Chain Reaction (Single Player) Now with Pictures!!

Archive: 19 posts

Woohooo!!! I finally finished a level. It's a fun lbp adaptation on the flash based chain reaction game where you try to get as high a score as you can by causing a chain reaction of expanding balls. If you time your cursor just right you can get huge reactions, and if it is wrong, none at all.

Any input is appreciated. Especially when it comes to making it look better. Anything is welcome though.

I promise to do my best to get to any levels from people that provide some feedback. If it is a multiplayer level it may take a little longer.

Thanks guys, and have fun

Please note all of the numbers actually update on the fly, and keep accurate counts as you play. (that's probably my favorite part)

Just played the level, made it through all 10 levels. The level ran smoothly; I didn't find any glitches or problems. I noticed a block floating above the board. I don't know if it serves any purpose; it didn't interfere with gameplay, just simply stating that I noticed it. One thing that would have been cool to see, is a bonus level packed full with those dots, and watch them all explode MUAHAHA!! Though I guess that may make it lag a bit, so never mind. Yay and heart for this level =)

Please try my level called Asteroids!!! It's a 1-4 player asteroids style survival shooter.

Hey, got it in my queue, I'll go check it out in a minute
If you wouldn't mind, I am trying to get opinions on this level to see if there is anything else I can fix:

Hey, so I tried it out, and I gotta tell you, the tech is really impressive in terms of how functional and well performed it is. I played the level for like half an hour suffering through the puzzles and enjoyed the whole thing. certainly some good work, and good use of space / presentation

Thanks for having a look. I've played both of your levels and left my thoughts in your respective threads.

Brannayen i didn't notice a block, but it's certainly possible I overlooked something that I had in there for testing. I don't know what it could be, but i will have a look. Thanks.

Alismadia, glad you enjoyed it. There's really a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes there. Glad to hear that it all seems to be working properly.

Just played your level. It's very fun to play and gets pretty hard at the last few levels of the game. It's just that it takes more luck than skill to beat these levels.

But I have nothing bad to say about the level. I really enjoyed playing it and it worked great, didn't find any problems.

As for F4F, I'd like it if you could try my level and leave some feedback. The Secret Temple of Elements (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=61708-The-Secret-Temple-of-Elements)

thanks Firehunta. There is an element of luck involved, but there really is a lot of timing there too if you want to shoot for higher scores. Glad you enjoyed it.

I've got your lvl queued and will get to it soon.

I very much enjoyed playing this. It was new, refreshing, and fun. Great for those of us who have no skill and prefer to rely on luck.2011-08-26 05:56:00

Thanks Runeseer. If you have a link to a lvel I can try I'd be happy to give it a go.

@Firehunta. I played your level, but can't find your thread for feedback. Please post a link if you have one.

Brannayen YIKES!!! I just saw the block. It ended up in there at the last minute while I was trying to mask a few things out. I must have just not rewound far enough. Good catch.

Yeah I was watching when many balls were going to the center, would usually get a big chain reaction then. Just didn't really work that well for level 9 and 10, needed some luck there!

Thanks for playing. The link's in my post but sure I'll give it again https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=61708-The-Secret-Temple-of-Elements

This looks so interesting.... added it to queue.

If you have time, try my level. Thanks!

REVIEW: Tried it, and it was fun. The visuals were great, but the actual gameplay was a bit bad. The balls were moving slowly, so sometimes it would take long periods of time to try again and again. I thought if the action was sped up, it would be more fun to watch.

Hey Fear, did you play past the first few levels? I guess the gameplay style may not be for everyone. Thanks for the input.2011-08-27 00:22:00

Wow! Great level. Haven't got a clue how you'd make it but loved the original concept and unique gameplay. I managed to pass all ten levels and really enjoyed the reaction effect as the balls and target increased. Found the whole thing quite mesmerising in a simple yet complicated way, very much like those mini game swfs you encounter while stumbling around the internet. yay'd and hearted. Depending on the thermo and method of reaction effect produced (i''m guessing emitters?) maybe you could implement different single notes or sounds to produce random soundtracks as the chain reaction unfolds.2011-08-27 23:14:00

Thanks EnochRoot. I'm glad you like it. I've really been surprised at the positive reaction so far.

I can't take credit for the concept though. As I say in the description it is based on a flash game, and adapted to LBP with a few changes. Boomshine by Danny Miller is the earliest example I found. Pretty cool guy. The original is very fun. I don't have a link handy but it's easy to find.

The reaction effect is more an illusion than anything. The holo that forms the expanded ball is always there. It's just invisible until the main ball destroys itself on contact and triggers a transition timer to make the larger one fade in and activates the appropriate tags on it.

