Have an object follow a path
Archive: 3 posts
How can I have a object follow a path? Like in the story level with the fireflies (can't remember the level name right now). In tha level the fireflies go through a path and I'm guessing there is a guiding wheel or something on the back of it that goes through the lines. But how they make it move smoothly? | 2011-08-25 01:32:00 Author: Tricky Posts: 46 |
There are a few ways to send something along a path. A follower pursuing a series of tag-bearing holograms is probably the fanciest approach until the Move pack puts it to shame with motion-captured routes. You've pretty much got the firefly pathing figured out, though. Their route and all its smoothness is defined by the material tracks. The fireflies just need a couple tabs in the slot and they're ready to go. Wheels or a mover push them forward and the track naturally forces them to follow its contours. They're always oriented along the line defined by the pegs in the slot. It's roughly the same way that trains move along rails. Overall the follower is better for paths with sharp corners while a track achieves a nice rounded look with less fuss. | 2011-08-25 03:31:00 Author: Uncuddly Posts: 237 |
I'm sure there's dozens of ways to do it, but one that I have used and got really smooth results is to use a path of tags. The trick is to use a look at rotator and set your maximum radius to as large as you would like, but set your minimum radius to be just larger than your tag. The set your detection angle to just around 140-180 degrees. Have a mover on there going at whatever speed you want, and using local space. Now adjust the speeds on the rotator and the mover so that they look smooth. What this does is your object looks at the first tag and the mover moves it towards it. Once over the tag it becomes out of range due to the minimum radius, so your look at rotator starts rotating towards the next tag while the mover pushes along with it. This will give you nice smooth curves rather than the mover abruptly changing direction every time. Once you find a move/rotation speed combo you like, you can attach a counter to the inputs of the mover and rotator and set them to speed scale. Now all you have to do is adjust the value in the counter to make it go faster or slower, and both the rotation and movement will scale appropriately. | 2011-08-25 04:42:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
