated nostrils sniffed the air. He grinned as he court the sent of a new prey. It’s sent was familiar and pleasing.
“I smell a new prey my brothers. Let us hunt.” He said before he jumped into the air, his raptors close behind him, their large wings lifting them high above the cities streets in pursuit of their new prey.

The dust settled and crushed, broken bodies lay strewn around the mountain of rubble left by the fallen tower. Renegade militiamen swarmed over the ruins towards a large breach in the bastion walls that lead into the Tri-citadels lower outer levels. Traitor sentinels led the assault into the breach as renegade tanks bombarded the western bastion with overwhelming fire from their cannons.
Las-fire lit the darkness of the citadels lower catacombs as renegade militia poured through the breach screaming and shouting wordless warcries.
“We must hold the breach at all costs.” Captain Kremin of Falcon Platoon shouted as he thumbed at the activation rune of his master crafted chainsword as he charged towards the enemy pouring through the breach. He punched his chainsword through a militiaman’s lower stomach; blood and flesh sprayed over him as the weapons razor sharp teeth ripped through the man’s stomach spilling his guts on the floor. White-hot plasma balls passed is shoulder obliterating two guardsmen behind him. He charged forwards past a renegade militiaman and smacked the butt of his las pistol into the head of another dropping the man to the floor then jumped under a broken scaffold to dodging more plasma fire.
“Forward” Kremin cried out and flung himself into a diving roll dodging the swipe of a crude double bladed axe, he brought his chainsword up in a sidewards arc tearing the renegades right arm from his shoulder then brought his las pistol down hard into the mans chest sending him to the ground. Another shot of white-hot plasma passed his head missing him by inches but still burned his flesh.
He lifted his las pistol and fired several shots at the heretic wielding the plasma rifle. Each shot punched through the man’s torso sending him backwards four steps. As if uninjured the man lifted his plasma rifle and pulled on the weapons trigger twice. The ancient weapon managed to let loose one shot of heated plasma but overheated and exploded before the second shot could fire. The heretic screamed in agonising pain as the heated explosion incinerated both his arms instantly. Kremin fired two shots into the traitor’s head, putting him out of his misery.
"For the Emperor" Kremin cried out as heavy calibre rounds smashed chunks out of the broken rubble beneath his feet and he dived backwards behind a large cracked stone slab. Two enemy sentinels climbed over the rubble and into the breach heavy reaper autocannons unleashing havoc as more heavy calibre rounds tore dozens of his men apart. Veteran sergeant Cronaman dived down next to Kremin blood pouring from a gunshot wound to his right arm.

“Captain I have two melta bombs in my pack but I can’t move my arm I think the bone is broken.” Cronaman shouted over the roaring echo of gunfire within the confined space wincing from the pain.
“Give me your pack sergeant. I need those bombs.” Kremin ordered removing the Sergeants pack from his shoulders. He loaded a fresh cell pack into his las pistol and handed it to the sergeant and asked him to cover him. Sergeant Cronaman leant over the stone slab and fired the pistol into the enemy killing to traitors instantly. Kremin shouted over the din of fire towards a lone Guardsman who was ducked behind a large pile of broken rubble.
“Get a vox. Order all platoons within catacombs C and D to evacuate towards the emperors promenade. I want you to blow these tunnels at once. Falcon platoon will hold this position. Emperor be with you.” The Guardsman jumped to his feet and fired two shots from his lasgun towards the enemy as he retreated in search of a vox-unit. Covered by Falcon Platoon the Guardsman nodded and ran back towards catacomb C’s entrance.

Captain Kremin jumped to his feet and raised his chainsword above his head. “Falcon Platoon our time has come to prove to this world that we are more than just Imperial Guardsmen. Let us show this renegade scum we are the Emperors chosen. For the Emperor” Kremin cried out pointed the chainsword at the enemy and charged, every guardsman in his platoon shouted out in approval readying bayonets then charged towards the enemy.
Sergeant Cronaman jumped to his feet and fired the captain’s pistol several times into the enemy. When the gun had fired its last shot he jumped over the stone slab and charged alongside his men. The enemy hit hard bayonets and jagged blades clashed, blood sprayed along the cracked walls of the corridor as men fought for their lives in a deadly close quarters combat.

A frag grenade exploded near Kremin sending him flying and crashing to the ground. Before the renegade above him could bring the blood covered mace down into his skull Cronaman tackled the man to the into a fallen scaffold. They struggled and the heretic squeezed at Cronamans tattered broken arm with his dirt covered hands. The sergeant screamed in pain then a las blast hit the heretic from behind throwing him over the scaffold. Cronaman looked back to see the guardsman that just saved his life get torn to pieces by heavy autofire from one of the renegade Sentinels.
“Heretic scum” He shouted and reloaded his pistol then charged towards the Sentinel.
Kremin stood and swept his chainsword into the side of a renegade militiaman almost tearing him in half. One of the heretic sentinels turned to face the Platoon Captain and let out a salvo of autocannon rounds. The captain fell to the ground pushed aside by Cronaman once more. Consequently in saving his captains life the sergeant had lost his own, he lay lifeless next to Kremin with four large holes in his back.

Strike force leader, Captain Azalen of the Angels Vermilion Space Marines, stood atop the northern walls of the tri-citadels bastion fortress, his devastator squads and whirlwinds fired at traitor heavy vehicles and sentinels below. Torrents of castellan missiles fell towards the traitor guard held up within Tenants Square. Buildings crumbled and exploded as missiles flattened the district.
"Captain, I have just lost contact with assault squad Erilas. Before coms went down he mentioned seeing renegade Astarties near the southern Bastion." Veteran Sergeant Verlentis shouted over the din of explosions and heavy bolter fire. Azalen nodded and lifted a data-slate that showed a map of the tri-citadel palace and the surrounding fortifications.
"Contact Master Chaplain Artavasdas and inform him we are to expect traitor Astartes and may require reinforcements” Captain Azalen said as he watched as servitors and fire-units raced towards the broken Ecclesiachy towers bastions.
“Then send your squad to the southern bastion immediately and find out what has happened to the Chimera transports and assault squad Erilas. If we are up against one of the traitor legions we must act quickly or loose this battle”
