Its illegal to hack any game right?

Archive: 12 posts

So for example its illegal to hack LBP2 to allow someone to be able to do something like save data where it normally wouldn't be possible? Or to allow a manual save.2011-08-26 04:29:00

Saving data isn't hacking; it's just saving.

Altering data for your own means still isn't considered hacking; it's modding.

When you breach into forbidden or secured data, then it's hacking.

Saving data is allowed, while modding varies from developers to conditions and restrictions. Hacking, however, is strictly prohibited; if the developer(s) made it difficult and secured their files to stop people from altering them, then it's obvious that they don't want you to mess with them. So, depending on how serious it is or who the develop(s) are, it could be illegal (majority of the time it is).

Have you read the EULA? You should find everything you need to know in there.2011-08-26 04:57:00

It depends on several things 1. Did you buy the game? If yes, proceed to 2. 2. Are you going to be selling it? 3. Would it break the game for others if you used it? IF it doesn't go under any of these your fine.2011-08-26 17:22:00

Remember that as far as I know, to mod a game in the PS3 you'll need to hack it first, as PS3 games and system have no support for modded games.2011-08-26 21:03:00

Actually...no. First of all, it's not called "hacking", it's called "modifying". Hacking is the process in which you use a computer to gain unauthorized access to data within a system. Hacking is almost always illegal, because you're stealing data. Modifying is not - modifying is simply "changing". You own your console and you own your games, so you're not "hacking" them, you're modifying them. Modification of owned property is (almost) always entirely legal. It may not always be easy (especially with video games, what with the in-built protections and all), but it's not illegal.

However, modifying almost always breaks any Terms of Use and/or EULAs between you and any service providers you use to play said game/use said console. For example, while it is legal to modify a game, online service providers have no obligation to continue providing you their service if you do so. They have every right to ban you from XBL/PSN/etc because it is their service - you pay to use it, but you're using it under their terms, not yours. It is entirely within your rights to modify game code to do whatever you want it to do, but the second you attempt to have that modified code interact with others via an online service, you've breached the agreed-upon terms between you and that provider and they no longer have any obligation to provide you that service.

So, in short: hacking is illegal, modifying is not. However, modifying can still easily get you banned from online services such as Xbox Live or PSN, and it is entirely within those service providers' rights to do so, so think carefully about whether or not it's a good idea.

Hey! That's almost exactly what I said, minus the going into detail about the modifying part.

No it is not illegal. You do not go to jail/prison/court for hacking a game lol. It's against the terms of agreement for the game, that's all. You can get banned or such but not government action. Also I've never heard of any banning in LBP so yeah lol, MM doesn't take hacking or modding serious like a company like blizzard/activison so you'll most likely be fine.2011-08-28 20:40:00

My definition of "HACKING" is this: Modifing , deleting, or adding files to modify the Program's/Game's behaviour, even if it harms or benefits the player. So, that is what I think hacking is.2011-08-29 03:46:00

Reading the EULA? BLASPHEMY! Who does that?

Seriously, MM could legally own all our testicles and we didn't know it because none of us has read it... Just blindly agreed with it
