Where to Begin

I really want to be able to make levels in LBP2. I've watched all the tutorials in-game, but I still don't even know where to start. Maybe this doesn't fit here, but does anyone have any suggestions for sort of easing myself into the creation process? | 2011-08-26 14:43:00 Author: Unknown User |
What would you like to make? What topic or theme holds your interest? Spaceships? Ghost castles? Find a topic or theme you care enough about that it will inspire you for ideas and will keep you interested in creating for a while. Now, probably best is to make a sidescrolling platform game with this as a start, because that is what the editor excells at. So, ask yourself how a spaceship or a castle makes for a cool game. What kind of obstacles, aids, enemies or clues would fit into these themes? An elevator... sentry robots... a super computer... laser security systems... sharp spears... a tower to climb... a wooden bridge... You get the idea. And then, create! | 2011-08-26 15:04:00 Author: Antikris Posts: 1340 |
That's a tough question. I suppose the best thing to do is start small. Get used to the tools by creating specific items/objects/contraptions. Just stuff you'd like to play around with. For example, the first thing I can remember making in LBP1 was a sleigh. Eventually I made a ramp for it, and turned that into a short level. If you're not sure what to make, play some community levels. When you see something in a level you really like, go and try to recreate it yourself. I learned quite a lot doing that. Once you get comfortable with the tools, materials, and objects you have to work with, it'll become easier to think of original ideas to create. Basically, just make whatever you want, for yourself. Worrying about pleasing the community can come later. | 2011-08-26 15:27:00 Author: Timelord_X Posts: 55 |
Like the others said start with what you like, and start small. Making a level is a daunting thing at first. Levels can take anywhere from days to months to complete and polish. It's an involved process that is made much easier by being familiar with what you have in your toolbox. First thing to decide is if you like to make things work, or if you like to make them look nice. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but usually people are more interested/better at one than the other. I like to make strange logic components, so that was where I started out, but maybe you would enjoy making very cool looking robots or scenery. Now pick something small in that theme to make. If you chose a pirate theme and like logic, maybe you could make a cannon that fires. If you chose a space theme and like creating things, then maybe you could design some strange alien buildings or plants. Then maybe you would need a ship to put them on. Just play around with things like that and move forward one object at a time. As you start building more and more "things", a level idea will come to you. When it does, you will be much more prepared to make it having gotten familiar with your tools. | 2011-08-26 19:03:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
build a little something that you'd enjoy play with in create mode maybe? Don't try and build some crazy big complicated level packed with loads of intricate ideas, unless that's what you really want to do (not because that's what everyone else does!) The first thing i built in LBP2 was a little circle with a controlinator on it with an advanced mover and a few other bits an pieces, i used to to fly about in create mode, then i added an emitter that shot projectiles, cuz it looked cool, then i spent an age figuring out how to get the shooting aiming independent to the flying direction (which considering what i know now is embarrassingly simple!) Then i thought hmmm, it would look nicer if it looked more like a space ship type of thing, so i spent a while designing a cool looking ship shape and got it to how i liked it. Then i just spent ages adding little bits and bobs to it until it turned into something else entirely. Just go create man! don't have a direction, just explore and do stuff and have fun and you will learn along the way. | 2011-08-26 22:18:00 Author: Epicurean Dreamer Posts: 224 |
Whatever you decide on, start simple - and ask questions when you get stumped. Last, remember creating isn't easy. It can be fun, but it takes patience and perseverance. So, don't give up. Even if your first level isn't a masterpiece, you will get better as you continue, just like anything in life. | 2011-08-26 23:16:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Start by making a random platform generator. It makes platform sets appear randomly and the player has to survive. It is not original, but it has some nice things to start with: -not too hard -lots of examples -you can add new platforms to make the game better easily once the game is done -you can upgrade the game fast by speeding it up with time, making it give score, give the platforms you made to players with a good score at the end, etc. Play comphermc's LBP2-Torial on youtube. One of them talks about scrolling platformers. | 2011-08-27 01:40:00 Author: Unknown User |
Write down your favourite things and combine them into a story/level. | 2011-08-27 02:33:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
When I started, I was overwhelmed by the creation tools offered and, like you, didn't know where to begin. I didn't play the game for months, and sometime during those months I decided to come back to LBP2, see if I could try to understand all the complex logic that was nonexistent in LBP1. Now, a couple of months later, LBP2 is basically all I play. I don't consider myself a pro with all the new tools but I have a basic understanding of them, which is enough to create some pretty cool stuff. It takes time to understand all the tools in LBP2, but once you do, all that time spent learning their functions will be worth it. | 2011-08-27 08:50:00 Author: lbp2goty Posts: 104 |
Well, it just takes time. At first I had no clue what all the tools and things did, and then LBP2 came out and I was even more stumped. But know I've had it for a long time and I am (kinda) good at creating. Just play around with the tools, whatch comph's LBPlanetorials and have fun! Make whatever comes to your mind, a banana phone that works, a plate that when grabbed makes a random animal appear on it, a door that turns into a table, or anything else! Then if you want to you can start making themed obstacles and stuff, and put them together into a level! Maybe showcase some of your amazing contraptions, or make a movie! LBP2 has endless possibilities! Just have fun and create what you like! | 2011-08-27 12:56:00 Author: NcLc2010 Posts: 72 |
The best advice I can give is to base the level on something you like. As people here have said it's a time consuming process so you need to pick something you won't get bored of easily. This is why I'd pick theme over genre, is there a particular video game you like and could maybe adapt into your own mini version, a sport you like playing which you could make a basic simulation of? These are questions you should be asking yourself, and once you start, you'll be away. | 2011-08-27 13:42:00 Author: Xaif Posts: 365 |
Start with something you like, then start creating!!! If you need more advance toturials, try checking out Silverscorp91 and Comphermc's Youtube channels out! Well, when I first started out with LBP1 I made a simple "Obstacle Course" platforming level. You could start out with something like that just to learn the basics of simple level creation, and then move on to some of the more fun and complicated stuff like making arcade levels with the hologram material that make use of the controllinator. (BTW, this is my first post on these forums; I've been a member of the official Playstation LBP community forums for a while but they are pretty much dead now, so I decided to join a different forum such as this one that hopefully will have more activity :-) ). | 2011-08-27 16:35:00 Author: Unknown User |
You definitely want to try out all the tools. My first published level didn't use a single anti-gravity tweaker, because I didn't even know about them yet! Of course, the entire level is sitting on the ground... | 2011-08-27 22:16:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
Try making a simple, though entertaining, level. Don't go around like me that's trying to create a Wizard level for the first level. Then, when you get the hang of the Create Mode, you can do some more awesome and complex things. | 2011-08-28 01:29:00 Author: Unknown User |
