PS3 may be getting YLOD

Archive: 13 posts

Me and KlawwTheClown think that our PS3 is coming to an end because the fan is making really loud noises when we turn it on and it's been freezing a lot. So me and KlawwTheClown (Prattz on PSN) won't be much on until we get a new playstation, if that is the case.

Right now we're backing some of our stuff up for if it dies. Our dad is gonna get us an external HDD tomorrow to do a system backup.

I was guessing this is the proper place to put this thread since it's a problem with our PS3. If not feel free to move it or delete it.

Why not get a slim and do a data transfer whilst its still alive?2011-08-24 11:33:00

^ Because slims suck.

If you feel comfortable with it, after you back-up your data you should reapply new thermal paste. That should extend it's life another 3+ years.

We would, but neither of us have a job or anything, so it's our dad that's gotta buy us a new one.

I guess I may as well try... The warranty's been gone for like, 3 years and if it completely breaks in the process, that's what I was expecting from YLOD anyway.

If I deactivate my PSN from my PS3 before I try, will I be able to reactivate it if it works without a hassle? I wouldn't wanna have to redownload stuff again, but I wanna stay far away from the 5 PS3 limit, since it's activated on a few friends' PS3s. (I used to play CoD over at friends' houses and stuff)

Yes, but I might want a slim because it has a way bigger hard drive! I can only fit 5 of my good games on my 40 GB

You should be able to reactivate you PSN without a hitch.

You can also install a larger HDD in your phat PS3 after you replace the thermal paste. Then restore your backup.

If its the fan and disk-skips, trust me when I say it doesn't have to do with the thermal paste... no, this is a Disk-drive based problem, Since my old 80-gigger acted the same way on the weeks leading to its demise. It still turns on and runs, but the disk-drive no longer works.

I'd tell them to get a New slim, and just replace the HDD with a 500-gigger, that way they have tons of space.

First, if your PS3 is getting YLOD, eject your disk and only play HDD games. It'll save you a lot of worring. Second, if it does get it, from what you make it sound like it will, send it in to a place called Gophermods. They were quite good and fast and got me my game back. It was a bit on the expensive side though to fix it.2011-08-25 02:23:00

Doesn't necessarily mean it's the Blu-Ray drive. My drive failed too in my launch. It could be that your Blu-Ray laser is dirty, but that wouldn't cause the skipping. Additionally the fan wouldn't be acting up if it was the disk drive, these are in no way related.

If these were both occurring simultaneously, it is most likely due to the system overheating. YLOD is not limited to just the CPU failing. Solder can melt in any part of the system that achieves high enough temperatures, namely, the PSU. Your system may be receiving insufficient power due the PSU being on it's last leg. As for the drive, it could be going faulty as well as a YLOD in your future.