I really like your music idea. I may try and add that when I get a moment. Since that requires rebuilding 6 objects, placing those into emitters, and repasting 375 emitters, it may not be today lol. Very good idea.

It's just fantastic. I recently played Sun Lander, another app-style game adapted from elsewhere, and like that game I feel you've harnessed something incredible with Chain Reaction. That it's a tribute/adaptation doesn't take away from how much you've achieved yourself - you've problem solved it into a fully playable, addictive game in LBP to start! Though you don't need telling.

In my review I struggled to phrase it how I wanted (limited space and all that). I refer to "app" in a way that sounds kind of weird. It's a full on compliment - LBP games are bite sized and apps are more important than ever, they're certainly the right amount of gameplay people are willing to digest when trying something new... and then when it's good, they want more. You nailed it, and that's awesome. Also, you blast right through that barrier of entry for games which present a new interface. People (self included, regrettably) have certain prejudices whether or not they believe it: one of the strongest is "I control a sackthing, I want to play with it, not with something else!" What I mean to say is, you do a tremendous job of dropping the player into a whole new type of game that's instantly grokkable, no fuss or frustration. You make it very, very easy to get into this total departure from LBP gameplay. Just click play, and click again, and you know exactly how it works. And that's also awesome. The fact you've gotten all positive results is proof you've done good. VERY good.

40 minutes flew by when I played it twice last night. I love it.

Criticism (but not really): I noticed in the second play that scores were pretty much the same. It's clear that to get a higher score, you really need to chain those early dots, which gives the game a reverse skill curve, since by about level 7 everyone will be averaging the same success as you're required to get all dots anyway. That is to say, there's less flex at the end for a skilled player to distinguish themselves, it has to be right at the very start or not at all. However, I've been miles behind you throughout your troubleshooting and creation of this level, so I know you've racked your brain over this and settled on the current points system with good reason. In fact the only solutions I can think of to create variability in scores are all broken and random, ruining the skill curve, or worse, making it even stronger so that only the most expert of experts would end up coming out of the first five rounds with more than 0 points! So, kudos to you again.

Just an awesome job mate.

I'm looking forward to playing this. It has gotten a lot of good feedback and seems really unique. I'll play it ASAP

I just published a level you could take a look at. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=62439-Chip-s-Challenge

EDIT - Just played it. Really well made level. Its mesmerizing to watch the chain reaction seperate into different colorful groups. Sometimes the chain reaction would start from the left and go all the way across the screen to the right, which was pretty trippy to watch. Level 10 was definitely the hardest, which is what you would expect. Some of the early levels were harder than the mid levels though. Level 5 - 8 I finished in one try while I had to retry level 1 and 2 about 6 times. Very unique and fun level.

@Arbiekko- Thanks a lot. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Apparently a great deal Thanks for saying all the nice things. It's always nice to hear.

Yeah, the scoring is sort of an issue. I had it set up to play through 10 lives. This made the scores more varied, but often you wouldn't get past level 5, and the big fun is in the last few.

I wanted to do a system where each level expansion hit had a bonus on it, so the one that hit the cursor ball would get 100pts. The one that hit that one would get 200, and on up for each level of separation from the original. That became too thermo intensive though, and a complete nightmare to try and implement. It is something i want to keep in mind if I do a version 2, so all ideas are welcome.

@Greensmurfy- I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I know what you mean. When I was making it i would sometimes lock it on level 10 and just watch things go crazy each time.

That's a good point about the early levels. I may go in and try to make the balls move a little faster when i get some time.

Oh, and I played your level and enjoyed it. Feedback was left on your thread (but you saw that already )

Awesome level! Insanely addicting, too! This is an awesome mini-game for casual gamers, though me (A slightly hardcore player) loved it! The visuals were awesome, the gameplay was addicting, and the concept was a very underdone (yet cool) one. I have only seen this concept on computer games. (Most notably the week long even on DragonFable) Though this was very fun, I experienced a 'fixed' glitch: My cursor disappeared and never came back! D: It was on level 9. Just in case that matters. Other than that, I recommend this to anybody and everybody.

Thanks speedy. Glad you enjoyed the level, and sorry you hit a bug.

Can you elaborate some on what you found? I've just had a look and can't see any reason this should happen, but obviously I've missed something

There was a bug earlier that made this happen in the far corners because a tag went out of range, but I fixed that.

Please tell me where the cursor was, what you did (pressed x, pressed x over and over, accidentally used a nintendo controller, etc), or anything else you can think of that may be important. All of that will really help me trying to track it down.

Thanks!
