What qualifies a level for "Cool Levels"?
Archive: 11 posts
Just something I've been wondering for a while. Do levels get picked for "cool levels" based on plays, hearts, rating? | 2011-08-25 08:42:00 Author: Trader347 Posts: 57 |
Are you referring to the Cool Levels section on this site in particular, or the Cool Levels within the game? | 2011-08-25 09:19:00 Author: Slaeden-Bob Posts: 605 |
A wonderful creator I'm friends with named CYMBAL who's had a number of his levels on the cool pages explained to me that it's all about the play to heart ratio from when you publish the level. The first hour being the up-most important, the time after that being not so, but still important non the less. The trick is to get your friends on board that you're publishing a level soon, pick a date and time and stick to it, so all your friends can go play (and heart) your level very soon after its published. At face value it seems a little cheeky, but once you know a thing or two about how utterly broke the cool level finding algorithm MM uses to choose cool levels, you will notice that the pre-notification via message thing is actually a very fair system decent creators are forced to used to gain the rightful credibility they deserve. If enough of your friends play (and heart) your level soon enough after release, the algorithm picks up the behavior of 'positive social attention' to your level and pops it into the only list people have of seeing new levels, and then its a snowball effect, once your level is in a place people can see, the plays come rolling in. Bit backwards? Indeed. which is why it has to be done this way, otherwise, there's no other way of anyone seeing your level other than spotting it on their friends recent play list, (which by nature will always be of a momentum way below what would be needed for the cool levels algorithm to 'spot' that your level is 'popular', even if its immaculately built and extremely fun to play) or actually searching for the name its self, on top of the text search function being broken.... well you get the picture. | 2011-08-25 09:26:00 Author: Epicurean Dreamer Posts: 224 |

Shadowriver and Epicurean Dreamer are correct. That's actually how I was able to get my newest level Through A Nightmare, Darkly on the Cool Levels pages. It made it as far as the 2nd page, and then it dropped little by little from there. | 2011-08-25 17:28:00 Author: InfiniteTwilight Posts: 159 |
Well in my opinion there is 2 ways: Make a terrible level or copy with H4H all over it, or make a good level and make it gt plays and hearts! | 2011-08-26 12:04:00 Author: NcLc2010 Posts: 72 |
Well that explains the overwhelming amount of H4H levels on the cool pages. My Bioshock level made to the cool pages and stayed there for a good week slowly dropping throw the pages this was because i advertised it to anyone i thought may be interrested the moment i published it and it got quite a few plays and hearts early on. I would never use H4H in my title for any published levels but it would be interesting to add it to the titlt of a published level and see what happens then after a while remove it from the title. I wonder if it would make a difference or not? | 2011-08-26 13:02:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |

I wonder if it would make a difference or not? I'll dis-own you if you do that. Lol... It would help since you're a pretty well known (sorta?) creator. And if you spammed enough. But just publishing a H4H level won't really do you any good... :/ | 2011-08-26 16:52:00 Author: Speedynutty68 Posts: 1614 |
Rather put H4N, that means Hearts for Nclc2010! | 2011-08-27 12:39:00 Author: NcLc2010 Posts: 72 |
Or Hearts for Nothing! Which is kind of funny as that's what everyone would prefer, and I suspect a lot of people who tag their levels H4H (who aren't chasing a trophy) are hoping to exploit. Although technically the give-and-get structure of X4Xing means it should be Nothing for Hearts, or N4H... which is also kind of cool for being a nice leet speek sentiment. Someone wants hearts for nothing, which is technically N4H? "Nah!" | 2011-08-27 12:53:00 Author: Unknown User |
